0.1%? What? How do people move in Cyprus, do they crawl instead, or fly, or something?

[-] huppakee@lemm.ee 17 points 5 days ago

possible explanation would be that 99.9% walk and cycle. but not for 30 mins or more. Still crazy statistic

[-] flamingo_pinyata@sopuli.xyz 8 points 5 days ago

Yeah, I suspect bad data or misunderstood question. Even if you go everywhere by car or public transport, accumulating 30 min of walking is not that unlikely.

[-] quediuspayu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 5 days ago

I think almost no one took it as cumulative or underestimate how long it takes to walk anywhere. I could easily accumulate 30 minutes of walking during work and I'm sitting in an office most of the time.

Look how tiny it is! You can cross Cyprus in less than a 30 minute walk. There's simply no reason to walk more than 30 minutes a day.

I wanna see you cross Cyprus in less than a 30 minutes walk lol

Buy me a ticket, I'll give it a shot.

No need for a return, I'll figure that part out myself

[-] scytale@lemm.ee 3 points 5 days ago

They walk for less than 30 mins a day.

Everyone drive everywhere. And park as close as possible to their destination place

And yes, when not driving, many people just sit on their arse pretty much the whole day

bizarre coutry selection. Switzerland and UK are not included, alongside the usual non included balkan states, so maybe it's EU? but serbia yes, then you have norway added in, also turkey, which is always a toss up here, so what's the grouping?

[-] huppakee@lemm.ee 8 points 5 days ago

Map is based on data from Eurostat, which is an organisation that when it comes to its data is like a federation of 'federated' national statistical organisations so they don't collect data themselves or choose in which countries they do or do not collect data.

Norway isn't EU.

[-] huppakee@lemm.ee 7 points 5 days ago

So the Netherlands basically beats the rest by at least 1.6x?

[-] djsoren19@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 5 days ago

honestly, are you surprised?

[-] huppakee@lemm.ee 2 points 5 days ago

Yes a little bit, but i guess the Dutch cycle all across the country where people in other countries only tend to do so if they live in a bike-friendly city.

[-] merde@sh.itjust.works 6 points 5 days ago

this map should be regional and not national.

Flatlands and mountains would give completely different percentages.

[-] huppakee@lemm.ee 4 points 5 days ago

Seems like they don't have data by region, but they do have by gender (don't ask me why though): https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/databrowser/view/HLTH_EHIS_PE6E__custom_12706180/default/table?lang=en

[-] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 6 points 5 days ago

Brits aren't Europeans. Got it.

[-] GissaMittJobb@lemmy.ml 4 points 5 days ago

Spain is a bit surprising to me, given their high degree of urbanization.

[-] merde@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

no data for UK & Switzerland?

& Albania + exYugoslavia

[-] Prandom_returns@lemm.ee 3 points 5 days ago

"Observation flags: (u) low reliability"

Yeah, that tracks.

[-] Tim_Bisley@piefed.social 2 points 5 days ago

I'm surprised by Slovakia? On par with Denmark. Do they have a decent biking infrastructure there?
