I just wanted to mention something that has been bothering me slightly. People keep referring to this instance as "db0" because it's quicker to type, but, well, that's just the username I've been using for the past 20+ years pirate captain hugging a treasure chest

Can I convince the m@tes to switch to calling it /0 for short if dbzer0 is too long for you?

Feel free to make any other suggestions here.

Sorry fam, db0 is too good as a shorthand.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown. Wear it proudly.

I usually use db0 because I'm not sure people I'm talking too will get "/0"

FYI you forgot to add the GenAI tag

Personally for me, the standard is this

dbzer0: instance

db0: you

/0 [governance]: communities

So I think it would be clashing in that case. Just my opinion.

Oh right. fixed

I think it's a non-issue, because from context everyone will know if the instance or you are meant.

Should've maybe called the instance something different entirely if you didn't want that problem :D

I'll never read /Foo as divide by foo haha. Too much time on the linuxes.

Unfortunately acronyms are a rather ingrained feature of English text communication, and db0 is how that falls out. Not sure you'll win this one.

If you changed the name to singularity or something, or undefined? Referring to the results of the operations you might get somewhere?

[-] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 months ago

I think people shorten it based on the domain name, so I doubt this would work.

How about renaming yourself "0" or something else non-conflicting?

[-] PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@lemmy.sdf.org 10 points 2 months ago

No because I'm an electrical engineer and I read it as Decibel 0 😆

[-] tenchiken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 months ago

How do we know this isn't a psyop, and secretly db0 accidentally was absorbed by the Horde and is now a sentient representation of dbzer0?

Until now I've let context do the heavy lifting, but will be more mindful of the split as requested.

Ironically I'd avoided using db0 about anything except literally you by name as to try avoiding needlessly pinging you in matrix.

[-] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 months ago

I don't see why the name should be different I mean Seinfeld is both the name of a show and the name of a person. I think it's fine the way it is :)

[-] altkey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 months ago

I got you DeeBee /0

[-] confusedwiseman@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago

I like the /0 as short reference but I also suggest we use it like the reference from the “old forums”.

Do you have stairs in your house?

It's early, that's \0 not /0

[-] krox@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago

I'm part of this crowd too, sorry 😅

I did, though, just recently do some hard-selling to some folks I care about, toward this instance (and Lemmy in general in some cases), as just a better place to hang out, a previously ~impossible-to-find "home" on the interwebz. My primary reason for doing that was your exemplary approach toward governance, and the way this place works as a result (I know that's not solely down to you, lol, relax!).

Your concern about this sounds like exactly the kind of refusal of authority (including your own) that makes this place lovely.

Like it or not, true leaders arise naturally, and are followed by those who like what they see. Entirely distinct from any hierarchical structure imposing "leadership" (authority).

I'm certain that you understand that far better than me.

db0 it is, then, for shorthand - but if you really hate that, I'll change my own budding habits 🤷‍♂️

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

How about I just refer to it as the result of dividing by zero and call it "ERROR?" :p

[-] idkman@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 2 months ago

You're thinking too hard. Chill.
