Interesting. Obviously Valve has them spooked. When was the last time MS came out with a product that at least made an appearance of caring about what users want?

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 59 points 1 year ago

Honestly if I was them I would be very worried. As people move away from the Microsoft ecosystem Microsoft slowly loses control of the market.

The Steamdeck is flying off the shelves. I hope that many other companies start going Linux outside of value as the more companies involved the less likely one will ruin everything.

[-] PlasticExistence@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago

Best estimate that I’ve been about to find on Steam Deck sales is somewhere between 4-6 million, which considering everything is astounding. I’m on my second Deck (upgraded to OLED).

I actually decided to sit out the Switch 2 launch because I’m so satisfied with the Deck (and a lack of groundbreaking Nintendo games at launch).

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 14 points 1 year ago

Assuming you are right that's about half of the total Wii U sales

Small compared to well known giants but this is really the first real successful console Value has launched

The Windows ecosystem is an abominable pile of half-finished apps and dark patterns that should be slam dunked into the trash. The problem is in the leadership that is laser-focused on milking business users who are used to Microsoft's abusive practices.

laser-focused on milking business users who are used to Microsoft's abusive practices.

The funniest thing I notice is how IT departments have to enforce all kinds of group policies and custom scripts and things to crowbar Windows into shutting up and just being a work OS.

It's just standard practice at this point to fight the thing into submission to get an install image that's not nagging users or trying to upsell them on cloud nonsense and whatnot.

[-] Joeffect@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

It would of been smart to redo the whole thing and start over after they said windows 10 would be the last windows...

Fuck compatibility and just start over with windows 2... Get rid of the bloat and crap... But yeah that would actually make more sense than making more profit...

Not even sure they care any more. They make so much money from corporate Office use and Azure that everything else could disappear tomorrow.

Half the world went from applications to web based stuff years ago. Them and Amazon are now running most of that, regardless of you using Windows or Linux.

I prefer freedom from windows to freedom of windows

[-] BlueBockser@programming.dev 5 points 1 year ago

I also prefer windowless basements

[-] Montreal_Metro@lemmy.ca 36 points 1 year ago

Freedom from windows. Thanks.

[-] VirgilMastercard@reddthat.com 34 points 1 year ago

This is a bit like the Playstation slogan "play has no limits". No limits except for, well, everything

[-] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago

"Play has no limits, but your credit card does. Let's aim for that."

[-] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 5 points 1 year ago

Well that's a cooler slogan at least compared to the retro one, how'd it go...

"Live in your world, play in our walled garden locked behind a PSN account that might suddenly withdraw access to things you paid for while shuffling different tier systems and prices around and remember the BMG music rootkits? That was fun."

... Or something like that, it's been so long.

If all you know are walls, windows will feel like freedom

[-] germanatlas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 27 points 1 year ago

Assuming it’s gonna be a mostly normal windows OS, this will have an idle menu battery life of 1 hour

[-] yggstyle@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

Charge it in the morning and it's dead when you go to use it. Good news is: your bag is nice and warm now. That's what you wanted, right? .... right?

[-] lmuel@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 year ago

This has happened to me way too frequently back when I had windows on my laptop lol

[-] Der_Fossyler@feddit.org 25 points 1 year ago

Let's see if they can optimize W11 for this and challenge SteamOS 💪

Even if I root for Linux, competition is always good and drives Innovation.

[-] metaStatic@kbin.earth 43 points 1 year ago

competition is always good

/me gestures at the hundreds of streaming platforms

good for who?

[-] pennomi@lemmy.world 60 points 1 year ago

In a way, streaming platforms aren’t truly competition because they’re founded on the idea of exclusivity. If they all had the same content, it would be good for the consumer.

As always, copyright rules cause innovation to be slowed, exactly the opposite of what capitalists claim.

[-] VirgilMastercard@reddthat.com 30 points 1 year ago

That's actually a good point and I hadn't thought of that before. A bajillion streaming services would be fine if they all had the same content.

Music streaming services seems more like true competition. For the most part, they all have the same music.

[-] metaStatic@kbin.earth 13 points 1 year ago

The kicker is that music suffers from the exact same copyright system. The big labels could absolutely start their own walled garden if they wanted.

[-] Truscape@lemm.ee 10 points 1 year ago

Wouldn't the ease of access for music piracy in comparison to video piracy be the true barrier keeping them in check? Audio doesn't exactly have massive file sizes, and the ability to rip audio from any source has become more accessible than ever.

I wonder when streaming services may have their "Napster moment".

I don't think that's competition, more IP holder rent-seeking.

Linux is free, so it's not like they care too much about competition. It may put some pressure on SteamOS, but I doubt it as it is already way better than W11 for handhelds.

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 year ago

Last time I checked Valve controls a lot of the ecosystem. Right now Value is a pretty good company but if they get to much control they will follow the pattern of enshitification. Lots of options is good.

Right now I use a lot of Gog as there isn't any DRM.

Valve will not change at least as long as Gaben is in command, and since it's a money printing machine for the owner I'm pretty sure it will stay consumer friendly for quite a bit longer than Gaben. Enshittification is a direct consequence of a company being beholden to shareholders more than anything else, and in this case there are none.

[-] BigMikeInAustin@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It's the personality change of the owner. From being happy with making a crap ton of money per year to now wanting to see the profit increase 10% every year.

[-] Truscape@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

Thats usually a consequence of fiduciary responsibility, no? If you're not publicly traded, you have no such chains. Valve is privately held, and therefore untouchable in that regard. They also release their software to the public pretty often (OpenXR for VR, indirectly contributing to the Wine project via Proton, and now TF2 with a non-commercial license).

Unless the next head of the company makes an IPO, the path seems steady. And even if the IPO occurs, the momentum is already kickstarted, and we have access to the fruits of their labor (funded by our game purchases).

[-] vane@lemmy.world 22 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

She actually said that live during xbox live. This is exact moment. https://youtu.be/_M3QwLBrg8g?t=2351

I was watching with one eye when she said that and I was like waaaat ?

[-] Truscape@lemm.ee 17 points 1 year ago

"Device battery life is like air conditioning. It becomes useless once you open Windows."

  • somebody
[-] Astertheprince@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 year ago

First thing I would do if I got that thing would be to wipe it and install SteamOS on it for the best user experience. Way better and faster than whatever garbage micro$oft put on it.

I mean IDK maybe they mean the "freedom of Windows" compared to like, some bastardized Android sometimes found on third party "gaming handhelds"?

Lol

[-] Sabin10@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

If this means that an Xbox compatibility layer is coming to windows, I'm slightly interested.

[-] k1ck455kc@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 year ago

Unfortunately, it does not.

Im holding my breath hoping Xbox is smart enough to realize they need to merge their PC and Xbox game stores.... But the technical overhead required to do such a thing probably means they wont, even though theyre the only company that could pull it off.

Not pursuing this will mean the death of Xbox hardware, mark my words.

It's always fun when, during a work presentation to higher ups, the XBox Game Bar or its notification popup on screen from an errant key press.

[-] overload@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 year ago

Smart song and game choice.

[-] Buske@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Enjoy your extra 20% battery drain with windows.

[-] Blackmist@feddit.uk 4 points 1 year ago

Was more than 20%. Battery life was like 2.5 hours on Windows and about 7 on Linux (on an undemanding game)

Presumably Windows is pricking about in the background, and not letting it go into an energy saving mode.

lol.

lmao even.

[-] MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

.... Compared to what?

If you compare to MacOS, then yeah, maybe.
