You assume privilege. Let me correct you. I work two jobs and put in over 70hrs a week. I’ve been doing that for over 10yrs. That’s not privilege, that’s working my ass off to get ahead. I will admit that I’ve been very lucky in that my line of work was not negatively impacted by Covid. But that’s as far as I will concede.

You’re absolutely right. I totally forgot about Costco only accepting Mastercard and debit.

[-] DeepChill@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

You said it yourself. The Costco card has different reward percentages depending on what you buy and where. The benefit of this new card is the complete lack of categories. It’s just 2% across the board on all purchases at any store. When I shop at Costco I’d effectively be getting 4% cash back. 2% on this credit card and 2% because I have the executive membership.

Who doesn’t spend $500 a month these days? Cellphone, gas & groceries would be that much or more. The fees are waived if you auto deposit your paycheque ($4k/moth or more).

From the FAQ….

How is the Wealthsimple credit card different from the Wealthsimple prepaid Mastercard? The credit card is a way of borrowing money, while the prepaid card is spending your own money that is already in your chequing account. When applying for the credit card, a credit check is required and using the card will affect your credit score — good payment history helps, while missed payments may affect your score negatively.

The cash back rewards are higher on the credit card, and it comes with some additional benefits like insurance and access to the Visa Infinite perks.

One other benefit that never gets mentioned and people don’t realize. Credit cards are safer for you as the consumer when it comes to fraud. If your card is compromised by a shady vendor it’s not your money that gets stolen. It’s the credit card company’s. It’s up to them to get it back. Using a debit card means it’s YOUR money that gets stolen and it’s up to you to fight to get it back. Meanwhile, your car payment or rent might bounce because your chequing account has been emptied.

Here’s what I see using Acrtic for iOS (Blue cake) and Voyager for iOS (multicolour cake)

Hey, thx! Didn’t even notice that until you pointed it out. Two years since the fuck spez “mass exodus” from Reddit.

Looks like a no brainer. If you’re already a Wealthsimple client they ask you for consent to do a soft inquiry on your credit report. I like that a lot more than a hard hit. Especially for something I know without a doubt I’m qualified for. Time to get rid of a card I’ve been meaning to ditch for a while now (no rewards at all).

Well, we do share a land border with Denmark. Sooooo…. we’re practically European already!

The first time I saw this thing it was marketed as something to hold a pair of eye glasses on the front of a shirt if you don’t have a pocket. One half goes on the inside of your shirt and the other goes on the outside. They’re held together, in place, with really strong magnets.

When you are writing the date, the only correct way is ISO8601 (YYYY-MM-DD). If you’re speaking to someone (verbal communication) then do whatever you want.

Just about anything to do with food is because Canadian versions (much like European versions) don’t have as many nasty ingredients. Just look up Canadian vs American Froot Loops as the most visually striking example (food dyes that are ok in USA but illegal in Canada & EU). I’ve heard Oreos taste completely different in The States too.

Just thought of another example… Americans driving south to get Mexican Coke because they were still using sugar cane instead of high fructose corn syrup.

Backpack recommendations? (sh.itjust.works)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by DeepChill@sh.itjust.works to c/edc@sopuli.xyz

I’m looking for recommendations for a backpack that will be used for commuting to work. What I’m looking for would have one large compartment that I could put a shirt and a pair of pants in, a Bluetooth speaker, a large Contigo water bottle and maybe some miscellaneous stuff. I don’t want a hundred pockets and compartments (internal or external). All I seem to be able to find are laptop backpacks or hiking backpacks that are just too “busy” with features that would just get in the way or waste storage space. I really don’t want to have to resort to buying a laptop backpack and then cutting out all the internal compartments with a razor blade. That’s just dumb, and I worry that what’s left after cutting would start to fray and fall apart. Durability and and convenience are top priority but price isn’t a huge issue (within reason).

TIA.

Update 1: Since there have been several positive comments re. JanSport bags… That’s what I’ve decided to try. I pulled the trigger on this bag. It’s a bit fancier (suede parts) than what I was originally planning but it ticks all the boxes. The fact that they have a Canadian store and free shipping is icing on the cake.

Update 2: Bag just arrived today. It’s nice, really nice. I almost feel bad about the abuse it’s going to take. The canvas is quite thick and has a very high quality feel to it. Same for the suede. Doesn’t feel cheap at all. It’s just the right size for my needs. At first glance the external water bottle pocket looked too small to fit any kind of reusable bottles but I tried forcing it a bit and found it has a very strong elastic band that holds the pocket folded against the main body of the bag. We’ll see how long that elastic band holds up. The zippers feel nice but I don’t know what brand they are as they have a stylized “JS” on the zipper pulls. It does have a laptop sleeve that I was kinda hoping to avoid but the way they’ve done it is very nice. It’s a zippered full length pocket not accessible from within the main compartment. It’s kinda hidden between the top mounting points of the shoulder straps and the upper flap that covers the main compartment zipper. Overall I’m very happy with this bag and I think the price is about right for the quality of the materials and construction of the bag.

Thanks everyone for your input.

Feature request (sh.itjust.works)
submitted 2 years ago by DeepChill@sh.itjust.works to c/avelon@lemm.ee

Any chance of Avelon working properly on iPadOS? It seems every other Lemmy app I’m using via TestFlight fills the screen properly on my iPad mini but Avelon doesn’t, it displays an iPhone sized window that you can only zoom in to sorta fit vertically. Having to use two different apps for my iPad and iPhone is the only thing keeping me from switching to Avelon as my primary app. It’s just so much nicer than the rest in every other meaningful way. Thx.
