As the International Court of Justice takes its next steps on investigating and prosecuting war crimes in Israel’s war on Gaza, the top expert on Palestine at the United Nations is pushing for even more international accountability.

In a wide-ranging exclusive interview with The Intercept, U.N. special rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories Francesca Albanese, called for top European Union officials — including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen — to face charges of complicity in war crimes over their support for Israel during its 18-month assault on Gaza.

“The fact that the two highest figures of the EU continue business as usual engagements with Israel is beyond deplorable,” Albanese said. “I’m not someone who says, ‘History will judge them’ — they will have to be judged before then. And they will have to understand that immunity cannot equate with impunity.”

Oh please it would be so funny, put her in a jail next to the RAF

I hope she gets everything she deserves.

She was appointed by the leadership of the EU states, who hand-picked the President and approved the members of her commission. Sufficient leverage hasn’t been placed on the EU elected leaders and their states for them to discard her. She would have to cross several European billionaires to be ousted in such a dramatic fashion.

Not that I necessarily disagree but why the EU in particular when pretty much every other western country is just as complicit with Israel?

She, Francesca Albanese, is and has been always a controversial person according to a report from U.N Watch [ed] and this link in JPost

"A report by United Nations Watch on Wednesday is urging democratic nations to impose sanctions on Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on Palestinian human rights, accusing her of promoting antisemitism, supporting terrorism, and spreading misinformation."

According to the view of some, the whole world must be complicit.

[ed]: typo HRW must be UN watch.

Easier to blame one person instead of a revolving door of who's currently running France, Italy, Germany, etc. etc. etc.?

It's a start. Hopefully, more people get tried and called out.

Still, fuck von der leyen

Because the EU is Israel's biggest trade partner and claim to represent democracy, humanity and all that.

[-] taladar@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

I mean obviously the EU is Israel's biggest trade partner, it is literally a block of almost all the nearby countries they can trade with, but I was more thinking about why not the leaders of those individual countries too? Why focus on the EU which has much less of a direct shared foreign policy than the individual member countries.

We are evolved enough to have some clear red lines no one should cross. Instead, we have a global capitalist system with no red lines, if they limit someones' profit (not to mention religious bs). There should be a wide net over political figures and decision makers over this genocide. They should be either charged, banned from such positions or acquitted.

Every single politician involved in this should be tried for complicity. Of course, that probably won't happen because it's inconvenient, and "who watches the watchmen". It's about fucking time ursula gets called out by such an important figure.

Jesus christ, i'm so tired.

[-] einkorn@feddit.org 0 points 1 month ago

My sweet summer child, nothing will come from this. Zensursular has a proud and storied history of political bullshittery on all levels.

[-] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago

What a joke. I didn't hear of this before, thanks for bringing it up. We're so fucked.

EU continue business as usual

That's not a war crime, and I don't think that's how it works, and I also don't think it's how it should work either.

AFAIK they have not been complicit in the war crimes against Gaza and the Palestinians in any way.
Should we do more to help Palestine? Yes.
Should we do more to prevent Israel from committing war crimes? Also yes.

But has EU been part of ISRAELS war crimes? No I don't think so.

From reading the article this is the extend of complicity they can demonstrate:

Beyond demanding accountability from EU leaders, Albanese said she is working on a report which will expose banks, pensions funds, tech companies, and universities for complicity in Gaza’s destruction.

It's a pathetic argument, and incidentally EU has helped Gaza more than anybody else, does that make EU complicit in the original terrorist attack on Israel that started this? Of course it doesn't.

I fail to understand why that article is upvoted, apart from people being extremely frustrated with the situation.
But I don't think articles like this are helping.

It's because the russians are busy resetting their disinformation campaign on VdL (this is the left-wing of it, the right wing exists as well among antivaxxers and other communities), because apparently Europe is not letting Ukraine fall even if trump doesn't care. https://meduza.io/en/feature/2025/04/19/imagined-common-enemies watch out for the "Eurofascism" buzzword.

But it's pathetic, VdL has no real executive power and the EU decision making is too decentralized to demonize single figureheads with their hamfisted attempts, like it worked with genocide joe.
