Thought about it recently as I realized that I really like the song.

I really like the song unironically.

I’m no stranger to love.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 25 points 3 weeks ago

It’s a certified bop.

You know the rules and so do I.

[-] 200ok@lemmy.world 18 points 3 weeks ago

I listen to the whole song when I'm Rick rolled.

A full commitment's what I'm thinkin' of.

[-] Scubus@sh.itjust.works 13 points 3 weeks ago

No you guys don't

You wouldn't get this from any other guy

[-] Agrivar@lemmy.world 35 points 3 weeks ago

I honestly feel like people who hate that song are the outliers.

[-] chicken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 3 weeks ago

Maybe but iirc the joke started on 4chan, with the idea that everyone there was so used to traditional horrific shock images/videos that they don't bother them, but such a person might be uniquely vulnerable to being annoyed by a cheesy love song presented in the same way.

[-] Goretantath@lemm.ee 3 points 3 weeks ago

Yeqh, really says something when someone gets pissed off for not getting their dose of isis beheading videos and instead is made to watch a love song music video..

[-] weariedfae@sh.itjust.works 16 points 3 weeks ago

Look, I'm never bothered by a rick roll because before rickrolling there was goatse. Rickrolling is a vast improvement.

[-] blarth@thelemmy.club 2 points 3 weeks ago

People who didn’t open an attachment that played “I’M LOOKING AT PORN OVER HERE” in the office complaining about getting a nice unexpected serenade from Rick Astley.

[-] OrteilGenou@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago

I liked it when it came out, still do

Well of course of I know him, he's me

[-] Hylactor@sopuli.xyz 10 points 3 weeks ago

I think it was so successful because of how solid the song is. As soon as you hear that aggressive drum intro the song is so catchy that it all appears at once in your head.

I host my own cloud and various other services for myself and whole family. Any 404 resolves to a rickroll and I'm never mad, often letting it play fully.

[-] valkyre09@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

404 - I have no idea what you’re looking for, but I know this’ll cheer you up …

[-] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 weeks ago

The Not Found error page did not want to give you up, nor let you down.

[-] SLVRDRGN@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

Rick Astley is the shiznit.

[-] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 weeks ago

Fun and possibly helpful fact: it's got a BPM of 114, which makes it suitable for compressions-only CPR!

[-] Zahille7@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

I love Never Gonna Give You Up *and Together Forever

Rick Astley has an amazing voice. His covers he did a couple years ago on YouTube are pretty good too.

[-] lukecooperatus@lemmy.ml 6 points 3 weeks ago

I am one of those people!

[-] kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I unapologetically love the version by I Fight Dragons. And the original is really not that bad.

[-] Engywuck@lemm.ee 5 points 3 weeks ago

As a someone that grew up in the '80s, that song is amazing.

[-] Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 weeks ago

Yep. For some reason I've never tired of that song. Others I would hate hearing 1/100th as much but not it.

[-] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

This song is great.

[-] watson387@sopuli.xyz 4 points 3 weeks ago

This was the shit when I was like 9. I still dig it now.

[-] Phen@lemmy.eco.br 4 points 3 weeks ago

I didn't know the song before Rick Roll was a thing and I quite enjoyed it. I have other songs by Rick Astley in my playlist these days.

[-] comfy@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 weeks ago

I knew people still under 30 who put it on a playlist because they liked it and didn't know it was a meme.

[-] vaionko@sopuli.xyz 4 points 3 weeks ago

I always listen to the whole song when I get rickrollred

[-] JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee 3 points 3 weeks ago

I don't think it would be an unpopular opinion to say that I also like that song!

[-] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Not going to lie, I eventually started to get into it.

[-] Hobbes_Dent@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

It was a big hit in my days. Had the cassette. Legit listened to it unironically a lot and as such don’t mind at all.

Wish he’d come here from Reddit.

[-] hperrin@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 weeks ago

Yes, hi, hello. Feel free.

[-] curiousaur@reddthat.com 2 points 3 weeks ago

What a way to admit to the world you dont like it.

[-] MTK@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Reading much?

[-] Zenith@lemm.ee 2 points 3 weeks ago

A few years back I was sitting in a cute little Italian cafe and the music was all instrumental covers of popular music and sure enough 3/4ths of the way through our meal we got rickrolled by an instrumental version lol it was funny as it dawned on me “…is this…??”

[-] MidsizedSedan@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

The first and last time I did Kareoke was this song. Audiance memberes joined in to try and save me.

Never again (Kareoke that is. Song is fine though)

[-] Goretantath@lemm.ee 2 points 3 weeks ago

Whenever its in a Siivagunner rip or a cover by someone i know, its always a good time.

[-] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I was mildly a fan when the song was popular, and tricking people into playing it was funny for about 5 minutes, but it quickly became annoying. The Thanksgiving Day parade bit was kind of that fad's Star Wars Christmas Special.

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
