Mafia Definitive Edition on Steam Deck it works well except you can’t see what button you’re supposed to press.

Once you know the controls you can just enjoy the superb atmosphere and surprizingly great gunfights!

Great guide! Very useful for people discovering a world outside of the GAFAM’s.

I’ve done everything, but leaving Whatsapp is the most difficult one. I use Threema and Signal with my close friends, but I can’t get rid of Whatsapp because of many groups I have to follow but I’m not close enough to people to ask them to switch.

I’d love it if these two chat services proposed a separate app which would be interoperable with Whatsapp.

Yes Meta would still get some of my data, but less than if I had Whatsapp directly.

Also getting Whatsapp business and setting an automatic answer asking people to contact me through mail, sms or other chats is useful.

Leaving youtube is also difficult as Peertube is lacking non tech content like basketball..

I use Infomaniak for my email and cloud storage.

They’re great, but lately their Linux app has had problems.

When I reported it, they were really efficient and friendly.

Also their data centers are heating buildings where I live.

I would always recommand them as they offer really good prices too.

Hi everyone!

I have the opportunity to buy an Alienware x51 R2 from the early 2010’s for around 100$.

It would be used as a first Linux gaming pc for my 8 year old son.

I can’t know the exact specifications as the friend selling it doesn’t know them and uninstalled Windows on it so he can’t check the specs. I only know it has an i7 and was able to run some recent Call of Duty and Flught Simulator games.

I don’t know how much RAM it has (from 2 to 16gb apparently) and I know it has an Nvidia gpu but I don’t know which one. According to a website, it could be between a GTX660 and a GTX970.

What do you think? Should I give it a try or are these components not gonna be great for any Linux gaming for my son (Beam NG, Sonic All Stars Racing, games from the 2010’s, …)?

I also know old Nvdia cards have a bad reputation on Linux.

Thanks for your help

Edit: After some research and thanks to your answers, I won’t make the mistake of buying it

Hi everyone!

I love Gnome and its visual appeal but I hate how some easy tasks are difficult in it.

My email and cloud provider is advising a password change after an attended breach lately.

I've tried changing them in Agenda and Evolution but these are redirecting me to the general Gnome settings and I can't find a way to update the password without deleting and recreating the account.

Does anyone knows how to do this?

Before anyone asks me why I don't just use Thunderbird (which I do), it's because it wouldn't allow me to have my agenda in the Gnome notification place

If I could, I would happily ditch Agenda and Evolution, but it seems I can't if I want these things to be displayed there..

Hi everyone!

I have around 200 DVD (with movies) that I’d want to backup in order to save them from rotting or physical media disappearance.

My most powerful computer with a DVD drive is a 2012 MacBook Pro upgraded to 16gb of Ram with an SSD running Fedora 42.

If possible, I’d want to keep all the bonuses of the movies, but I could also just backup the movies if keeping the whole disc is too difficult.

My goal would be to keep the original quality.

Also 6-7 discs are already skipping scenes even if the disc shows no damage.

I’ve bought some of these discs 20 years ago with my teenager pocket money so I wouldn’t want to lose them.

Thanks for the help.

As I own these discs and nothing would be illegal in my country, I thought it would be better to post here instead of the piracy community.

Edit: I guess I’ll use Make MKV Beta as it seems to work well and VLC can open the MKV files. Thanks for your help!

Hi everyone!

I bought a cheap used gaming mouse for my son (Logitech G502 Hero) as I want him to learn how to use Linux on a really old computer.

This gaming mouse has a scrolling wheel without any resistance. It works fine, but I just wanted to know if it’s a normal behavior before rating the seller.

As you can see, I’m a Linux user, but clearly not a PC gamer yet (Playstation).

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi everyone!

I’m a Playstation gamer looking into moving to Linux gaming as the next Playstation might not be able to play physical games.

Here are my 2 computers:

MacBook Pro 2012 (upgraded) with Fedora 41

Surface Go 1 with Fedora 41

I bought Frostpunk on Steam after checking on Proton DB that it would normally run on the MacBook as I knew the Surface Go would probably be way too weak.

According to Proton DB it’s a Gold game.

In the end, no matter what version of Proton I use, it doesn’t launch on the MacBook. I have a black screen, some icy sounds and then it crashes at best..

I then thought, let’s give it a try on the Surface Go and it launched immediately without any tinkering using Proton experimental.

But, the game crashes when the firat cinematic starts, probably because it’s loading too many assets for the Surface.

If anyone has an idea about what to try too many get it working on the MacBook, I would be thankful.

In the meantime, I would want to know, how do you know if a game is gonna run on your machine?

Hey everyone!

The car community on Lemmy isn’t the most active and I thought it would be nice to list the cars of its members.

Here is my list:

Present: Seat Leon Cupra 300 St 4 drive

Past: Audi S4 B6 Avant manual, Seat Ibiza Cupra

I was really happy with the 4.2 liters V8 in my S4, but the Cupra gives me more performance, more practicality and is cheaper to run. Would have loved a manual version if you could get it with fake AWD.

I plan on keeping the Leon Cupra for another 10 years before switching to an EV Estate if they appear one day.

What’s your list?

Hi everyone!

I'm struggling with two things on my Surface Go 1 with Fedora 41 on it.

  • I'm trying to get rid of the Surface Kernel I once installed. Apparently I should type sudo dnf remove kernel-surface but then the terminal tells me that there is no corresponding package. Still, when I type uname -a I can see that the kernel is 6.12.7-1.surface.fc41.x86_64 #1 SMP PREEMPT. How can I get rid of it as it makes things tricky if I want to deploy my installation on another computer?

  • I'm looking for a PDF viewer which would allow me to go from one PDF file to another without going back to the file explorer. In a way, I'd want it to work a bit like an image viewer where you only have to click on an arrow to go to the next image. Is there such a program?

Thanks for your help!

I’m a separated dad with a demanding job and a fiancé. I only have the kids when I’m not working but I want to be fully available for them.

Recently, I’ve noticed that it would be difficult for me to play more than a story/ambiance game (next one is gonna be either Dead Space Remake or Aliens Dark Descent) and forever playable game (Gran Turismo 7 since its launch).

If I played more games with the time I have, I would forget the story or the controls. I haven’t tried but I’m pretty sure of it.

The problem with such a system is that I’m almost a aralyzed when I have to chose which story/ambiance game I’m gonna play.

So what’s your system and what are your time limitations?

Hi everyone!

I’ve almost entirely degoogled my life, except for Youtube.

Here are my center of interests and some channels I follow:

  • Linux: The Linux Experiment, Tech Hut
  • Basketball: NBA, Andy Hoops, Heat Check, Jonny Arnett, BasketNews
  • Cars: Throttle House, Everyday Driver, Car and Driver
  • Console Gaming: GamingBolt, IGN
  • Tech: Linus Tech Tips, Techquickie

Concerning Linux, it has been easy to find alternatives to YouTube as The Linux Experiment is on PeerTube and I can support him for 1$ a month Through Patreon.

Tech Hut is on Odysee so I could watch his videos here and support him through Buy Me A Coffee or something similar if I wanted to.

I know I could watch everything from the Linus Tech Tips on Floatplane but 5$ a month is a bit too expensive.

Do you have any suggestions about anyone producing similar content to what I’ve described above (Basketball, Console Gaming, Cars and Tech) that I could watch on a YouTube alternative?

I don’t mind paying 1-2$ a month for a channel I enjoy but I can’t pay more for now 😇

Hi everyone,

I run a Surface Go 1 with Fedora Workstation on it and with the Surface Kernel installed in order to improve bluetooth.

Sadly, lately, it ain't improving anything and my Surface Go just seems to have lost its bluetooth connectivity as it only manages to connect to my Sony portable speaker.

My work iPhone and my Microsoft Modern Mobile Mouse aren't detected/can't detect my Surface Go, but I can still send files through LocalSend (I guess it's not using bluetooth).

As I'm getting tired of these problems, if I don't find a quick solution, I'm looking at getting a wired mouse or a bluetooth dongle.

Since I already have my bluetooth mouse, a dongle would be practical but I'd want to be sure that I won't run into bluetooth problems with it anymore.

I don't know if it changes everything, but my Surface Go is almost always linked to an USB-C screen from Philips that I'm using as an USB hub. So the dongle would be on it and I'd use the trackpad when I'm not in front of that screen.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi everyone,

I’ve been a happy user of Fedora Workstation since Fedora 36 on my Surface Go 1.

I really enjoy Gnome and everything is set up the way I want to.

Since I was really happy with my setup I just wanted to be able to replicate it easily through Clonezilla so that I could port it on any future computer I’d get.

Sadly, even with the help of really helpful and knowledgeable users on Lemmy, it hasn’t worked (https://sh.itjust.works/post/25963065).

So now I’m left wondering if there could be a distribution that I’d enjoy and which would be easy to deploy on another computer as I’d hate to have to configure everything on every computer I’d get.

I love Gnome but I wouldn’t be against trying something else if necessary.

What distribution could meet my needs?

Hi everyone,

I have a finely tuned Fedora 40 image that I cloned using Clonezilla (see: https://sh.itjust.works/post/25762756)

I wanted to deploy it on my old Acer Aspire 5737z but it won’t boot. It’s just displaying a — on a black screen for hours.

I’m not so knowledgeable but I guess it means I would have to reinstall the GRUB or whatever.

I’ve booted into my Fedora Live USB and tried the lsblk command people were talking about on the web (I don’t understand the terminal). Here's the result.

I think the SDA disk is the one I would like to boot from.

Can anyone help me understand what I have to do 😇🙏

I’d almost love if games were released and getting no updates after that. But only if the games are released in a complete state.

I hate the fact that you shouldn’t play some games as soon as they are released, because you’d be playing the inferior version.

That needs to change.

I hope everyone keeps putting some pressure on legislators about such things.

We have to remind companies that buying is buying.

I wish there was a petition for my country.

[-] Dariusmiles2123@sh.itjust.works 48 points 2 years ago

Happy to be almost degoogled when I read such things.

If only it was easy to get rid of YouTube..

I love what fairphone and some other companies are doing.

Still some of their earphones got a 1/10 reparability on ifixit, so I’d really check how reparaible these ones are.

[-] Dariusmiles2123@sh.itjust.works 57 points 2 years ago

I’ll probably buy an electric car one day, but I’ll be paying a lot of attention to its repairability. We have to make sure brands understand that « programmed obsolescence » isn’t accepted by everyone!

[-] Dariusmiles2123@sh.itjust.works 111 points 2 years ago

I wasn’t really against Reddit when I left to go on Lemmy. It was mostly to try something which is luving because of its users.

Now I’m glad I did.

[-] Dariusmiles2123@sh.itjust.works 61 points 2 years ago

Well whoever is taking them away should reimburse the clients if they were not made aware that they didn’t own the show but were just renting it.

These behaviors are dangerous and shouldn’t be legal. You press « buy », you own the product, not the right to watch it for a few years.

[-] Dariusmiles2123@sh.itjust.works 64 points 2 years ago

Apple is making really good hardware but we should stop buying it because of what they are doing against repairabality or because of the fact that they trying to capture you in their ecosystem.

[-] Dariusmiles2123@sh.itjust.works 97 points 2 years ago

I ain’t a super Linux user, but I find it crazy that so many governments aren’t scared to put their data in the hands of US corporations like Microsoft of Apple.

I work for the state in Geneva, Switzerland, and my employers gives me an iPhone and forces me to use Windows at work.

I know that developing your own Linux distribution or any other solution is difficult but my country is even using a foreign cloud service instead of a swiss one😨
