I made a blog post discussing my biggest issues with Lemmy and why I am kind of done with it as a software.

For context, there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes when it comes to lemmy admin stuff especially in the matrix channels. There is a significant frustration and lack of confidence in the lemmy developers at this point. Even those who try to contribute to the project get eventually feeling pushed out.

Welcome to the hell of being a lemmy admin. There's a reason why lemmy admins are fed up with the developers.

And of course if you have a local public library system, get a library card and support them. This goes beyond just going to the library as well, go to budget meetings and council meetings if you can. Stay vigilant to local ongoing funding plans within your city and county, and show up to defend libraries to make it clear you aren't there to fuck around.

As well, if you are a parent go to your local school board meetings and stop fascists from taking your board over. Get involved in your childs PTA, do activism work, and push back against Moms for Liberty. If you have the time, your kids public school needs you to show up and support them.

And obviously, keep reading. Thanks for the awesome comments and discussions this past week.

I'm considering more book highlights in this community too beyond banned books week, especially on the more obscure banned/challenged books. Would there be any interest in that at all?

Kicking off this week with a bang of a nobel prize winning author, and for good reason. This book was deeply disturbing to read but extremely important. It was such a beautifully upsetting piece of literature. The book was intense, yes, but it felt like I was reading thru a beautifully crafted painting.

Big warning though for child sexual abuse in this story, if you picked it up and have not read it yet.

Of course, this book is very contentious. Not only is it written by a black woman talking about race, but has the above content as well.

Have you read it? Any thoughts or feelings?

Here's the Wikipedia page regarding it's censorship and bans in the US: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bluest_Eye

This award winning book is about a young Nepalese girl who is sold into sexual slavery in India. I've read it, and it was extremely touching and horrifying. It was incredibly necessary to provide a glimpse into a world that many kids suffer thru every day around the world.

Of course, the book has been banned or challenged 24 times this year in the US.

Have you read this book? There was also a movie made about it as well.

Wow. He straight up just admitted he's a Nazi. Absolutely fucking vile.

[-] gabe@literature.cafe 149 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Wow! Who knew when you kick your volunteer mods who curate content for you for free to the curb that overall quality would decrease?

OK, I am going to take a minute away from the shit stirring and potentially provide some insight speaking as an admin who's had the misfortune of dealing with this so I can maybe shift this comment section into an actually meaningful discussion.

You can have your own opinion and feelings against lemmy.world but, this?

The only thing that could have prevented this is better moderation tools. And while a lot of the instance admins have been asking for this, it doesn’t seem to be on the developers roadmap for the time being. There are just two full-time developers on this project and they seem to have other priorities. No offense to them but it doesn’t inspire much faith for the future of Lemmy.

This is correct. Most lemmy admins likely agree as well, I don't speak for anyone but myself but I can say that I think it would be hard to find someone who disagreed. What happened today is a result of a catastrophic failure on lemmys end, with issues that should have been addressed over a month ago just being completely ignored. The lemmy devs shared a roadmap during their AMA & they essentially were more concerned with making shit go faster... that's about it.

You are correct, there is safe harbor provisions on the matter. There is a legal responsibility to report and store the content securely when it is reported as an admin.

It’ll also wreck your credit, and if you’re unlucky they’ll sell your debt off to debt collectors to harass you and your family. Even if they’ve died. And then the truly desperate will sometimes commit heath insurance fraud making the system even more immensely fucked for everyone except for the hospitals and insurance companies

Lemmy.world admins, I am truly asking you to please reflect on how bad this looks. It honestly makes you seem like you can't handle criticism and if people get that vibe they will use it to absolutely fuck with you. I know from my own personal experience. I understand that you're volunteers but this is a step in a very bad direction that will only serve to cause more issues.

[-] gabe@literature.cafe 111 points 1 year ago

The "ight I'm out" ban note was.... hm. Not a great look. Comes across as petty and vindictive.

[-] gabe@literature.cafe 353 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Please make announcements on lemmy instead of exclusively on discord moving forward. That is the biggest issue here, the lack of public transparency. Such a decision affects all instances, not just lemmy.world and making it publicly known is important

Damn the fediverse is really having it's moment. I guess even non-techie people really are truly getting fed up with corporate social media.
