A species of bunny "coming back to life from the extinction list"? This made my day better. :)
Not to be a debbie downer, but it's possible the bunny has been thriving in areas where humans weren't, and their reappearance means that we are either encroaching upon their sanctuary, or we have flushed them out of it by destroying it. 120 years is a long time to be completely hidden from people.
If you read the article, it sounds like the locals knew it was there, they just didn't know it was rare/extinct. Further, the locals, now knowing its rare, have agree to change practices to help preserve it. So still uplifting!
If they have to. For the most part the importance for rabbits is habitat not subsistence hunting. They're quite adept at filling their niche despite predation pressure. They just need the niche.
Yeah, "we will hunt them less" is nothing if they build roads & houses, change/"manage" the forest.
Looks like a rabbit to me, folks
This is perhaps the most powerful bun alert in a century
bunnies
Post bunny pics, post questions about rabbits, almost anything rabbit or hare-related goes (whether wild or domestic).
- "Almost" because this is a community for bunny enjoyers—no images of dead or injured rabbits, please.
- This is a community for the animal! Humans with rabbit features (think "bunny girls", people with a cottontail and bunny ears) are not what this community is for.
- Also, no AI-generated content please.
Other than that, rules should be pretty obvious: be nice, no bigotry/discrimination, stay on topic, etc.
Not officially affiliated with any rabbit subreddits.
House Rabbit Society is overall a fantastic resource on pet rabbits: info on diets, health, vet care, adopting bunnies, and behavior.

As of now, if you follow all 4 bunny communities (the above 3 plus this one), you will see little to no post overlap/crossposting, so you can safely follow all 4 without getting your feed spammed with several copies of the same bunny.
