New world order.

To repeat from the deleted thread: on CUSMA goods, because the US quietly dropped the same on their end a week ago.

I'll let people decide for themselves if that's pitchfork-worthy.

I think this is a mistake by Carney, Trump will just see it as Canadians being weak and double down and expand on his tariffs.

[-] GrindingGears@lemmy.ca 5 points 16 hours ago

I mean you are dealing with the absurd, so what's a win anyways? All for him to decide tomorrow it's a loss?

Country is ruled by an authoritarian warlord, you can't expect decency or rationality. If it was everyone's beloved PP in Carneys place, he'd still be getting his ass handed to him. Don't kid yourself.

DST backdown certainly didn't win anything. Coming right after phone call has some promise to be prelude to US backdown, but that better be what happens.

Carney the Capitulating Capitalist...

[-] puppinstuff@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 day ago

I’d like to think the consumer choice sentiment will stick around even if the price incentives to buy elsewhere do not. There are many, many reasons why people might find it morally inappropriate to pour money into the US economy.

[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 hours ago

I'd like to think that is part of Carney's calculation in this. If most of us aren't buying American stuff anyway, removing the tariff as a bargaining chip doesn't really change much in practical terms, but it's something that can be used to ask for something else in return

[-] wirebeads@lemmy.ca 22 points 1 day ago

Jesus Fuck Carney. I’m not happy with how you’re rolling over for Trump. So much for standing up for Canadians.

[-] ryper@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

We're only dropping counter-tariffs on items that comply with the CUSMA, which are also exempt from Trump's broad tariffs. That seems reasonable.

[-] Sunshine@piefed.ca 9 points 1 day ago

Boycott liberals and conservatives. They roll over easy for America.

[-] AlexLost@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Why give the new southern dictator concessions? Let's talk embargo instead?!

[-] Typhoon@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago

“We are working on something, we want to be very good to Canada,” Trump told reporters in the White House, adding that he likes Carney “a lot.”

Trump only likes people he can bully. Saying he like Carney "a lot" makes sense given how much he's backed down and fucked Canadians. "Elbows up"? Fuck off Carney. "Head down" is more like it.

[-] bowreality@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago

I think Carney is just smart. Trump liking him is good for us. We can still do our part. I am done with the USA and so are many Canadians. Our gov can play nice (called diplomacy) while we boycott the hell out of them. Win-win

[-] Typhoon@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago

We can boycott them on an individual level, but the real money is from industry buying massive quantities of things. They use them to make things and we never know where it came from. We don't need the tariffs to keep Canadian people from buying American. We need it to stop corporations from doing it.

[-] bowreality@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

Corporations won’t stop if they don’t want to. Why? They pass on the cost to the consumer anyways.

If we have to drop the tariffs on CUSMA products to have any chance that the USA isn’t dropping out I am good with that. CUSMA is a great deal in today’s world and unless the USA drops it it’ll be good until 2036. Let’s take that.

[-] Typhoon@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

Corporations won’t stop if they don’t want to. Why? They pass on the cost to the consumer anyways.

Correct, and then the consumers are less likely to buy them and will pick the ones that are made from non-tariffed materials.

The point of tariffs is to lower purchases from countries who are waging economic warfare on us, even when we can't directly see the source.

[-] bowreality@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago

Tariffs have never worked when broadly applied.

Btw here is a post with a clip from what Carney said: https://www.threads.com/@team_canada_forever/post/DNq05s-y7XE That’s exactly what I was mentioning in my earlier comment about CUSMA we have the best deal. Let’s stand down on the tariffs and not jeopardize that. We Canadians can still do a lot of harm to them and we have. The gov can’t stop us and the gov can’t be nailed for that in the negotiations.

[-] tleb@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago

Remember, the same reasons we're critical of Trump's tariffs (just hurts your own economy, ends up as just an extra tax on consumers) apply to our counter tariffs. I want to punish the US for their actions, but were the tariffs even helping us?

I think the rhetoric we're hearing from Trump is a sign that we're going to get a good deal. But I do think any "good" deal with Trump will be a net negative and it will be a long 4 years.

[-] GrindingGears@lemmy.ca 1 points 16 hours ago

And he might roll out of bed one morning at 3am and decide it's all over again. Hit the truth social with his one eye open, and that's that.

[-] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I don’t want to trade with the US at all, they can make tariffs on both sides 500% for all I care.

The economy won’t rebuild without the US unless we get rid of trading with the US.

As far as I’ll go is anyone transporting goods across the border should be found guilty of treason.
