Me playing Elder Scrolls games.
Merchant: "Gee, I wonder where all my stuff went? My shelves are all completely empty!"
Me: "Hey good morning, would you like to buy everything that the merchant down the street owns?"
"What's that, how did the unique, one of a kind golden claw that I just returned to you end up in my inventory? You're mistaken this isn't the golden claw. It's the.... gilded claw. Very different. Wanna buy it?"
Down the street? I just sell it to the merchant I stole it from!
iirc in Morrowind you can't do that? It's been a while since I played. I've been playing Oblivion the last few days and you can only sell to fences. Never played Skyrim tho
In Skyrim you also have to sell to fences, unless you are stealing from one of a couple/few invisible hidden chests that store the Travelling Kajiit Merchant's wares, when they are in that town. In that one case, the stuff isn't marked as stolen, and you can sell back to the merchant you just robbed. His gold is in the chest as well, so you have to leave the gold if you want to sell him back his stuff.

And now the merchant’s guild has put an open contract on your head for 20,000 gold, the equivalent of several million dollars. Time to retreat to the feywilds with a few wheelbarrows of foodstuffs to shift your bounty elsewhere.
Rookie error for a goblin merchant... Come on...
