Image is the famous photograph Raising a Flag Over the Reichstag, taken during the Battle of Berlin.

On Friday is May 9th, which is the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, which Russia, among other places, celebrates as the day when the Soviets defeated the Nazis. Naturally, one of the current hotspots of fascism in the world today, Ukraine, is essentially threatening that they might strike Russia or even Moscow itself during that timeframe. Any such strike would almost certainly be symbolic and not aimed at anything too important, as I doubt even Zelensky and his American handlers would actually want to kill a world leader, not least somebody like Xi Jinping. But I would not be surprised if they tried something nonetheless, if only to disrupt the event in some way and not actually kill anybody.

And, as we're on this topic, @EllenKelly@hexbear.net has reminded me that Tuesday is the anniversary of the Nazis burning the Institut für Sexualwissenschaf in 1933, an early institute advocating for the rights of LGBT people, and which also provided early forms of gender-affirming surgeries, as well as hormone therapies. We are currently seeing a crackdown on LGBT rights throughout swathes of the imperial core (as well as countries in the periphery, to the extent that those rights existed there already), and this Nazi-inspired movement will be similarly defeated in the future.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

This conflict with Pakistan/india is escalating faster than my ability to become properly educated on it while working constantly and I’d like to say thank you to the posters in advance for sharing their knowledge of it in on here! I’ve also found Arunannow on twitch (tamil guy who Hasan has spoken to a few times) to be very informative and he’s starting to freak out right now

This mayor getting arrested in Jersey thing seems like an obvious escalation to arrest of political opponents with ICE as the Gestapo.

  • facility is run by GEO, who have a $1t contract with the federal government and obviously every relevant politician holds stock in. The mayor has actively fought against it since its inception
  • he is in the Dem primary for governor, not polling terribly and is vocally anti trump
  • I haven't seen the entire video and don't care to, but according to the article, he went on with the congress people, was told to leave and complied, rejoining the protest on the street. Masked ICE agents then dragged him back onto the property and arrested him in handcuffs. AFAIK he is still in detention

Given that trump is also 'looking at' suspending habeas corpus for migrants (aka anyone they 'suspect' is a migrant), I fear that we are moving toward the armed crackdown on minorities, in a matter of months. Shit makes me anxious as fuck

Pakistan has started it's retaliation against India, they have named it Operation Bunyan Al Marsoos.

India and Pakistan are at war.

Pakistan has fired Fatah-1 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket systems (GMLRS) and Fatah-2 Short Range Ballistic Missiles (SRBMs) at military bases in India. All conventional missiles at this time. India is responding with air operations against Pakistan.

There are a lot of questions about the potential nuclear aspects of such a war, the article I'll link below covers that quite well, despite the title it's not just about missile defeat strategy, and yes I'll repost it for a third or fourth time, if anyone has a better source describing it feel free to share:

Decker Eveleth, 26 April 2025 - Pakistan and Missile Defense Defeat Strategies

Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

[-] jackmaoist@hexbear.net 11 points 41 minutes ago

I hope I don't get bombed or nuked.

[-] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 8 points 29 minutes ago

I know it sounds obvious, but shelter in place and stay away from any military bases if possible. Stay safe.

[-] riseuppikmin@hexbear.net 6 points 22 minutes ago* (last edited 22 minutes ago)

Increasingly obvious post but on the off chance it saves someone- look up right now, to the extent that you can, where military bases near you are and if one is remotely close, ask friends and family, right now, if you can stay with them. You'd have to feel out how safe/unsafe travel currently is.

Stay safe comrades

Another way this India/Pakistan confrontation benefits the US is that it provides more precedent for the possibility of hot conventional war between nuclear powers.

This could make US intervention over Taiwan more plausible, increasing deterrence, while also diverting the Chinese military industrial complex to replace and reinforce exports to Pakistan (particularly air defense).

[-] Eldungeon2@hexbear.net 5 points 18 minutes ago

It's interesting because both countries play both the west and BRICS. By the end of this crisis they may have to quit fence sitting and that could have tremendous implications for the future.

Venezuela and Burkina Faso Strengthen South-South Cooperation - Telesur English

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro met with his Burkinabé counterpart, Ibrahim Traoré, to enhance South-South cooperation, continuing diplomatic efforts first established under Comandante Hugo Chávez.

For the past two decades, Venezuela and Burkina Faso have engaged in strategic partnerships in energy, mining, and education, forging 27 bilateral agreements across sectors including politics, scientific collaboration, military cooperation, security, agriculture, civil protection, and education.

Currently, both nations are negotiating 14 new projects, reinforcing their commitment to non-intervention, respect for international law, and opposition to unilateral U.S. sanctions. On February 7, 2024, Venezuela and Burkina Faso launched the First Joint Commission Meeting, where technical cooperation discussions advanced 22 projects, according to Foreign Minister Yván Gil. Diplomatic relations between the two nations were officially established on September 2, 2003, under Hugo Chávez’s administration, as part of his vision of fostering African solidarity and South-South diplomacy.

Just learning today, after finding out that someone skimmed my card and spent all my food assistance money for the month, that in Biden's final days the Dems came together to pass a bill from Tom Cole which, among other things, says that if your social benefits are stolen you cannot recover them or be reimbursed -- and they called it the "American Relief Act". Fuck the Democrats to hell, why are they so awful.

Pakistan has low yield nuclear artillery rockets called Nasr/Hatef-9, with a range of only 70km/40 miles with sub-kiloton yields, so it might have to be just the 0.5 kiloton megathread initially.

can't wait for that meme someone made of mercouris smiling in the thumbnail of a vid that says "only 3 nukes detonated today" to become reality...

Two NOTAMs of... note

  1. NOTAM over Russian airspace, this was claimed to be the source of last Oreshnik missile launch. Coincides with US embassy in Kiev warning of a "significant air raid" in the coming days.

  1. Pakistan has closed its national airspace following indian ballistic missile attacks on a military airbase.

[-] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 9 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

It could be an Oreshnik IRBM, it could be a completey new ballistic or hypersonic weapons platform we don't know about, or it could be the February 2025 announced Iskander-1000 MRBM, with a range of between 1000-1300km depending on the warhead, or it could even be Iranian ballistic missiles, it's suspected that the missiles were transferred without the launchers last year, and that the transfer of the launchers, is imminent. But that last one about Iran is a rumour.

Due to the nature of the launch of an Oreshnik type weapon (identical to a nuclear armed ICBM or IRBM), Russia has to give forewarning before a launch through nuclear backchannels, so that other nuclear powers know that Russia is launching a conventional weapon, and not a nuclear weapon. Such warnings don't have to be days in advance, they can be short, even 15-30 minutes before launch. This is why Putin talks about warnings before an Oreshnik launch during his public speeches on the topic.

This need to provide forewarnings, and the similarity to a nuclear armed ICBM launch, is why the United States did not pursue an Oreshnik type weapon during the Bush Jr administration two decades ago, even though there was much interest in one. Converting a Trident-II SLBM to use kinetic warheads was the plan. The US instead chose to pursue "hypersonic weapons". Given the latest US military budget proposals, which include approximately $800 million being allocated to ballistic missile programmes, it seems as if the US is now reversing course and going back to pursuing ballistic missile development. There's even $85 million in the proposed US military budget allocated for the accelerated development of an Oreshnik class weapon, an IRBM, for the US Army.

India has targeted airbases in Pakistan. local source

CW: bombing

[-] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 11 points 1 hour ago

This is uh Not Good huh. Seems like a huge escalation, directly striking military targets. Thus far India's excuse has been that they were only striking "legitimate" targets ie "terror camps." You can't really wave away striking Pakistani airbases as "terror camps."

[-] CanYouFeelItMrKrabs@hexbear.net 10 points 1 hour ago

Srinagar airport in India was also targeted by a suspected drone strike

[-] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 18 points 2 hours ago

Pakistan issued a NOTAM closing all national airspace.

[-] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 15 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Yeah, it's confirmed for now that at least Nur Khan Airbase in Pakistan has been hit by India, using stand off weapons, I'd guess Storm Shadow/SCALP-EG cruise missiles. But the type of weapon is a guess, no confirmation on that. Attack is confirmed though.

Yeah this is now a big escalation. Flying around some drones is one thing, this is different.

I heard some architectural people cry about how the evul soviets oppressed the baltics with the riga tv tower, because it was “a monstrosity that dominates and overwhelms the medieval city of riga”. So I look it up, expecting a Le Corbusier Beton behemoth aaaaand its non-intrusive and looks like a spaceship instead.

[-] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 hours ago

that's some sexy soviet era architecture

[-] tocopherol@hexbear.net 20 points 4 hours ago

That's more beautiful than most tv towers, where're the complaints of the monstrous dominating presence of the Eiffel Tower?

[-] Sinisterium@hexbear.net 16 points 3 hours ago

I don’t think so. Funny enough they were comparing it to the imperial tower build on ghorman in andor and sharing stories about how evul putler and authoritarianism is threatening a free world.
