If there's one thing Japan loves, it is economical competition. There are like 40 different ways to pay at a shop, it's absurd.

[-] kurcatovium@lemm.ee 47 points 3 weeks ago

And yet everyone will pay with cash.

This used to be the case 15 years ago, but unless you go to some tiny independently owned place, you can usually pay with credit card or suica. If not, then with one of those QR code payment options. I rarely carry cash anymore.

[-] kalleboo@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah when I went over my bank statements for last year, I only went to an ATM a single time in the whole year. Mostly only need cash for stuff like parking

[-] kurcatovium@lemm.ee 0 points 3 weeks ago

Idk, I wasn't there myself. My friend went there multiple times though (last time before corona) and he said cash was often/usually needed.

[-] Slaxis@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 3 weeks ago

How long ago was that? Even 7-8 years ago it was more true but it’s changed quite a bit in recent years

[-] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 45 points 3 weeks ago

That's not absurd, that's awesome

[-] ripcord@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago

It can be both!

[-] Zaphod@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 3 weeks ago

Absurdly awesome!

[-] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 20 points 3 weeks ago

Wow, all of that and no crypto. That's impressive.

[-] semperverus@lemmy.world 17 points 3 weeks ago

Japan is permanently in the '90s (and I love it).

[-] SomethingBurger@jlai.lu 31 points 3 weeks ago

I've seen the phrase "Japan has been stuck in the year 2000 since 1980"

[-] dubyakay@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 weeks ago

It's almost like Japanese boomers keep maintaining the status quo at the expense of younger generations.

[-] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 18 points 3 weeks ago

I can’t pay with interpretive dance?! I shall not be frequenting this establishment. Good day to you.

[-] SnortsGarlicPowder@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 weeks ago

There is a DDR cabinet in the arcade that will turn your Dance into Tickets which are accepted.

[-] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 weeks ago

This is one of the most Japanese things I have ever heard.

That Q+ looking one near the bottom left is how Apple Pay came to be in Japan.

[-] Sat@lemmynsfw.com 4 points 3 weeks ago

If only that worked on dlsite

[-] Matriks404@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

That's hardly a bad thing unless you can't use the most common way (e.g. paying by credit/debit card) in shops.

[-] Toes@ani.social 2 points 3 weeks ago

With that many options, it's your bad if the card doesn't work. Wow haha

[-] sadTruth@lemmy.hogru.ch 1 points 3 weeks ago

Innovation and competition at it's peak: You get to choose the color of your noose.

But (presumably) no cash or crypto because someone has to take a 3% cut.

[-] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 weeks ago

Is there some science to what facilitates common standards vs. dotzens of islands? Convenience of the user is only one factor (if at all), see printers.

no klarna...... ABSOLUTE W

[-] psyc@lemmy.world 70 points 3 weeks ago

Does that mean I can get a 3rd party eShop on my Nintendo Switch? 😆

[-] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 46 points 3 weeks ago

Ha, that would be excellent. Don't forget Sony and PlayStation.

[-] kurcatovium@lemm.ee 15 points 3 weeks ago

Yes you can! And Nintendo will then sue your ass off :-D

[-] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Me: but I'm completely following the law!

Nintendo: Your point?

[-] Scrollone@feddit.it 13 points 3 weeks ago

Haha yeah sure. That will never happen.

[-] mrbubblesort@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago

I wish, but this seems specifically aimed at smartphones only. However, this could open the door for Nintendo to make their own eshop for Android or Apple, and I suspect that's what the gov is going for because it would directly benefit Japanese companies at the expense of foreign ones.

[-] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

Why would Nintendo want a shop on Android and Apple? They don't own those platforms...

[-] theangryseal@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

They do make games for phones though. I haven’t heard of any in a while but I remember some dust being kicked up about Mario coming to smartphones about a decade ago.

I’m on my phone now actually. Let me look.

Yep.

[-] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago

Huh, I never knew. That's interesting!

[-] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 weeks ago

They sell games on those platforms

They would love to not give a cut

[-] ZephyrXero@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

Now do it for game consoles

[-] Siegfried@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yakuza is heading your way

[-] piyuv@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Yes! It’s good they’re doing this. It would be better if they weren’t letting Nintendo brick homebrewed consoles.

[-] arararagi@ani.social 1 points 3 weeks ago

Japan was the first one to prohibit tinkering with game saves and consoles, they aren't going to revert it now.
