Thomas "Tom" Jasper Cat, commonly referred to as Tom Cat, or more simply referred to as Tom, and originally known as Jasper, is one of the two anti-heroic protagonists in Tom and Jerry, alongside Jerry Mouse, created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Despite being referred as an anti-heroic, Tom is more often placed in the role of the antagonist, with Jerry often being the protagonist just as much.

Tom is a bluish-grey and white anthropomorphic domestic short haired tuxedo British cat who first appeared in the 1940 MGM animated short Puss Gets the Boot. The cat was known as Jasper during his debut in the short; however, beginning with his next appearance in The Midnight Snack he was known as Tom or Thomas.

Tom and Jerry cartoons

His name, "Tom Cat", is based on "tomcat", a word which refers to male cats. He is usually mute and rarely heard speaking with the exception of a few cartoons (such as 1943's The Lonesome Mouse, 1944's The Zoot Cat, 1947's Part Time Pal, 1953's Puppy Tale and 1992's Tom and Jerry: The Movie). His only notable vocal sounds outside of this are his various screams whenever he is subjected to panic or, more frequently, pain. He is continuously after Jerry Mouse, for whom he sets traps, many of which backfire and cause damage to him rather than Jerry. His trademark scream was provided by creator William Hanna. Hanna's recordings of Tom screaming were later used as a stock sound effect for other MGM cartoon characters, including a majority of Tex Avery's shorts.

Tom is usually defeated in the end (or very rarely, killed, like in Mouse Trouble, where he explodes), although there are some stories where he outwits and defeats Jerry. Besides Jerry, he also has trouble with other mouse or cat characters. One of them that appears frequently is Spike Bulldog. Spike regularly appears and usually assists Jerry and beats up Tom. Though in some occasions Tom beats him or he turns on Jerry (like his debut appearance in Dog Trouble). Usually when Tom is chasing Jerry after a bit Jerry turns the tables on Tom and beats him or uses an outside character such as Spike to beat Tom.

Tom has variously been portrayed as a house cat doing his job, and a victim of Jerry's blackmail attempts, sometimes within the same short. He is almost always called by his full name "Thomas" by Mammy Two Shoes. In 1961 short Switchin' Kitten Tom has a membership card as belong to the "International Brotherhood of Cats".

The line manager told me to do what I need to protect myself and that I am doing very well, the senior that oversees me told me that I can take 5 days/week and they will defend me against the middle manager since I do my work well.

Once the middle manager caught wind of my violation of RTO, I got chewed by the line manager for taking too many days when I haven't gotten ownership of my area yet, and when I confronted them about their previous words they told me they didn't mean that.

After that, I continued to ignore RTO but to a smaller extent because it's either testing my luck like that or quitting. I dunno if it is the autism or the anxiety but working in the office for more than 2 days/week leaves me a wreck that is unable to enjoy things.

I got chewed again last week by the middle manager themselves, with the line manager and the senior I mentioned as backup. Pretty much all of them played the bad cop role, telling me that my performance (they switched to what they really meant, my attendance after 5min since I actually perform above average) was not satisfactory anymore and that my remote privileges are completely revoked and that if I can't come to office I should take paid leave). The middle manager pretty much told me to leave if I didn't like that, even when I talked to him about providing the HR with a medical certificate about my health issues (mental health but like hell I am going to tell that to them and give them another reason to discriminate against me). The line manager and the senior, the ones who encouraged me to begin with just made me feel like shit and doubt myself about my supposedly "bad" performance.

I decided to leave after that, I can't stand that workplace anymore and I cannot fully RTO. I'm not sure if they soft fired me or if they are delusional enough to believe that I will somehow pull myself from my bootstraps and go there everyday (they are short on people due to RTO + one person being seriously sick and the workload will be doubled pretty much in the following months).

When talking one-to-one, the line manager mentioned that my work is great when I am there but I took too many leaves the past month. No shit, if I am burnt out from having to come to the office and having to work overtime sometimes, and having to cope with our customer's unreasonable demands, of course I will have to take some leaves and my performance will halt (I will admit this only for the past 8 days before the 2nd chewing up, due to the aforementioned burn out). I can't stand this duplicity from him and the senior (which I of course know is due to the pressure from their higher up).

I can't work there anymore. I pretty much lost my first job due to being autistic (I even tried getting accommodations through the company doctor which were revoked my the middle manager because everyone has issues so no-one should have accommodations [sic]). I don't know what to tell my parents. I don't know if I will be able to find the courage to job search again anytime soon. Capitalism is hell but if you are disabled its just another whole shitpile of suffering. How tf do I have to do this until I die

Hello Liberals ralsei-wave

I say the last 10 days have probably been the worst 2 weeks i had in like years, my dad had a health crisis and had to go to the hospital so i had to be alone in my home while i wait if he died or not

During those 4 days one of my cats died, there was no electricity, no water, and it rain a lot

Thankfully everything is currently ok now since my dad is out of the hospital (free thanks to universal healthcare, thanks sheinbaum) and now me and my mom have to watch him while he recovers

In another important news i started playing an old flash game i used to play as a kid.

Pokemon Tower defence, I never finished it or the 2nd one but i remember it being fun. Im playing a version with regional forms and its pretty fun i got an alolan vulpix and it destroys everything with icy wind so she and my ivysaur are going to be my main team, there is also a hisuan growlithe i want but i still havent caught it

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

cuddle for the sad news. That's a lot

[-] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

Thanks, thankfully everything is stable now so no more stress for me for now

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago

Im always really sad when I hear kitty died. Theyre the best things on earth.

[-] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

Gotta say I think Cruz is actually right on this issue - knowing multiple significant figures of population totals or demographics isn't an indicator of substantive knowledge about a country. live-tucker-reaction had his orders to humiliate him, was playing gotcha and Cruz knew it and wasn't playing along.

Honestly I'm not even convinced most population estimates are correct past the first significant figure anyways.

Im at a grad party for my friend I start to sober up a lil and I realize I’m mid-convo with a libertarian how the fuck did I opt into this this is why I don’t fucking drink much

[-] WhyEssEff@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

anyways I need to read more theory so that even drunk me can agitate it properly fucking fumbled

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

Drunk me would have immediately asked about their thoughts on age of consent laws. Drunk me doesn't give a shit. Sober me barely does

[-] AernaLingus@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

I'm listening to A Libertarian Walks Into a Bear (book about a failed libertarian utopian project in rural New Hampshire) and within minutes of introducing the town's "Founding Fathers" one is mentioned to have been convicted of possession of CP^[unfortunately overturned on appeal due to an unforced error by the prosecution classic] libertarian-approaching Can't wait to hear how this absolute trainwreck unfolds.

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

Is that a paid audiobook or can I find it around? Cause it seems like a fun listen but knowing the general concept not worth spending money on.

[-] AernaLingus@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

I think I paid for this one (I usually go with libro.fm or Downpour since they have DRM-free downloads, and you pay a flat rate per book by buying credits), but it's on MyAnonamouse and I did also find a public magnet link when doing a DHT search but I'm not sure if the torrent is still seeded. Definitely recommend MyAnonamouse, btw—it's a private tracker dedicated to ebooks and audiobooks, but it's much more low-key than basically any other private tracker and you don't need to show ratio proof from other private trackers or anything like that.

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago

A chill audiobook private tracker may be the best thing ever for me. Thanks! Im a star trek dork and there's tons of cast read audiobooks thar are hard to come by legit and also I like an audiobook. Its how I get most of my fiction books.

Worf appears on ds9 the station before he appears on ds9 the series. Forgot that.

Anyone else spend their lives with friends/acquaintances who were always more economically comfortable than you? I've always hated it.

[-] SuperZutsuki@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

Yes but I made them all into commies

[-] BanSwitch2Buyers@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago

I think one of them is trying to slowly ghost me out. Getting close to being friendless again since no one wants to give a fuck about an expanding list of obvious wrongs in the world.

Installed Mint on a thinkpad to mess around with. Any cool stuff I should put on it? I'll likely be using it as a portable workstation and movie device.

“We have a housing crisis” says the country where making housing is seen as a bizarre, alien thing.

The amount of weird internet comments I’ve seen on how living in an apartment is sooo unbecoming is staggering. Bro, demand to live in nyc is more than demand for rural ohio. Why do people get mixed up about this?

[-] LanyrdSkynrd@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago

"We need affordable housing" says person who opposes having low income housing built in their area

[-] BanSwitch2Buyers@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago

Housing shows, advertising, and consumerist lifestyles have rendered actual housing undesirable to these people. They want mcmansions, tiny homes, and condos.

[-] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

It then begs the question, how tf is apartment living the rich people option? Where is all the demand coming from?

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

Apartment fine, landlord bad.

Against all odds, I think I managed to unfuck my WSL1 Ubuntu install after the failed upgrade. I fixed the scary Python errors when running apt by pointing the Python symlinks back to the expected version instead of the new one (learned a new apt command for this one: update-alternatives) and copying a more specifically-named library file to apt_pkg.so. The other apt errors were taken care of by deleting a hook that was trying to use snapd (something WSL1 doesn't support), doing the ol' apt --fix-broken install, and then creating a mysterious file in /etc/apt/preferences.d so I could use apt dist-upgrade to downgrade all my packages back to the distro repository versions. StackOverflow, you are a merciful god.

I'm not super confident that it's not going to shit the bed at some point due to an introduced weakness or dependency issues this might've introduced, which is something I can only discover through future use, but at least it's not throwing errors constantly. This proves just how much I never want to nor should be allowed to be a sysadmin, jfc. Also, goddamn, was this ordeal not even remotely worth it for stubbornly trying to avoid using Docker to compile a piece of software I was mildly interested in that doesn't distribute precompiled binaries.

Finally got myself to try linux mint after my win 10 laptop and win 11 pc pushed copilot into my face this week.

All went well until I tried getting the gaming stuff to work. Even managed to install battle.net from Steam, but installed Diablo 3 and it runs like 1fps per 15 seconds. I have no idea what I am doing, I have zero understanding of any of this and I genuinely only need the game to work for one weekend as I no longer game much at all, but there is a lan thing I am going to.

Just venting. Mint runs beautifully on the old laptop that sounded like death with win 10.

I just got this tagline:

Lol I swear hexbear is a psyop designed to radicalise LGBTQ people and turn them against the moderate middle, thereby creating exactly the villain the gender/sexuality wedge issue calls for.

While reading about Soviet & Western Marxists who incorporate Spinoza as a predecessor to Marx's materialist dialectic, I also learned there were some Italian Marxists that did the same with Galileo, lmao.

Most average-looking people don't post their life on social media, and when they do, they don't get views unless they're doing something impressive.
