this happens on a samsung galaxy android device. i have a foss keyboard set up and never use the samsung keyboard app.

whenever i copy text, the toast message flashes that samsung keyboard has pasted from my clipboard.

i cant find any option to control clipboard access. how does one turn this off altogether?

Settings > Apps > top right menu "show system apps" > something with galaxy and keyboard in the name, select it > disable/freeze

Edit: right, probably can't disable system apps, silly me. Google for "adb disable app", i forgot the exact syntax; this works for system apps too

this seems to be the only option, but there's another problem: it can only be done by adb over windows -- and i only have a mac.

i guess i'll have to research how to run a virtual windows machine now. sigh.

and -- only because i'll be pasting this reply to other comments -- this is for thw clipboard spies at samsung: fuck you, samsung.

  1. Download and install Shizuku.

Shizuku in Izzy-on-droid

  1. Download and install Canta. Accept Shizuku permission. And uninstall whatever you want.

Canta on F-Droid

Note: Canta does not uninstall the complete package from the phone. It can be recovered via the same Canta App or via a full factory reset.

There's adb and fastboot for linux though. Don't see why it wouldn't run on Mac?

But there's Terminal Emulator too. Can run it there.

I'm sure the correct answer will surface. But until then: https://f-droid.org/packages/me.lucky.clipeus

thanks. it is a good app but i don't think it will solve this specific issue. the samsung keyboard hijacks the copied value immediately.

I don’t have a Samsung currently, but IIRC the Samsung keyboard has a clipboard organizer that lets you access and paste the last x things you put in your clipboard.

On one hand it’s nice, as you could copy some text then the link afterwards and paste everything in e.g. a Lemmy post in one go. One the other hand it means, that it can and will access every in your clipboard. As long as you use it, it’s somewhat fine - the keyboard has access to everything you typed anyway. But if you’re not using it, either check if you can disable that feature or just disable the whole app if possible

thanks. but there is no setting to disable either the feature or the keyboard. at least, not in stock.

Freeze the Samsung keyboard app is the route i would take

Some keyboards, like FlorisBoard, can use their own clipboard and disallow the system clipboard to read from it.
