"This is really going to impact institutions that we take for granted," Internet Archive director of archiving and data services Jefferson Bailey told the Standard, "like our museums, our historical societies, our public libraries, our academic libraries — just a lot of people that keep information free and accessible and online."

They want to remove anything that keeps history accountable. This anti accountability regime don’t want their sins to be remembered. Imagine the linage of these assholes. How they will be looked down upon because their ancestors are are bigots and liars.

[-] Fingolfinz@lemmy.world 46 points 1 year ago

They don’t deserve lineages

[-] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 34 points 1 year ago

It's part of the fascist playbook

[-] Daggity@lemm.ee 21 points 1 year ago

They don’t want their lies to be proven false. Same reason trump regime keeps making private government information that was previously available to the public.

https://archive.org/donate

sucks that the things we need now require regular folks to be their patrons rather than collectively funding them, but here we are…

Your taxes can only go towards kidnappings! /s

[-] ogeist@lemmy.world 25 points 1 year ago

Just donated 50 ♥️

[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 22 points 1 year ago

❤️Donated. Cash is difficult right now, but I had some crusty old crypto sitting around just shrinking every month - they make it very easy to send some crypto their way so I was happy to dump it.

[-] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 21 points 1 year ago

Thanks errer

Disposable income Lemmings, this is the way

❤️ love you Internet Archive

[-] SerotoninSwells@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago

Elon Musk will go to any length to scrub this image from the Internet:

[-] kn0wmad1c@programming.dev 139 points 1 year ago

The government funded them $345,000.

This is 100% spiteful and not an example of "wasteful government spending"

[-] rusticus@lemm.ee 19 points 1 year ago

We can easily crowdfund this. Especially the parts regarding Republican fuckery.

[-] LanguageIsCool@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

America, where the good stuff is funded on the side.

"Those who control the present, control the past and those who control the past control the future."

[-] fossilesque@mander.xyz 11 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

They destroy the past to sell you a future. It's coercion and extortionate.

They are scared because the people don’t want things to go back to the way they were.

The people want them gone.

And it’s 100% justified.

They know they deserve to be handed over to the mob.

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 40 points 1 year ago

Extremists always destroy history so they can write their own.

[-] hedhoncho@lemm.ee 39 points 1 year ago

Ugh some asshole who’s only going to live a century depriving an endless future of historical knowledge. Musk needs to be detained and imprisoned.

Is there a folding@home style of effort I can contribute disk space and bandwidth to?

[-] TheOctonaut@mander.xyz 9 points 1 year ago

The equivalent would be seeding a torrent backup.

[-] obbeel@lemmy.eco.br 25 points 1 year ago

Both the Internet Archive and Wikipedia are really important. I guess the way is to make alternatives or datahoard in these difficult times.

[-] OminousOrange@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 year ago

Downloading and accessing Wikipedia offline through Kiwix is actually pretty easy.

[-] chalupapocalypse@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago

What's the size on this can I download a copy

[-] fossilesque@mander.xyz 28 points 1 year ago

Pedabytes, but you can help in other ways. Donating, uploading and the Archive Warrior. There may be waits to support via torrents too but I do not know.

Modern book burnings create a lot less smoke and noise.

[-] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 18 points 1 year ago

I am not now, nor have I ever been a Christian, but shit like this makes me go Jesus Fucking Christ.

Archive.org is a critical repository of knowledge and archiving the internet. Elon has cut nothing, but damaged a ton. It is kinda incredible how many damage he has done.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. 6. All posts must be news articles.

Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.
