"AI" has existed since the 70s in terms of computing. In terms of the theory, much further back.

The longer you are on lemmy, the more you can step back and see the ebb and flow of manipulative posts in and out of circulation to create rifts between people and create short-lived topics of ‘conversation’ to busy the people here. The general anti-capitalism direction is pandered to singing the tune people think they want to hear and is no different I’m sure to the many bot posts aimed at facebook users to play the tune they also want to hear to manipulate, and get them to come back.

I’m sure facebook, twitter, and the other shitty social sites are far worse but for over a decade, a deep level of warfare has been fought online via manipulation and disinformation and young people are far too easily manipulated by a post because well, obviously a real person wrote it, right? Right? There’s even a picture of their face and everything!

So, I’d like to ask lemmy users to be particularly on guard, both here and any other site they visit with ‘user’ postings on in the future, and to perhaps step back, stop visiting sites, posts, forums, etc outside of your hobbies, and ignore it all. That’s the only way to be immune to the noise and to lead a better life. Whatever that direction is for you. Also, help your friends ignore the noise and help them focus on visiting information about just their hobbies.

Early internet was just information about hobbies and for the betterment of people and furthering knowledge. Let’s take that back.

I wonder how many people around the world are laughing at USA right now.

Stop calling everyone a “skeptic” and call them what they are: ~~deniers~~ idiots.

FTFY!

Mr Blobby wouldn't take any shit.

Did you know Noel Edmonds believe(d?) that cancer can be cured by positive thoughts?

I remember a time when visiting a website that opens a javacript dialog box asking for your name so the message "hi " could be displayed was baulked at.

Why does signal want a phone number to register? Is there a better alternative?

Presumably Trump is attacking projects that enhance privacy along with other open source projects. How does this realistically affect the future and security of open source projects?

Esterline make specialised keyboards that are specifically for sterile environments which have this feature. You press a button, the keys are ignored and you can wipe the keyboard down.

If this were the 90s, this would be a print advert for the SEGA genesis console / games

I remember some time ago installing an app that allowed me to film in the background whilst having another app open on top. I believe this was from f-droid. I actually have a legitimate use for this.

Could someone please suggest its name if they know, either from f-droid or a decent (trustworthy) app from the play store please.

So Ayumu is a chimp, child of Ai and they participate in the Ai project. There are several mother / child pairs that have been studied for short-term memory ability.

https://youtu.be/JkNV0rSndJ0

I'm sure lots have already seen the video of ayumu being presented with numbers in random places around a screen and then being able to press where the numbers were in sequence at blazing speeds and did it better than the mother.

But Ayumu also did it better than all the other chimps and when compared to humans, humans did the task better to the chimps, but Ayumu's speed is outstanding and they don't know why.

So, here's a hot take, could Ayumu just be autistic, and excel at such tasks?

I'm in the UK and looking to switch over to a UK host provider. Can anyone recommend IONOS for the uk? I'm considering a fairly low-spec VPS. Even with VAT, their prices will be about 3/4 of what I'm currently paying.

I mean, Trump is pissing off a lot of wealthy people, and people have strangely died for less, right? I also wonder what happened to all those video tapes seized at Epstein's island when the FBI raided it after his death, now that the FBI is being pissed off by him too.

Even after the end of his tenure, there won't be heaps of security around him any more so where will he hide? Some people have long memories, especially when billions are concerned.

These are strange times we live in.

So I have an aging DellM4800 15.6" laptop. It's actually built to last, upgradeable MXM A GPU, replaceable battery, professional keyboard, good build quality, easy to get to parts, and has a great matt screen. I use it as a portable laptop, rather than a mobile desktop unit.

Still, Somehow the hinge on one side has become warped. I have no clear idea but suspect that from where it used to be on my lap, the rear fans blew its heat onto it. Or maybe it took a knock somewhere. This would be quite a knock.

Anyway, the plastic cracked and broke off due to the warped metal, and the one side feels a bit, loose and wobbly. It opens fine-ish and just makes a clicking sound each time its opened.

Are there usually generic metal hinges for laptop screens or are they unique to each device? I don't particularly want to have to buy a whole new screen or worse, a new case just for hinges for one side. The missing plastic is small and I can deal with it, but would like to get this one side feeling as solid as the rest of the case.

Healthcare normally have tight varying legal requirements that software must adhere to, so I would say there couldn't be a single solution for multiple countries.

I have a community-based website and I'd like to add a text and video-chat feature to it. I'd like it to be text-first and video second, so you don't have to be streaming to be in the room and for the main part, to be text. Everything I find is video-only. I can host the video streaming data myself.

Is there some project that the opensource world is missing that you think it needs?

Lost the house of my dreams today. Before putting an offer down, I call up some conveyancers to get quotes for work done and one of them instead views and puts an offer down.

Super angry. Had been researching it for about three weeks asking questions and wanting a second viewing. The agency didn't even respond to my first email asking questions for about ten days because apparently it was in their spam box.

I kinda want to go to the agency and flip the tables (not literally, I'm a skinny shit) and for this conveyancer to do it is probably a conflict of interest.

So yeah, really annoyed and have been stewing all day. How do you deal with such situations?

Still true today as it was back then.

And for the non-native English speakers

All the people under broken homes Don't wanna fight no more

All the people nursing shattered bones Don't wanna fight no more But there's no profit in peace So we've gotta fight some more

And all these who are in foreign lands Don't wanna fight no more And all those who've lost their feet or hands Don't wanna fight no more But there's no profit in peace boys We gotta fight some more

Hey we don't wanna fight no more Hey, Hey, Hey, We don't wanna fight no more But theres' no profit in peace So we gotta fight some more

And all those just trying to play their part Don't wanna fight no more And all those who own a human heart Don't wanna fight no more But there's no profit in what you want So we must fight some more

And all those who got an axe to grind Don't wanna fight no more And all those who got their burning lives Don't wanna fight no more But there's no profit in ever being right So we must fight some more

Hey we don't wanna fight no more Hey, Hey, Hey, We don't wanna fight no more But theres' no profit in peace So we gotta fight some more

And all the people under broken homes Don't wanna fight no more All the people never going home Don't wanna fight no more But there is profit in the land you own So we must fight some more

And all those who got a tired face Don't wanna fight no more And all those who are lost without a trace Don't wanna fight no more But there is profit in the love of hate So we must fight some more

This problem is not isolated to Japan. Countries all across the world are facing the same issue and have been for a number of years.

Create a shitty, miserable, society with no rights or support, and people do not want to bring children into it.... who'd guess?

The flannel has been wrung dry to the detriment of the working class; there is no where to go, no more water to squeeze from them. This is global society / capitalism falling apart.

Uhm, REST/GraphQL APIs exist for this very purpose and are considerably faster.

Note, the AI still gets stuck in a loop near the end asking for more info, needing an email, then needing a phone number, and the gibber isn't that much faster than spoken word with the huge negative that no nearby human can understand it to check that what it's automating is correct!

[-] 0101100101@programming.dev 9 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

during the long learning curve, one is usually grossly underpaid and sometimes scammed and or cheated.

See, that's the issue on such sites. Posters want a whole (e.g. e-commerce) project done for $100 because, "it won't take long" and then challenge your quotes with "well, I can get someone in bum|f*ck|land to do it for $100...". A game I don't want to play.

And sticking around and building a rep for a year is difficult when such sites have lots of scammers and sock accounts actively challenging you to make you look bad and their other alt accounts look good.
