JD Vance attempted a charm offensive on Tuesday, and failed with the charm while succeeding in being offensive.

It happened during an announcement that former Donald Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani’s son, Andrew Giuliani, would be leading a task force for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico next year.

Rather than stoke excitement for a global event that could be a tourism cash cow for North America, Vance decided to take a different approach — and joked about deporting the potential thousands of tourists visiting the U.S. for the occasion.

these absolute abject cretins, fucking beyond a disgrace they are ‘leading’ this country

They represent who we are. Either fully mask off shitty people or lazy AF who don't care. This is America until we prove otherwise.

Oh hahahaha, now watch as you have the lowest WC attendance in history and be the first modern WC to lose money.

[-] adarza@lemmy.ca 55 points 1 month ago

losing money on a sure thing would be totally on brand for donvict & co.

Ticket sales are already going so badly that they're CHEAPER on the secondhand market! Scalpers are taking a loss to get rid of them, which is pretty much unheard of for an event like a world cup.

People are even more wary of traveling to Trump's US than to the Emir's Qatar or Putin's Russia.

Cities hosting the WC almost never recoup their investments. Sure, it's a windfall for a select few, but it is a bad investment for everyone else.

I don't know why ~~you're~~ you were being downvoted, you're absolutely right.

As documented by an excellent Last Week Tonight segment and also another, FIFA and a select few rich people and corporations profiting off of lucrative contracts snatch up all the income and leave everyone else with all the expenses.

Dear Foreigner,

If you are coming to the US for the world cup you are fucking stupid. You're going to spend thousands of your preferred currency to get harassed by Customs and if you fuck up and get arrested for whatever little thing the police that stops you has up his ass that day you run the risk of ending up in South America or Africa but not the part you are from, in a jail somewhere getting fucked.

Unless you are white, if you're white come on over, have a beer. Remember, though, even if you are Spanish, Italian, Greek, or any of those other darkies you gay commie Europeans call white, you are going to get lumped in with the Mexicans, especially if you speak Mexican or eye tie.

Fuck you, countries full,

XOXO JD 😘 🛋😘 Vance XOXO

Nah we'll arrest random whites too.

People willingly went to Qatar for the World Cup. Sports fans are fucking dumb and/or don't give a shit about anything as long as they can see their team play and win. And for those that don't know or forgot, Qatar killed thousands of workers violating human rights and basic safety when building all their stadiums.

How funny will it be when all of the seats are empty? Americans don't care about soccer, this event will be funded by tourism and now those folks will be opting out. If I were planning this event I'd be livid. Vance, shut your stupid fucking mouth and never speak again as long as you live.

[-] mcv@lemm.ee 21 points 1 month ago

It's apparently also in Mexico and Canada, so you can still visit matches there.

Would be funny if the stadiums in Mexico and Canada were chock full while those in the US were half empty. You'd hope they'd finally get the message.

Reminder that every time they say something that causes offense they say it was just a joke.

Narrator: it was not a joke

[-] bampop@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Treating all foreigners as criminals is something he's so excited about, he just can't keep quiet about it. There probably are some people dumb enough to go to that country just to watch some sports, but they aren't going to have a good time.

[-] b161@lemmy.blahaj.zone 59 points 1 month ago

If you go to this you’re a fucking idiot. Not worth being sent to an El Salvador concentration camp just to watch a soccer match. Just watch it on tv.

[-] Zacpod@lemmy.world 46 points 1 month ago

People went to Qatar to sit in slave-built stadiums. Don't expect any morals from FIFA fans.

[-] Red_October@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago

No morals, but maybe self preservation isn't too much to expect.

As long as MAGA policies and the walking farts responsible for them are in place/in charge, I will never again set foot on US soil. There are plenty of other places to visit.

Fortunately, if this shit keeps up, there are two other countries where to celebrate matches. Mexico is shaping up nicely for the World Cup, and tourism comes natural to our culture.

[-] tankplanker@lemmy.world 35 points 1 month ago

That its being co hosted will backfire on the US. If it was just the US and nobody turned up they can and will blame football for that rather than their own idiocy, but because Mexico and Canada are also hosting matches if they get great attendance then its clearly an issue with the US.

If you want to go, go to the matches in Mexico or Canada, spend your money there.

I would not take such words as "jokes" anymore. I take them as an open and dire warning not to travel to the US until the government has been taken care of.

[-] meme_historian@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 1 month ago

For real. I'm not risking losing thousands of Euros on flights because some CBP asshole on a power trip denies me entry. Not to mention the very real possibility to be held at some kind of detention facility

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago

Just heard it on the radio that student exchanges with the US are failing; First, because parents here are afraid what happens to non-citizens in the US, and second, because US parents are wary to have foreigners in their home (no because they are afraid of foreigners or kids, but of what the US "ICE" GeStaPo might do).

Anyone who is mad enough to visit the US for attending a sports game in this day and age almost deserves that treatment. Like, are you ok?

[-] bob_lemon@feddit.org 26 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

With games taking place in both Mexico and Canada, does that make the entire US into flyover state?

Because what we really want from our government officials is more laughing at the pain and suffering of others.

[-] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

that, and to chill anyone that MIGHT come to America for the American games out of coming to America for the American games and ensure America doesnt get any of that sweet tourism money.

5 bucks says Mexico and Canada's stadiums are full, while Americas stadiums are maybe..lets be generous and say 1/3rd full, and I'd wager most of that would be from super low cost tickets in desperation to get people in the seats so it doesnt look completely empty during broadcast.

I've been to over 50 countries in all seven continents, and I've lived in four of those. Never did I feel anything that I would would describe as fear.

I will be travelling to the US for an exchange program next month. I am afraid. To the point I am actually considering cancelling what could be a career changing opportunity.

[-] TotalCourage007@lemm.ee 14 points 1 month ago

I would consider canceling any dealings with US if said person isn't white, even that is a stretch for this dogshit administration. I hope we see a general protest by making the World Cup barren.

As a sane person I am deeply sorry for any strife our government causes. Do your best to stay safe!

[-] mtoboggan@feddit.org 45 points 1 month ago

They never do. Hell, they all went to Qatar. Fifa is a system genuinely built on corruption. And although corruption is money-driven most of the time, it‘s most notably a corruption of minds and souls.

Even the fucking Nazis made sure Germany was as hospitable as possible to all visitors in the 1936 Olympics. The blatant Nazi propaganda, however, backfired and many people left with a sour taste in their mouths after the event.

What a swell idea, Vance! I've been trying to figure out how to persuade my compatriots why visiting the US aren't worth the risks, and it really helps when the Vice President makes my case for me. Cheers, buddy!
