Look at the history and lead up to WWI ... the first great war ... it didn't have to happen and it only happened because this country went here, did this and tit for tat, we protect that guy with this guy because of that guy ... then full blown war ... all because a bunch of rich guys, kings and queens decided that was what was supposed to happen and everyone followed along like unthinking robots. But we write about it and remember it as some great event that happened for some heroic reasons.

A lot of it is bluster. But it's also illustrative of how these names get laid out in the first place. Why is it called Iran and not Persia? Why do so many South American cities and territories have Spanish names? Why is Old New York not called New Amsterdam?

The US love calling itself "America" . the argument I always (from non us people) hear is that "every country uses the last word of it's name". So if you change their name, remember to refer to it as " child" and the citizens as children
Apparently we have successfully appropriated the name because no one else in North America would even consider calling themselves Americans.
