I had never heard of him either.
I spent half a day wondering why anyone would want to kill the Black Mirror guy. And wtf was he doing in Utah?
Before the assassination, I just knew him as the tiny face chud with Turning Point USA who spewed insipid talking points to "own" the left.
If you've seen him before, it was probably in a meme like this.
I barely knew him as the guy that said fuck the kids and let them die when school shootings happened. Picked that up randomly in the periphery. I think he's from the Fox News idiocy, echo chamber space.
Funny enough I learned recently he was banned from fox News briefly for insulting one of the on air people
Being a non-American, zero clue. Seems he was more useful to the regime dead rather than alive.
Ditto. I only know about Charlie Kirk from the memes, and these memes don't paint him positively so I got the idea that he's a right wing nutjob, which is not wrong seeing as what he spouted when he was alive.
I would wager 90% of Americans had never heard of Charlie Kirk before his death. It's just this fucking regime is SO FUCKING ONLINE!
Just called it the other day, it's a reality TV show. That's why they acquire all the media outlets, the viewer rates are insane.
He's famous for creating a conservative organization while in college, called Turning Point USA. The org puts out a lot of smug memes to appeal to young conservative folks, so naturally people made fun of them and counter-memed.
He's said a lot of very vile things, like "Black women don't have the same kind of brain processing power" (paraphrased) when talking about how bad DEI is.
My BFF hadn't heard of him either, but they curate their feeds to be mostly uplifting fluff, and they aren't terminally online like I am lol. I was kind of surprised that he was the influencer that got shot though, I might have expected someone like Loomer or Fuentes
Never heard of the dude either. Didn't care, still don't.
I literally had no idea who he was until the campus videos of the shooting hit Lemmy. I'm in the US but don't regularly follow US media sources because gestures vaguely. Lemmy is also my only social media at this point, everything else has been deleted, so when something pops up here, I go digging through the Guardian or El Pais to get an idea of what's going on.
I will say, I had the absolute delight of taking all the wind out of my deeply religious and conservative coworkers sails by innocently asking, "who's Charlie Kirk?", when they were discussing a moment of silence idea and a poem one of them wrote about him. Of course I knew who he was at that point, but I enjoy being an agent of chaos in a small southern town lol (send help!).
a poem one of them wrote about him
what the actual fuck is wrong with people
Getting out of reddit and US centric socials/media does remove a lot of trash you don't need to know from the feed. You can't avoid some, when they get through, and filters don't catch them, but it's significantly better.
Lemmy and Mastodon FTW.
He was pretty irrelevant outside of online spaces and campus events. If you've never heard of him before it just means you aren't terminally online, which is a good thing.
He was a ghoul and you're right to not feel bad about him dying. Rot in piss, bozo.
I'd heard his name but had no idea who he was.
I looked him up and was like "I gotta join in the pile-on"
Really, I'm here for the spectacle and it's too rich that this dude spouting gun nut nonsense took a shot to his neck. I don't care if he lived or died, I don't celebrate gun violence, I wish I lived in a different kind of society. But I don't, so I'm gonna laugh
And I'm laughing even harder when conservatives clutch their pearls and demand that feel bad. Choke on my indifference, you fucking phony chuds
He used to be one of those guys that breadtube dunked on a lot, but he wasn't as big as Shapiro or Crowder. People used to edit his face small, and make fun of him. He had a few million youtuber subscribers, but a few million less than the other big names on conservative youtube. For context, the largest communist channel on youtube is Second Thought with 1.8 million subscribers, he had more than double that.
Unfortunately I knew. I don't know how you didn't. I'm jealous.
I also didn't know. I hadn't even heard Ben Shapiro's voice until like a year or two ago. I don't get how people who aren't interested in that Far Right Wing stuff end up being exposed to that nonsense.
Most I knew was he was an annoying rightwinger which is enough to get on my "follow your leader" list. Once I saw the small face memes I remembered a bit, but was just happy one of these people was gone that apparently had a lot of pull online.
Only know him from the Jubilee videos where that have guests on and sit in a circle of 20 people with a different view point than the one in the middle.
He came off as the shamelessly smarmy, creepy, dishonest, and that first impression never got any better any of the few times his videos came up in my feed.
Whomever shot him has made the world a better place. Fuck Charlie Kirk and everyone like him
I didn't knew him until death. I am not from west
If you weren't fairly online and/or in fringe left-wing or right-wing spaces, you probably wouldn't have heard about him because he wasn't really that important. Most of my coworkers (and this is in the US) had never heard of him before his neck just did that.
I never had, but after being told I figured out that he was that meme face.
Be thankful that you're not online enough to know him. Enjoy the beautiful outside!
I had seen his face before, that was about it. He died, i looked up his Wikipedia, not sad about it.
I saw him in a debate once. Thought he was clever at using fallacies, but an incredibly stupid, hateful, insufferable know-it-all (who didn't know that much)... So never gave him any attention.
I heard of him, but never thought he was this damn important. And this is why the censorship campaign is so frustrating to me. For anyone who hasn't heard of him, he was not "doing politics the right way".
Charlie Kirk was a bigot.
Charlie Kirk was a bigot. Charlie Kirk was a bigot. Charlie Kirk was a bigot.
All the firings and censorship and hand-wringing about "lowering the temperature" do not change this simple fact.
Charlie Kirk was a bigot.
Nope. In hindsight I think I saw some older clips of debating on college campuses - but I kind of just assumed that was the usual evangelist on a megaphone that I had taken to be normal for every campus.
Anyone who thinks Charlie Kirk was just some nice Christian who loved the First Amendment needs to get MUCH better sources of information than they currently have.
Yeah, I believe I watched a video or snippet of his or Steven Crowder and stopped. You can tell that they edit all the good arguments out and only publicize online the ones where they get destroyed in.
Also has that ingenious tactic of speaking loud, proud, and stopping the other person so that the other person can't even get their point across.
The only defense against stuff like this is not engaging at all. These people set up a stand on sidewalks and school campuses hoping to get some good content, and these people just line up for him
I was well aware of him but I hadn't heard anything about him in a long time. The right-lib/subtle fascist niche seems to have really died off over the last few years, in favor of more overtly fascist commentators mainly
I had no idea. Turns out if heard of him a couple times but he was not relevant enough to remember. He was just another bootlicking sycophant and quite frankly I laughed out loud when I heard a conservative advocate for 2nd amendment rights had been shot. After reading through his history of opinions I just wish I'd had the opportunity to laugh harder. I'm not really political as an accelerationist, but it is pretty fucking funny, and the pearl clutching from all the big talking conservatives is simply priceless.
I knew who he was, but just grouped him together with all the other manosphere shitspinners.
I learned about him from South Park, just trying to make his nut
I knew him after he dressed up in kink gear a decade ago to "own the libs"(?) on some college campus, and his second in command got catastrophically drunk, passed out, and shit her pants like a horse at a college party that same year. I assumed they never recovered from the double bout of extraordinary cringe, but apparently they did?
Apparently I've been living under a rock, or the guy was deep underground.
i knew he existed but i didn't know he was actually relevant. i thought he was just, like, an annoying guy
I had seen his face on Rick & Morty before. That's it I had no idea the hate he peddled or anything
I'd only heard of him in the sense of him being one of a flock of fascist wastes of oxygen who grifted around the country spewing hate and violence and making people's lives worse and more dangerous. He was a name on a list of scum who we'd be better off with them never having been born.
All I've learned about him since is that I was fucking right. Having him not exist anymore is a net gain in the long term but he's still pissing me off for now by the fact that I'm wasting my fucking time and my fucking attention and my fucking blood pressure on his fucking bullshit even more than I was.
He can fucking rot with Rush Limbaugh and Joseph Goebbels and the rest of their fucking detestable cabal of fucking filth. If I never hear his fucking name again it'll be too fucking soon and the universe still owes me my fucking time back from every moment I've wasted having to fucking be exposed to this shit.
Never heard of him before. Now I've learned that he seemed like a really horrible person...
