“Having never taken a dime from corporate PACs, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed is someone we can trust to have our backs,” the union continued. “From Medicare for All to banning stock buybacks, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed is ready, eager, and well-equipped to move our core issues in the US Senate.”

But the endorsement of the storied UAW, which boasts over 350,000 active and retired members in Michigan, might be his biggest yet as he seeks to transition fully from insurgent to frontrunner.

“I am so honored and humbled,” El-Sayed said on social media as he prepared to join striking UAW Local 2093 American Axle workers on the picket line in Three Rivers on Friday. “Michigan union autoworkers built the American middle class and proved that when people stand together, there’s nothing we can’t accomplish. Solidarity forever.”

In recent days, Cuban civil society organizations have denounced the devastating impact of the U.S. government’s economic war on the Cuban people.

Dr. Dayana Couto Núñez, president of the Cuban Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics, says shortages of medicines, medical supplies, technology and fuel are affecting surgeries, ultrasounds, diagnostic tests and maternal care.

According to Couto, the situation is making it harder to detect congenital malformations early and to care for premature and low-birth-weight babies, who often require specialized medication and high-tech neonatal equipment.

“Neither our women nor our children are to blame,” she said. “They need medical care, medicines and quality resources.”

[a video about Cuba from the news collective Belly Of The Beast]

Dr. Gloria Caballero Roque grew up in a single room in Old Havana with four siblings, no running water, and a mother who sold things on the street to feed them. Free education, universal healthcare and also a strong mother who pushed through, she says, are the reasons she made it to university. She went on to earn two PhDs, teach for 35 years and run for political office in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

In this interview she speaks about her childhood, her transition to life in the United States and U.S.–Cuba relations.

She says Cuban-American politicians like Marco Rubio pushing for harder sanctions do not speak on her behalf. Their hostility toward Cuba, she argues, comes from people who can't accept losing control of the island. "They have become monsters against their own people," she says.

Discussing what's happening inside Cuba without discussing the blockade, she says, is treating the symptom while ignoring the disease. "Close the door of this house for 60 years and let's see how you survive."

Green Party leader Zack Polanski and Your Party leader Jeremy Corbyn have joined calls for the British government to investigate British citizens who have served in the Israeli military.

Polanski signed an open letter organised by Declassified UK and the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper urging them to "track the movements of Brits who have served in the IDF" and "subject them to secondary screening where necessary at ports of entry".

The letter called for "robust war crimes investigations in line with domestic and international law".

Pro-Palestinian activists have launched a new campaign at the port of Gioia Tauro in southern Italy aimed at disrupting military supplies involved in the Gaza genocide.

The new action dubbed “Global Intifada Disarm” was launched during a maritime and land demonstration at the port as five boats from the Thousand Madleens to Gaza initiative approached the Calabrian port in a symbolic protest against Italy’s war economy and supply chains.

The 29 May mobilisation, called by grassroots trade unions and the Movement of Young Palestinians in Italy, saw demonstrations across the country, from ports and logistics hubs to factories identified by campaigners as being linked to military production and supply chains connected to Israel.

The forced expulsion of Ain Arab—where Israeli soldiers went door to door, forcing residents from their homes at gunpoint—was a striking example of the Israeli military’s campaign to ethnically cleanse villages across southern Lebanon. Human rights advocates and locals told Drop Site they hadn’t heard of a similar incident occurring in this latest phase of the war—the Israeli military typically bombs and shells areas to forcibly displace residents. Over 1.2 million people have been displaced in Lebanon since March 2, and many have no idea if or when they will be able to return to their homes.

Good catch, thanks. I added the original posting date, which was not in the newsletter itself.

A Palestinian friend who lived in my neighborhood in the US is there now, in his family's home. He said it was like 3 nights in a war zone.

Yes, and it is very positive that prominent human rights groups agree and document it. These reports can be used to pressure governments, universities, etc. to divest from Israel and to stop sending arms, software, etc. to Israel.

Maybe we don't, but there are still many people who aren't convinced yet, and Amnesty International producing a very solid document will likely help convince them.

Aren't the elections over? Whatever "strategic" excuse for supporting Biden/Harris is gone now. It's a bi-partisan policy of unconditional support for Israel.

It's true Trump will be more extreme, but there is no longer any excuse for going easy on Biden/Harris, if there ever was.

This article cites another article from The Forward, a mainstream US Jewish publication that had information that countered the Israeli government narrative.

Hey Jordan, sorry for the delay, but I just saw your comment. I just checked NSFW so we should be good now. Thanks for the heads-up. I didn't realize the photo was in NSFW territory but I will keep that in mind in the future. Thanks again.

You mean the reaction (downvotes) in the .world instances, right?

I think the contrast reflects the real diversity of opinions, and not lack of stamina. Of course I am disappointed with the downvotes and the hostile comments to anything that might oppose Harris. But the level of discourse in Lemmy is a lot better than Twitter, FB, etc.

So I'm going to keep posting these to as many communities as I can. :-)
