Yep first time! My partner wasn't in the mood for subs, so im trying to get her to give it a shot with me when I watch more later. I showed her your post as a gentle nudge.
But anyways yeah homie, the games are tense and im finding myself rooting for the characters even with as little backstory and character building. All the strategies with the cards and stars they go through has me going "OH SHITTTTT WHAT NEXT"

I promise that if you like restricted RPS, you'll love E-Card. But the bog in season 2 might be peak.
Kaiji's first season and a half is some of the best anime that there is imo. There author sometimes seems to not understand what makes his own writing great, because you'll come across a very Squid Games game pretty shortly that is way less interesting, but then they get right back to bangers.
The second half of the second season is also pretty funny, but I don't blame people for being bored out of their mind by it because he goes like five episodes without standing up from his chair.
Kaiji was one of the first animes I ever watched that wasn't about giant mecha or dragon's balls.
It's still one of my favourites.

Darn, for a second I thought you were going to tell me they were doing an anime adaptation of Ultimate Rock Paper Scissors (best manga)
You might also like "One outs" (baseball with gambling) and Akagi (Mahjong with gambling) and they feel quite similar but Kaiji feels more human like and not always on god mode like the characters in the other two, has a lot more games and it has a 
antagonist. Akagi though gets confusing really quick without a complete understanding of mahjong.
