It's a shakedown when the indie developer does it to the mega-corp

It's sensible shareholder-first business best practices when the mega-corp does it to the indie developer.

What "it" are you referring to here? What is the studio doing that is bad when the roles are reversed?

The article doesn't get into specifics, but all you have to do is look at the units sold for the consoles to understand why some companies might not bother with Xbox.

[-] misk@sopuli.xyz 4 points 5 days ago

„It” is probably a stab in the back, if companies were capable such things. Microsoft published their previous games as Xbox exclusives so it’s safe to assume some kind of relationship existed. Microsoft stabbed lots of their employees in the back recently.

[-] Minnels@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 days ago

Didn't they buy themselves free from Microsoft?

[-] misk@sopuli.xyz 2 points 5 days ago

Microsoft was their publisher only and their new game is being published by Take-Two.

Ah I can see that take, especially after reading the recent quotes from Zenimax employees about how the recent round of playoffs went too.

The CEO also said "we'll first support the platform that has the most users purely out of resource reasons". He later says he expects to support all platforms eventually. So as much as I love to hate on Microsoft, this seems like more of the cold calculations of business than a response to a perfcoved slight. Xbox simply is not an attractive platform for anyone not owned by Microsoft to prioritize right now.

I'm confused, has Microsoft lost favor with people? I was under the impression that the PS5 had no exclusives whereas Xbox was bending over backwards to get new storefronts and all these games on gamepass on launch day.

For the record I'm a PC Gamer, the only consoles I play are for Nintendo exclusives. So I am very much out of the loop on the situation.

It's true that the PS5 has basically no exclusives, but the PS5 also has over double the market share of Xbox. Plus, porting to Xbox is a huge lift since the hardware differences between the Series X and S is like making two ports. It sounds like this studio would rather focus on a single good port to reach as many players as possible before moving to other platforms.

Also, Microsoft definitely has been losing favor recently after mass layoffs (even for studios that have been successful like Virtuos) and multiple game cancellations like Perfect Dark (shuttered the whole studio) and Everwild. Zenimax supposedly had a game in early dev that Phil Spencer could barely put down, but the game was cancelled a few months later.

Some folks are now wondering what the point of them buying up all these studios has been, if they're just going to cancel their projects years later after giving a thumbs up the whole time. From what I've read, it seems like this has been more so Microsoft fucking over Xbox to divert resources towards investing in AI 🤮

A mystery for the ages, why does Microsoft buy so many gaming companies only to not use their IPs.

If I owned Microsoft, I'd go fucking crazy

"We're putting Sheogorath, Crash Bandicoot, Master Chief, Joanna Dark, and Corvus from Heretic into Heroes of the Storm. New Spyro, New Banjo Kazooie, New Jet Force Gemini, fuck it we own Activision right? When's the last time there was a Pitfall Harry game? Right now mother fucker! Wash it down with a bottle of Hexen 3! Maybe a new Battletoads that doesn't suck? Sorry about that reboot, that was a little cringe. But ya know what's not cringe? A Crash and Spyro crossover game that's actually a 3D Platformer and isn't a Skylanders game.. But those of you who like Skylanders? Skylanders HD Remasters; toys no longer required! Bowser and DK in the Switch versions"

Or at the very least put the ID Software games Activision owns onto Steam since Activision and ID are owned by the same comapny now (Heretic 2 and Wolfenstein (2009) are in danger of becoming lost media)

Like I never got that, there are ID Software (which is now part of Bethesda) games that aren't available because Activision owns them, but Bethesda and Activision are owned by the same guy now.

As far as I know, the PS5 had way more exclusives that the equivalent Xbox console. Sony just started releasing PC versions of many of those exclusives a couple of years after release because they like money, which took away their exclusive status. I see this as a good thing as exclusives aren't good for anyone other than the console maker.

[-] Baggie@lemmy.zip 5 points 5 days ago

It's still up in the air for now, but Microsoft has been shifting away from games for a bit now. It's looking like there may not be a dedicated Xbox console ever again, instead they look to be going down a different path with their recent announcement that "everything is an Xbox"

[-] EncryptKeeper@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

PS5 has plenty of console exclusives, they’ve just been porting them to PC after awhile which technically makes them no longer “exclusives”, even though the only console you can play them on are PlayStations.

[-] twinnie@feddit.uk 11 points 5 days ago

I feel like you’d have to be kinda mad to buy an Xbox over a PS5 this gen. PS is getting all sorts of new games and Xbox gets Halo 18.

[-] misk@sopuli.xyz 15 points 5 days ago

It’s the budget pick. Series S sells multiples of Series X and GamePass is cheap. We live in the age of overabundance of all kinds of media so there’s is crapload of games, and exclusive situation doesn’t look that bad compared to PS5, mostly because PS5 is bad too. I went with XSX because of the looks but that was before Microsoft went insane.

[-] Minnels@lemmy.zip 6 points 5 days ago

Sorry but... The design on the console was what made you choose one over the other?

I have both. The PlayStation 5 I keep hidden. That thing is too damned big and obnoxious.

[-] misk@sopuli.xyz 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

This thing goes into my living room and PS5 looks are just offensive to me. I waited to see if Sony would come to their senses with Slim or Pro but I guess Sony is back to being Sony when they don’t have to try. I despise monopolies so I go with the underdog when I can.

Both platforms run all modern games and there’s very little exclusives on both. Performance wise they’re the same and automatic VRR on everything is awesome. XSX was significantly cheaper at the time too and that’s before taking into account how much value GamePass provides. If Microsoft wasn’t exiting the market I’d say it’s a better choice today too.

[-] Minnels@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

I see you had more arguments. I was just baffled over what I read. I own neither and don't really follow what games are exclusives or not.

Happy it worked out for you :)

[-] Samskara@sh.itjust.works 5 points 5 days ago

Xbox has more great games than I could ever play. Series S is powerful enough to run games at 1080p just fine. Gamepass seals the deal.

[-] Pacattack57@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I bought my Xbox s for 200 new a few years back. Ps prices don’t get anywhere near that.

[-] DieserTypMatthias@lemmy.ml 6 points 5 days ago

The games from these consoles with come to Steam anyway.
