WASHINGTON (AP) — The judge overseeing Donald Trump’s 2020 election interference case made public Friday a heavily redacted trove of documents that provide a small glimpse into the evidence prosecutors will present if the case ever goes to trial.

The nearly 1,900 pages of documents collected by special counsel Jack Smith’s team were initially filed under seal to help U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan decide what allegations can proceed to trial following the Supreme Court opinion in July that conferred broad immunity on former presidents for official acts they take in office.

That's gonna be some serious reading over the weekend.

The Biden administration on Wednesday plans to accuse Russia of a sustained effort to influence the 2024 US elections by using Kremlin-run media and other online platforms to target US voters with disinformation, six sources familiar with the matter told CNN.

It’s expected the US will make a series of moves on Wednesday aimed at addressing the Kremlin’s efforts including the White House publicly condemning the actions and the Justice Department announcing law enforcement action targeting the covert Russian campaign, the sources said.

Suggesting that a war should be waged against the democratically-elected government of the United States seems... Well, it seems kinda treason-y to me. Just a smidge.

I'm linking this here because people who are spamming articles about "OMG Biden has Parkinson's disease!!!1!11" need to see this.

The New York Times did not do their homework. At all. Biden probably met with a Parkinson's doctor because he was working on a bipartisan Parkinson's research and treatment bill which he just signed into law.

It's not a flashy, attention-grabbing bill. He's been working on it quietly. But still... The rampant speculation, when he's absolutely not showing the slightest signs of beginning Parkinson's - let alone the advanced stages that would start to affect his mind - is disgusting.

Parkinson's causes extremely well-known symptoms, tremors most notably. Parkinson's dementia sometimes arises in advanced stages, long after tremors would have been constantly visible.

The chances he has Parkinson's are incredibly slim.

Hey, uhh, Europe? Can we talk?

Look, I know the way the left has been handling immigration has you upset, but could you please take a closer look at the absolute freaks you're electing today?

I mean, just take a good look at the United States, circa 2017 through 2020. Did we look like electing an absolute freak worked out for us? Did it fix our own immigration problems? Did it make electing your own Donald Trumps look like a good idea?

[META] Help! (lemmy.world)

Hi everyone,

News is weird. When it's weird enough, it reads like articles from The Onion, and that's what we're all about. But as the community grows, there's more and more content being posted here that just isn't very Onion-y.

Jimmy Carter Becomes Second President Convicted Of Felony For Sticking Up Waffle House

Take a look at that headline from The Onion today. Or this one:

World Series Of Poker Entrants Play One Hand Face-Up So Everyone Can Learn Rules

Or this one:

New Hormone-Free IUD Wards Off Sperm With Steady Emission Of Police-Grade Pepper Spray

That's the flavor we're going for. We want real, credible news articles with headlines that read like they're from The Onion.

This is not the community for:

  • Non-Onion-y political news (it's gotta be absurd enough to look Onion-y)
  • Non-Onion-y regular news (it's gotta be absurd enough to look Onion-y)
  • Satire (it's gotta be actual news)
  • Fake news from fly-by-night "news" sites (again, it's gotta be actual news)

That means not every ridiculous thing a politician does qualifies as appropriate content here.

I need your help, though... I need people to report content that just isn't Onion-y, and I need people to try not to post non-Onion-y content in the first place.

Finally, I need help moderating, so this is also a formal call for new mods! Post below if you think you're ready to take on moderation for one of the larger Lemmy communities! Tell me why you'd like to mod, and link to a news story from any time (it doesn't have to be current) that has a properly Onion-y headline, to show that you really get this community.

I'll pick two people to become new moderators for the community from participants. Good luck!

Some context:

Former Trump White House Communications Director Michael Dubke suggested on CNN Tuesday that Trump had mobilized his allies and proxies to the courthouse in an effort to “get around the gag order” imposed on him by Judge Merchan.

Yep. He's trying to violate the gag order indirectly. Unfortunately for him, the gag order specifically includes attempting to have surrogates violate the order on his behalf.

I suspect there's another gag order hearing incoming.

My son is trans. Please vote for Joe Biden so he can have the protections he needs and I don't have to stay up at night worrying about him.

This is what a DOJ that hasn't been twisted by political bias looks like. It doesn't matter that Cuellar is a Democrat. If he did the crime (and he's innocent until proven guilty), he should do the time.

Republicans: Take note.

Well, of course. I mean it's not like you paid for a Microsoft Windows license when you bought your computer, so obviously they have to advertise to financially support it. If you're getting something for free, you're the product.

...

...

...

Wait, I'm being told that when people buy computers with Windows installed, they are, in fact, paying for a Windows license, too.

So this is actually Microsoft trying to turn products they've already sold into continuous revenue streams at the cost of usability and customer happiness.

In other news, apropos of nothing in particular, Steam on Linux is working really well these days, with lots of AAA titles running just fine via Proton. Make of that what you will...

This particular homeowner is baffled that anyone would buy a washing machine that needs an internet connection. I'm all for smart appliances, but a smart washing machine is a solution in search of a problem.

I am so fucking sick of these bigots pretending the science of "biological sex" is on their side.

In recent years, multiple studies of the brains of trans people have revealed areas of differentiation from those of cisgender people. And unless these bigots are prepared to argue that brains are not part of biology, they only have two choices: Deny the science somehow or accept that they're just bigots who want to hate, regardless of the science.

And because unlike bigots, I like to back my shit up:

On top of that, there's some indications of oligogenic causes resulting in various allele differences that wouldn't necessarily show up on a brain scan.

In conclusion: Fuck bigots and their attempts to co-opt science in order to support their bigotry.

Miscarriage of justice. Hopefully the DA is ready with an immediate appeal.

Any Trump supporters out there, I want you to think about something.

One of the reasons you originally supported Trump is that he was supposedly rich enough to fund his own campaign. Then you sent him - supposedly a man worth $10 billion at one point - piles of money. He begged you for it over and over. He needed your help to fight the system, to "stop the steal," to "make America great again," and you gladly opened your wallets without ever wondering why a billionaire needed your money and couldn't fund his campaigns on his own.

That billionaire now has a GoFundMe. Roll that around in your head. He has a GoFundMe because he can't (or won't) spend his own earned income as a billionaire real-estate tycoon to settle judgments against him that - by his own claims - amount to roughly 1/20th his net worth.

Why? Try to explain why in a way that doesn't make you sound like the world's biggest sucker and the victim of a con artist.

Great. So once Stack Overflow is dead, where will ChatGPT get actual, correct answers from?

[-] kescusay@lemmy.world 239 points 1 year ago

I will never understand why that's so difficult for some people. Calling on Israel to stop the illegal "settlements" in no way indicates support for Hamas.

To be 100% clear, the horrific murders and mutilations they've committed are inexusable and Hamas should be utterly dismantled, with every surviving member put on trial for war crimes. That can be true at the same time as it's true that Israel's illegal annexation of territory and treatment of Palestinians is wrong.

Please, can someone tell me they understand that? Am I taking crazy pills, here?

[-] kescusay@lemmy.world 252 points 1 year ago

This is awful, and there are no good sides to it. Hamas are terrorists, and the Israeli government's actions have made this kind of thing inevitable.

A lot of innocent people on both sides will die, nothing will get resolved, and both sides will continue to do horrible things to each other.

This sucks.

The really shocking thing here is that 31% of Republicans are still aware of reality enough to understand that Biden won legitimately.
