They say it's a picture of atoms, but what are the atoms: the glowing yellow balls or the entire meatball including the darker red? If it's the meatballs, then why do some have apparently two nuclei?

Here's the public press release: https://news.cornell.edu/stories/2021/05/cornell-researchers-see-atoms-record-resolution

Here's the actual scientific article: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abg2533

I'm taking a drawing class, and we learned perspective this week, so I drew this as an exercise.

Eye I painted (lemmy.world)
submitted 7 months ago by BackOnMyBS@lemmy.world to c/watercolor@lemmy.ml

Background: I'm taking my first real art class tomorrow. It's a drawing class at a local art school. I was at my friend's house this evening when he was putting his daughter to sleep, so I got excited and started painting with the watercolor set she left out in the living room. I painted this eye from memory on the spot, so it's truly my first real watercolor piece. I'm really happy with it. 😁

What's the point of all this PRISM surveillance and whatever else the NSA has that we don't know about if they don't catch these guys and stop the threats?

The amount of messed-up that would be in this "prank" would be so...messed up.

  1. The girl seems like she was excited and happy over the proposal, which would later turn out to be disappointment, anger, and sadness when she finds out it was fake.

  2. She would be embarrassed that he doesn't want to marry her but she really wanted to. There's nothing wrong with one partner being ready and the other not, but having that displayed as a mockery is embarrassing.

  3. She didn't recognize that it was his twin brother, which is troubling. Even if she was unaware that he had a twin, I would expect her to pick up on some flags that it wasn't her partner: 1) different mannerisms, 2) very limited knowledge of shared experiences and her particular tastes, 3) no jointly understood scripts for showing affection, and more.

  4. When she is legitimately proposed to, she will have at least some considerable doubt that it's real and prevent her from engaging safely and freely, thus damaging the real proposal.

  5. She will now have to decide if she's okay with marrying into a family that pulls "pranks" like that. Also, considering that her partner's brother was fine with doing that, she may wonder if she is missing some serious flags with her partner.

Note: Please excuse me if I'm being too judgemental, picky, or similar. I found my cat of 3 years dead today, so I'm definitely more vulnerable and emotional.

Wait a minute. I'm taking this four steps further for the benefit of all of humanity. Here we go.

One, we need to convert over to 24-hour time. No more of this ridiculous AM/PM confusing crap that makes calculating times confusing. What time is it? It's 9. AM or PM? None of that. It's 9. What time is it 8 hours after 9? It's 9+8= 17. It's 17. Not 5p. What the hell. Why did anyone even ever agree to this AM/PM garbage?

Two, we need to end time zones. They are ridiculous. What's the point?? We could all work on GMT. Imagine, the entire world on one date. A whole worldwide party to celebrate the new year at the same time. International flight scheduling would be soooo intuitive. Your flight time is the arrival time minus the departure time without having to pull out a timezone map and consider daylights-savings to calculate it. What time is it on the International Space Station? The exact same time it is for the rest of humanity. Oh, but then half the world will be awake at night. Nope! They would just adjust their working/wake hours. Instead of the Eastern USA being open from 0900-1700, they would be open from 0400-1300. BTW, calculating that time difference was easy since it was on 24-hour time.

Three, we need to change over to the Julian calendar. What the hell are months even?? They don't serve any purpose other than to sell calendars, maintain the legacy of ancient emperors that dissolved democracies, and gaslight us by telling us that Sept, Oct, Nov, and Dec mean 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th. Get out of here with that crap. We're not buying it. Also, you know who else doesn't use 12-hour time and months?? The US military. They use GMT and Julian calendars for operational matters. Why? Because it makes sense for a global system to use the same thing everywhere!!

Fourth and lastly, we need to switch the year count to the Human Era. Stop with this whole year based on Jesus' supposed birth or death**. Do we even know if it's based on his birth or death? It doesn't matter. Oh, but historians use Before Common Era and Common Era. Okay...and who's life happens to line up perfectly with the split? That's like saying that the American Civil Rights movement ended racism in the country, yet there's still racial segregation and oppression. This is ridiculous. Civilization is letting the life of one person decide when it started?! What about everyone that lived before Jesus? Abroham? Cleopatra? Mark Antony (the full Roman, not the Romantic Puerto Rican)? the Buddha Llama? Sohcrateez? Confusion? Ea-nāṣir?! The correct year is when human civilization started. We are currently in the year 12,023 of the Human Era.

That's it! We've had enough of this oppression propagated by Big Time, including Rolex, Casio, Fossil, and grandfather. This movement starts right here👇, right now👇! One☝🏿humanity. One☝🏾period in the day inconsiderate of the meridian. One☝🏽variable for the date in a year. One☝🏼love. One☝🏻time.

Edit: Right now at the time of this edit, it is 5:00 pm on October 25, 2023 EST (daylights savings time), or better yet, 12023-298-2100 (year-date-time). 31 characters (excluding that it's daylights savings time!) vs. 14. Look at how simple 😮

We are all one system of humanity functioning on the same time, regardless of what anyone says. Right now is right now, no matter what we call it. It's time we all progress to a better future at/on the same time.

The code states that “male students’ hair will not extend, at any time, below the eyebrows or below the ear lobes,” CNN previously reported.

Why do male and female students have different dress codes? WTF does the school system care if boys have longer hair? Apart from safety issues like being in a workshop class, why does anyone in the school system think they have the right to control who can and can't have certain hair lengths?

Yo, is anyone else getting really sick of this overreach of power and authority? I'm not referring to the economic and political relations. Those aside, I'm talking about this crap where people are starting to get involved in personal matters of appearance, medicine, gender, and even straight bs crap like a high school band finishing a song. This is getting way out of hand. Our culture is rotting with power and control issues at the expense of individual liberties.

Private mental health providers in the US are pretty unsupervised and have a conflict of interest in that they make more money by keeping their patients/clients unwell, which can lead to negligence and abuse. The only thing keeping in line is the possibility of someone informed and insightful enough to report them to the licensing board or pressing a lawsuit.

For example, if a provider has poor integrity, it is in their best interest to not treat depression, but rather help the patient/client feel good for the moment. What the patient/client experiences is that they feel better when they see their provider, so they become dependent on their provider. This ensures the provider a reliable source of revenue.

Another issue is that masters level therapists, while capable of providing treatment for simple cases such as a clear depressive episode, are not properly trained to conduct thorough assessments for complex cases, meaning they can misdiagnose quite easily. Complex cases would be better treated by a well-trained psychologist that can conduct thorough psychometric assessments that are quite sophisticated and take lots of time to analyze. These services are costly and the vast majority of insurance policies won't cover them.

Relevantly, yet another issue is insurance for mental health. Most insurance policies that pay for mental health services pay low, so the care you receive can be substandard since the more effective providers are charging what they're worth in a market economy. One example that comes to mind is Better Help. They pay providers insultingly low, like around $30/hour, while effective providers are charging ~$150/hr out-of-pocket. That means that when someone uses Better Help to obtain care, they're getting the bottom of the barrel therapist.

Lastly, the majority of family and marriage therapists aren't properly trained in narcissistic emotional abuse. This can mean that therapy would not only be a waste of time, but can make things much worse as they can help the narcissist abuse the victim even further. Narcissistic abuse is quite complicated and requires a relationship therapist that specializes in that to properly assess and help the victim escape.

Tips: If you have been seeing a therapist for 12 sessions, and you haven't realized any considerable long-term changes, find another therapist. Also, if your therapist doesn't call you out on your bullshit, let's you ramble about tangential matters, or focuses on helping you overcome specific weekly struggles, rather than helping you develop skills and restructure deep cognitive matters to address them yourself, find another therapist. An effective therapist would develop a clear treatment plan with you that aims to meet objectively measurable goals within a certain time frame.

Note: I am not a therapist. I have just worked in the mental health field and have friends that are therapists.

I still don't understand what business the government has defining sex. How is that in any way the government's job?? If anything, it could be up to medical organizations, such as the AMA, if they had sound arguments. But, the government? I really try to at least understand everyone's logic even if I don't agree with them, but this is just so insane. I don't get it.

Taking advantage of people in weaker positions of power, from being rude to a waiter to abusing a disabled person. They all make me dislike the person immediately and will likely cut them out of my life as soon as possible.
