Karl Marx, born on this day in 1818, was a foundational political theorist and journalist associated with the philosophy of Marxism.

Among Marx's best-known texts are the "The Communist Manifesto" and the three-volume "Das Kapital", in which he set out to define and explain the behavior of the capitalist mode of production.

Marx's political and philosophical thought have had enormous influence on subsequent intellectual, economic and political history, and his name has been used as an adjective, a noun, and a school of social theory.

Marx's critical theories about society, economics and politics - collectively understood as Marxism - hold that human societies develop through class conflict. In capitalism, this manifests itself in the conflict between the ruling classes (known as the bourgeoisie) that control the means of production, and the working classes (known as the proletariat) that enable these means by selling their labor power in return for wages.

Employing a critical approach known as historical materialism, Marx concluded that, like previous socio-economic systems, capitalism produced internal tensions which would lead to its self-destruction and replacement by a new system known as socialism.

Was at partner's family's house for taco dinner and they were offering crunchy shells... uncooked.

Is this why so many people hate crunchy taco shells? Because they're eating chewy, gummy-ass uncooked shells??

-Sees nice looking apartment at a reasonably priced rent

-Scheduling tour is relatively painless

-Get sent the application, which asks for rental offer

jesse-wtf

This is my first time seeing an application asking what you are offering to pay for rent. Considering the area and the amount of people that seem to be interested I have a feeling I'm going to be priced out of this onedoomer

Last time I wandered around town on foot scooped out some abandoned houses, most run down or burnt. I do fantasize about like having money and fixing them up, not to rent more like just to have people living there. There's something hollow about these places that leaves my soul withered yes-honey-left makes walking around town feel all the more desolate and isolating

Drugs are not for everybody and whether or not you take drugs, it should always be an informed decision and done in moderation.

That being said:

Drugs are great and everybody should do them at least 30 times.

Currently sitting in a lovely newly-opened Palestinian cafe in southern Ontario within a quick walk of my workplace. Can't say which one due to doxxing potential. Death to capitalism of course but the owners are lovely people. And the ambiance is wonderful and the food and drinks are fantastic. This is going to be a new favourite place.

This place is getting busy. Love seeing that. Very mixed clientele too, also a good sign.

Bit of a breakthrough in mental health.

"Be yourself" surprisingly takes a lot of hard work, especially to get good at something and to stick with it. I've treated skills and personality traits the way they show up in MLP: FiM, where you get your cutie mark and you intuitively know what your likes and dislikes are just like that. For example, I worked my ass off to bench 225 and while I still have a long way to go in the fitness department, I most certainly did not start off with that weight and dragged my ass kicking and screaming to the gym because I simply was driven by the reward of having larger muscles. Someone recommended guitar to me on this site, and I've wanted to do something creative so that's more or less the same thing, and if I ever want to continue my education it's also the same way, it's a process to slog through things to make myself really get into something. So in a sense, I can pick and choose some of my personality traits and skills and passions to some extent, rather than the universe choosing them for me.

Every time there's police violence or overreach or corruption or just plain old harrasment, you hear the chorus "it's just a few bad apples." Mother fucker, what is the saying about a few bad apples in a bunch. Is it "a few bad apples does nothing to the bunch actually" do we keep a spoiled bunch. Why has did it enter as an idiom to say a few bad apples for thin blue line types when cops do something horrible

I may have finally gotten a job, but it’s a seasonal position so I’m making an effort to still apply and take the odd interview.

Does anyone else hate when rejection emails always have the “we received soooo many applications” bullshit? Like is it a demoralization technique, how is this necessary?

To me it reads “We’re spoiled for choice. Fuck you.” and people wonder why there’s a youth unemployment problem? Because you need to meet 100% of the qualifications and beat out hundreds if not thousands for any given job.

I work/study/do research in healthcare and I've been recently thinking about how much of modern medicine/healthcare is based on the guarantee of antibiotics working properly. On the other hand, there are more and more resistant bacteria floating around the communities, ie. outside the ICU where they usually come from.

Antibiotic resistance and development is yet another barrier that capitalism fundamentally cannot overcome, regardless of how many reforms you make. Research for new drugs take a long time and is very expensive. Along with this, the correct way of using antibiotics is avoiding overuse or just reducing the use in general, specially of new drugs that bacteria can't resist yet. That means that companies can't expect to make a profit out of any new drug that they develop, since trying to use them as little as possible is the rational way.

In other words, the profit motive is unable to create new antibiotics in the manner that the world needs right now, let alone in the much worse future. If we lose antibiotics, modern medicine mostly comes to a halt. For example, say goodbye to surgeries and also to your little niece that got an ear infection that every kid gets at least once. Tooth extractions becomes a very high risk procedure, too.

What a fitting day this was to open a discussion in my studies about pursuing a post-grad position by re-centering Marx and class to my field of study. I got a green light too, they thought that it was a great idea and that my analysis of class being marginalized is correct.

Ask me in 6 years if I still think this was a good idea.

The change from having a work I can walk to to not has affected my fitness level but not my walking pace. I’m not getting winded but it’s still kinda funny to walk at what is a leisurely pace to me and get sweaty and have my heart rate get pretty high.

One day i will understand why it's more economically advantageous to have the entire department use 50% of their time filling out forms rather than hire 2 people to do all the work more effectively and also well (Because they have expertise in secretarial stuff)

Every time it's explained by some administrator they seem to gloss over over the part where doctors spend most of their time doing non-doctor things and go directly to the savings from not hiring two medical secretaries
