Some installers write to the protected "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" folders. These are special folders requiring elevated permissions. (This is why a lot of modern programs install to your user folder or AppData instead).

Unfortunately, these same permissions also allow writing to OS files. It's good to be wary. You may be interested in a Sandbox program (I use Sandboxie). Someone else here can tell me if this is unnecessary or not useful in general.

Are all dinosaur fossils 'replicas'? (www.indianadinosaurmuseum.org)
submitted 2 weeks ago* (last edited 1 week ago) by DemBoSain@midwest.social to c/nostupidquestions@lemmy.world

I went to a small 'dinosaur museum' last summer in South Bend Indiana. I wasn't expecting much, but found myself disappointed that all the large displays (except one) were 'replicas'. I'm not sure why I felt this way, since all fossils are 'copies'. But 'replica' makes it seem fake.

edit: I think this is being misinterpreted. In my mind, all fossils are 'copies' of the original. The bone is gone, replaced by stone. But for some reason, calling something a replica doesn't carry the same...majesty as the original copy. Maybe it's just the thought that it could have been tampered with when making it out of plastic or fiberglass.

Scott Adams never does anything wrong. Bad things just seem to happen to him.

A bill before Congress that classifies flag-burning as an incendiary device.

I expect this to have broad bipartisan support and to pass with little opposition.

The bill itself is unsurprising and uninteresting. What is interesting is the title and description written by the bill's sponsors (Claudia Tenney R-NY, Dan Crenshaw R-TX).

"To deny tax deductions and other Federal funding..."

These congressmen think tax deductions are Federal funding. If they did not think this way, they would have left out the word other in their description.

Why would a judge allow this? It's like showing the jury a made-for-TV movie based on the trial they're hearing.

...the killing should nevertheless open a debate....

No, not debating anymore. There should be no profit in healthcare. No shareholders. All the money I spend on premiums and copays had better go towards paying someone's medical bills. If someone is making billions of dollars by making someone else's life miserable, I won't mourn when those enablers are removed from the table.

NHTSA recently published a proposed rule taking on pedestrian safety, specifically calling out this problem. Expect it to be killed early next year.

I once walked down to the local ice cream dispensary to get a cone of some type. But they were short-handed that day, and had closed the walk-up window. So I walked over to the drive-thru window.

They would not serve me without a car. Instead of closing the drive-thru and making drivers get out of their car, they closed the walk-up window, and wouldn't serve any walk-ups at the drive-thru.

Fuck drive-thrus.

Scott Adams is my favorite self-destructive asshole. The massive ego goes perfectly with his complete lack of self awareness. He's a total expert in every field, but all science is fake.

He 100% believes that the 2020 election was stolen, and elections are, by design, incapable of being secure. When a (republican) election expert tried explaining how our elections are actually very secure, and there's extremely few instances of fraud, Scott's response was "I'm not reading all that."

He's also a trained hypnotist. I'm not sure what that means, it probably has something to do with clown school. Except all education is fake too.

Just like the '70s, Detroit wants to build enormous energy-dense cars, while automakers from another Asian country come in and sell what the market demands.

Expect US automakers to blame unions when they face another round of bankruptcies and begin demanding government bailouts.
