I've tried a few like kagi, ddg, brave, and so far yandex beats the pants off them and it's free unlike kagi. Just wondering if I should know of anything new.

Ya when I was to find a piracy streaming site, Yandex is the best. Fuck Google.

It's rich because anglos scream their heads off about China's internet being censored...when google is fucking censored to all hell and back.

does google still do the link at the bottom where you can see a list of sites removed from results over DMCA claims? it's very "what websites, where? ... so i can avoid them ;)"

[-] ButtBidet@hexbear.net 3 points 4 days ago

Last time I checked, you had to put in an email address to read them. And they still grouped a bunch of takedown requests together so it was hard to find exactly the video you're looking for. I remember a long time ago it was much easier.

God I just tried right now and even the links on the bottom aren't showing up.

hmm i don't remember having to give them an email, but i was probably signed into an account. i haven't used g-seach in a few years probably so absolute shocked-pikachu to hear it's worse.

It depends on the subject. For anything somewhat threatening to western capital, Yandex is king. But Google can be good if you're searching for stuff that a baby area tech nerd would also be interested in.

baby area

I know this is a typo and yet... knight-nod

Google is good for baby tech?

I’ve tried to use yandex in the past and it wasn’t as good as google or ddg at the time, has it improved or do you have to adjust how you search with it?

[-] Collatz_problem@hexbear.net 15 points 5 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

It didn't really improve, just Google search quality had taken a nosedive.

[-] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 7 points 5 days ago

I just search for whatever and it's usually showing me what I want. I bet you can tweak it even further.

that's good news, I'll check it out again then.

I was in this boat too, about a year ago i was not getting good results with yandex. But i tried it again recently and it seems to have improved a lot!

Do you need to run that off your pc or is there a website?

https://searx.space/

There are various instances you can choose from, and you can self-host it.

Also there are "redirectors" like https://searx.neocities.org/ and https://searloc.org/

These meta search engines use various search engines you can find in settings that may also help you find a single one you like. Sometimes using SearXNG can be difficult if you spam searches like me as the search engines start blocking you from results.

I noticed a lot of the instances have a limit on cookie size and if you change too many settings from default, the instance will return an error and will not be able to use all of them. I found opnxng.com to handle more settings changes (at least from what I have needed).

My favorite.

I still use SearXNG, occasionally DDG, but Yandex is pretty damn good!

I use startpage, it's been pretty good.

[-] EllenKelly@hexbear.net 3 points 4 days ago

Google and microsoft (therefore DDG via Bing) are on the BDS list

I almost exclusively use yandex atm but ill be checking other recomendations in this thread

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 4 points 5 days ago

I still need an alternative to Google that still lets me Google dork. Searx and Yandex don't seem to do the trick.

Since duckduckgo AI is now able to search I very rarely use any search engine myself.

DDG AI can certainly be helpful when you arrive at a deadlock (e.g. when stuck with a strange error while debugging a program), but I wouldn't trust use it in stead of search, both due to needlessly excessive resource usage and trustworthiness issues.

To each task its own tool.
