Copied from another reply:

Schizophrenia is a mental health disorder that can be triggered by psychoactive substances, trauma, or other significant events/life changes. Not everyone who has schizophrenia was guaranteed to get it, it’s just that some people have the potential for it. A psychotic episode (whether substance-induced or organic) is a common trigger to cause schizophrenia in someone that had the potential to develop the disorder.

If you have a family history of mental illnesses (particularly Schizophrenia and Bipolar disorder), significant THC use and substance-induced psychotic episodes can be the grain that tips the scale towards developing the disorder that may have otherwise been avoided.

(TL;DR: if Schizophrenia runs in your family, be exceedingly careful about what psychoactive substances you use.)

I'm a medical student and I have some direct experience with this. Sometimes, the difference between the surgeon who will do the procedure versus the surgeon that won't do the procedure is the availability of specialized facilities and equipment that they have access to. An elective surgery (i.e. not an emergency surgery) can go from routine to very high risk depending on the amount of adipose tissue the patient has.

And it's not just a matter of the fat tissue overlying the surgical site. Morbidly obese patients are much more likely to have things like sleep apnea which can make anesthesia more risky and might require more specialized equipment than a particular surgeon/hospital/anesthesiologist might have access to. The "morbid" part of "morbid obesity" also refers to the fact that people above a certain threshold of weight are much more likely to have other health conditions like heart disease that make anesthesia more risky.

I'm a 3rd year medical student and I've already been caught off-guard a few times by the WILD medical misinformation my patients talk about, and figured that I should probably get ahead of it so that I can have some kind of response prepared. (Or know what the hell they've OD'd on or taken that is interfering with their actual medications)

I'm setting up a dummy tablet with a new account that isn't tied to me in any reasonable way to collect medical misinformation from. I'm looking at adding tik tok, instagram, twitter, reddit, and facebook accounts to train the algorithms to show medical misinformation. Are there any other social media apps or websites I should add to scrape for medical misinformation?

Also, any pointers on which accounts to look for on those apps to get started? I have an instagram account for my artwork and one for sharing accurate medical information, but I've trained my personal algorithm to not show me all the complete bullshit for the sake of my blood pressure. (And I have never used tik tok before, so I have no goddamn clue how that app works)

I wrote an essay (with sources! and data!) about what cutting Medicaid actually means because people don't have good perspective on it.

I really have no idea what we can do as medical professionals to protect our pregnant patients. I try not to be pessimistic, but if H5N1 becomes another pandemic, I'm not very confident that Trump or those of his ilk in other countries are going to do anything useful about it.

This is a very small case series, but there aren't that many cases to study (yet). I still find it to be very concerning, even if it is a very small sample size.

Summary

ProPublica investigates health insurers’ reliance on controversial doctors to deny mental health treatment.

Highlighting Emily Dwyer’s case, it details United Healthcare’s rejection of coverage for her anorexia treatment, despite evidence she was gravely ill.

Courts have criticized insurers for “arbitrary and capricious” denials, with judges pointing to factual errors and dismissive reviews by company-hired psychiatrists.

While some families, like the Dwyers, fought back in court, most lack resources to challenge insurers.

Critics call for reforms as denials often worsen health outcomes and highlight systemic issues in mental health care access.

Folk music/bluegrass has a long history of producing very poignant protest music, and this song/artist is no exception. The song does a good job of conveying a quick summary of where we are and how we got here (and it's a delightfully catchy tune!)

This might be a good thing to share with folks who aren't quite getting the message as it's a pleasant way to share the information and is less than 2 minutes long.

This is a great article written by Robert Evans of 'Behind the Bastards' fame that goes into Luigi's background, social media presence, and apparent ideologies.

We all have had patients with chronic pain, we all know someone with chronic pain, and some of us unfortunately have chronic pain. We know how horrible it can make someone's life, and how much worse life can be if your insurance just keeps denying anything that could help.

Edit: Here's a link to what is most likely the real manifesto: https://www.kenklippenstein.com/p/luigis-manifesto

Ken Klippenstein is a very reliable journalist and this version of the manifesto contains the snippets that have been released by law enforcement. Also, considering the thing was hand-written, that very long version involving his mom is dubious. (And there’s not any good evidence that his mom is in anything besides decent/good health)

Tell me you haven't reviewed classmates' papers without telling me you haven't reviewed classmates' papers.

Some of the papers I've read from my classmates make me wonder how they got out of high school, let alone into university or (!!) medical school. There are a lot of people who cannot write decently to save their lives that are still somehow in academia.

The medical symbol of the staff with the snake is only supposed to have 1 (one) snake on it. A staff with 1 snake is the Rod of Asclepius (the son of Apollo and Greek demigod of medicine), a staff with 2 snakes is a Caduceus which is carried by Hermes as a messenger or herald.

Physicians get 1 snake. Couriers and heralds get 2 snakes. Any medical professional or organization that uses 2 snakes is wrong and needs to go study the humanities and classics for a bit.

I accidentally ended up at a religious university for medical school and you better believe I've gotten in numerous fights with the law and ethics professor (who, to be fair, is actually a MD/JD) regarding the prescribed conservative religious approach to the ethics discussions. I absolutely did not change his mind, but I did get a bunch of my classmates to start asking questions by putting myself out there and challenging the professor on their BS.

Edit: I should clarify that these fights were on mic in the recorded lectures, so there's a hard record of my arguing with him.

Pray tell...what are these "normal" things you think suburban women worry about? I suppose it is abnormal on a global scale for them (us) to have to worry about it because it's a non-issue in actually civilized countries.

"Ope" is a common exclamation in Minnesota as an expression of a very Midwestern accent. The meme example is "Ope, lemme sneak right past ya there and grab the ranch".

This is why I'm sad to be losing him in Minnesota, but he's going to be good for the country as a whole.

Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has picked Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to be her running mate, wagering that a former red-district congressman with a progressive streak can help her win over working-class voters in battleground states needed to beat Donald Trump in November.

“The entire country is about to see why their friends from Minnesota can’t stop bragging about Governor Walz,” Minnesota DFL Party Chair Ken Martin said in a statement. “By picking a servant leader born and raised in a small town who has dedicated his career to protecting freedoms and lifting up working families, Vice President Harris has chosen the perfect foil for [Trump running mate] JD Vance and his politics of resentment.”

As a Minnesotan, I'm disappointed to be losing our governor. He's done great things for our state, but I'm hopeful that the Lt. Governor who will be taking his place will be a good replacement.

Walz’s ascension to the ticket leaves questions for Minnesota. Under the state Constitution, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan would become governor if Walz resigns, but he’s not on the ballot in Minnesota this fall, meaning he could wait until after the November election to step down. Flanagan, a member of the White Earth Nation, would become Minnesota’s first woman and first Native American governor.

I want them to seize the Trump tower and turn it into low-income housing and a job training/community college with whatever liquid assets they do squeeze out of him. Use the disgorgement to help the people of New York have better lives.
