The suggestion was put forward during discussions between President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and his Russian counterparts, a source with insight into the U.S. National Security Council told the paper.

Witkoff, who also serves as the White House’s Middle East envoy, reportedly backs the suggestion, which the U.S. believes will solve the issue of the Ukrainian constitution prohibiting giving up territory without organizing a referendum. While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected any notion of ceding territory, the new occupation proposal may lead to a truce following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022.

According to the proposal, Ukraine’s borders would remain officially unchanged, similar to the borders of the West Bank, even as Israel controls the territory. “It’ll just be like Israel occupies the West Bank,” the source told The Times.

Smells like complete bullshit. First, this is basically one sided-Russia capitulation and betrayal of their line which was consistent for years. Second, there is no reason at this point for it, even three years ago the original terms were autonomy for the eastern oblasts, not some blazing fuse like this. Third, the weasel language of the aritcle is highly sus - not even said who exactly suggested this?

Possibly. Anonymous source does not led credibility. But it is a creative way to bypass the Ukrainian law and have Zelensky save face while in reality surrendering.

When it comes to Russia-Ukraine news whatever we read in media (Trump is going to ditch Ukraine and never give them any more weapons) versus what actually happens (Military Industrial Complex go brrr) is almost always contradictory. Still the sheer 'creativity' of this idea is what lends it the credibility to be possible. Not that anyone should take it as a fact.

but unlike the palestinians, the eastern ukrainians have a world power on their side who has proven will intervene to help them.

A deal like this isn't helping anyone.

The article also fails to mention who proposed this plan. Does the USA think Russia will behave as Israel?

You mean as a belligerent genocidier?

This is the consequence of letting Israel do whatever it wants, now other countries are adapting their policies to reflect the new normal.

Wonder if they’ll start with a “mandatory” state first?
