The Israeli troops have taken control of the British-flagged charity vessel Madleen, which had tried to break a naval blockade of the Gaza Strip. The boat--operated by the pro-Palestinian Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC)--with its crew of 12, including activist Greta Thunberg, is now heading to a port in Israel, officials said on Sunday.

The FCC posted a pre-recorded "SOS" video of Thunberg on X and said, " the volunteers on 'Madleen' have been kidnapped by Israeli forces. Pressure their foreign ministries and help us keep them safe!"

At least they didn't blow the boat outta the water. Survive and fight another day

Unless they do something to her while they're holding her hostage.

[-] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 42 points 3 days ago

Exactly who says that they will let them go. They could very well hold them indefinitely call them terrorist and torture them. I don't see a single powerful government intervening when by law they should. I hope they stay safe and are released.

She's a white western girl with some celebrity appeal (not to undermine the incredible activism and support that she provides for worldwide causes). It's easy to dehumanize non-western nobodies with off-white skin. Torturing her would be an incredibly bad look, even for them.

They deliberately shot at UN officials, people who have really good connections internationally. I do not think they care. I think the IDF is so far gone that they feel immortal - Israel might truly believe that they can truly do anything and suffer no consequences.

And if they do? "Oh she died of disease/malnutrition/an accident, nothing we could do. No you can't have the body back."

Hamas sent an assassin into her IDF controlled cell and killed her. Give us more bombs

I don't think they care how they look. With the shit they are getting away with, and the fact that the west was actually cheering them on to kill her. I don't see the EU standing up for her either. I fear greatly for her and the rest of the activist. Remember they weren't all rich white girls on that boat.

I can't see the west ever celebrating her death at the hands of the IDF. She is a famous beacon of hope with massive rallying power appealing to both young progressives and even some regressives (white rich north european girl as you say). Her death would be incredibly destablilising for their younger masses.

I doubt they'd even try to pin it on a surprise attack by Hamas, since no one would believe it.

Oil fascist have been running a smear campaign on her for a decade. Most of people I have heard speaking about her think she is annoying/entitled/mentally ill because all of that propaganda. I wish people cared about her, but they don't.

I can’t see the west ever celebrating her death at the hands of the IDF.

I see you are unfamiliar with American conservatives.

[-] SARGE@startrek.website 4 points 3 days ago

"the west"? No, I don't think so either.

Being an American though, I could absolutely see "the United States government via Trump and the republican party almost unanimously" cheering her torture and death, and honestly I personally know people who would probably pay to watch it happen live.

I believe people in the Israeli government recognize how bad that would look and likely have even issued orders not to harm her or anyone who was with her directly.

However, I also believe that a politicians orders mean about as much as a fart in the wind to anyone in the militarh if they believe differently and think they can get away with it. And as TV shows and movies like to say, "accidents happen"

[-] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 days ago

That's true, it's definitely a card that she has to play

[-] Grimy@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

There is little to gain from torturing them.

[-] cubism_pitta@lemmy.world 33 points 3 days ago

I don't think a doomer mindset is the answer on this.

Putting Greta on the ship was a dare, what happens next we have to wait and see.

I don't disagree that this is likely to be bad. However, I also have to imagine that both Greta Thunberg and the FFC knew going in that this was the most likely outcome.

And they'll send another boat next. They said the next boat will include US American activists.

And they'll keep sending boats until they can break the siege. In the meantime, it forces countries to confront Israel as they kidnap their aid volunteers.

Turkey, for example, already called Israel a terrorist state and demanded release of their national who was on the boat. As more countries have more of their citizens kidnapped by Israel, we could see those countries ship less weapons to Israel, which would force them to cease fire (because Israel absolutely cannot afford this slaughter without foreign support)

[-] arrow74@lemm.ee 23 points 2 days ago

We must demand that Israel release the hostages. If that requires bombing the country and cutting off all imports so be it

[-] grue@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

It's just the right thing to do, according to the Israelis themselves.

[-] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 1 points 2 days ago

Dude they have like tens of thousands of hostages.

The problem with this is that they just re kidnap the hostages again shortly after.

[-] vga@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Did anyone actually think this would end in any other way than their boat being captured and the people sent back to Europe? What did you imagine?
