How much freedom does firefox have again? How long until they ban UBlock Origin?

IIRC, they banned it from Mozilla Addon Store quite some time ago. But it can still be easily sideloaded and once done, will be auto updated as well. It works on both desktop and mobile as well.

I think the controversial nature of the extension caused them to remove it from AMO.

Hypothetically, if one were to install something like a banned extension, where would one go to get it? Hypothetically, of course.

You can just use the filter list in your current ad blocker and avoid an additional extension all together. I've had BPC as a list in Adguard for ages, and it works flawlessly.

Sharing the link again since the person who shared the link is from an instance that doesn't federate with Beehaw: https://gitflic.ru/user/magnolia1234

You can still use it though, just like when google bans an app from the play store you can still get it elsewhere.

I sideloaded BPC and it was disabled for me; granted, I could re-enable it, but Mozilla decided to allow me to do that, and they easily could not have allowed it.

It's not banned. Even this notice says it can be re-enabled easily.
