Oh it’s even worse than that: they hate live action Ariel because she's “ugly”

sex+race racism is horrifically nasty, yet more common and more “accepted” in my experience.

Also, I will leave this here:

Fortunately, it’s just hypothetical, that live action doesn’t actually exist…

[-] dharmacurious@slrpnk.net 9 points 1 week ago

I'm sure I'm missing something super obvious, but can you explain the image?

[-] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 51 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

The big panel is a bit clearer:

Basically the original heroes were vaguely Tibetan (Aang) or dark-skinned Inuit, but for the movie (that doesn't exist) they quite consistently color coded the good guys as white and the bad guys as darker skinned; the total opposite.

Compare the skin tones of the actors they cast for the live action compared to the original anime

Casting a brown skinned woman as Snow White will never not be silly.

It's similar to Jack Reacher, it's made very clear in the books he's a tall, physically intimidating person. And they cast Tom Cruise to play him.

"Uh Mr Drake"

[-] wheezy@lemmy.ml 25 points 1 week ago

Would be better if they actually made new movies with different cultures stories instead of just remaking the old shit too.

They do this outrage bait on purpose though. American society is brain rotted and we need a cause to support or hate. Even in children's movies.

it's even worse than that cos the original text never said ariel's human version race, they just assumed it lol.

and before anyone says yes but its written by a dane, my response is yes but it's a fairy tale, anything is possible. why assume and then get angry based on your assumption?

[-] Carl@hexbear.net 17 points 1 week ago

historically accurate Ariel where she's just a dolphin

what slurs were used in her description?

I get the point of the meme and all that, but that whole thing about calling out Scarlet Witch for being played by someone that’s white is kinda troublesome to me.

Wanda’s dad is Magneto, a Jewish white guy. Her mom isn’t mentioned much but she’s Romani, which is its own ethnicity; and ethnicity is not a skin tone.

[-] lepinkainen@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago

Americans are the only ones who regularly equate skin colour with ethnicity.

[-] zarathustrad@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

Yea, many other cultures associate it with wealth/class. They are so much smarter.

Yeah Romani in Western Europe are often white passing or straight up white, and mircrakagovia or wherever they are from is quite obviously an eastern Europe analogue.

Scarlet witch is probably white, maybe a bit swarthy

It's old rage bait sir but it checks out

[-] sentient_loom@sh.itjust.works 29 points 1 week ago

People definitely made fun of Johnny Depp as a native American.

[-] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 11 points 1 week ago

Made fun of, yes, but there was no outrage, calls for boycotts, etc.

[-] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 week ago

I remember both of those, in addition to the ridicule. Just wasn't as loud.

I remember having an argument about the little mermaid movie years ago; the guy was complaining that a black lady was cast and I had to ask: "what do you care? You're not gonna watch it"; he looked stunned for a second and then said "yeah but still....", to which I had to reiterate "WHAT DO YOU CARE? YOU'RE NOT GONNA WATCH IT!"

Like why are grown men complaining about it at all?! We're not the target demographic!

[-] Shanmugha@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago

Me looking at Idris Elba as Heimdall: damn good, give me more

[-] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

Idris is my man-crush. I wanted him to be Bond

Can we please stop calling them "African American??" Nobody likes that. Not even black people like saying or being called "African American," for several reasons.

[-] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

Latinx has entered the chat

[-] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 week ago

I am white but I sit on a board of directors for a majority-black arts org, the founder who is a black woman uses the term African-American.

Not wanting to speak for anyone, but it's probably a mix of your age, social class, background, culture and context that may affect that choice.

[-] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

Sure, but reason still stands that not all black people identify with Africa, and also not all black people are American.

I seem to recall some anger about the Ancient One casting.

[-] XiaCobolt@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

They were like we wanted to swap the gender but we’re worried a strong Asian lady would be too Dragon Lady Stereotype. Like fuck off and cast Michelle Yeoh, she would have nailed it.

They also wanted to cut Wong, like WTF? Though ultimately making him a peer/equal instead of a servant was a great change.

There were plenty of people mad about most of those.

[-] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 week ago

If copyright didn't last forever, anyone could make a little mermaid movie with the main character as whatever race they prefer. Its been 35 years, time to release this into the public domain.

Nah i'm upset at all of em, either cast the actual race of the character or you are too cheap to put in the effort.

[-] Dragonstaff@leminal.space 7 points 1 week ago

I don't know how to break this to you, but mermaids don't exist.

Marvel were big on Romani character = witch in the 70s and 80s.

[-] Broadfern@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

How dare they cast the role of Caribbean princess as a young black girl? /s

(I know the stories are Danish or something but Disney put these films in tropical island settings)

[-] makeshiftreaper@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

If they didn't have double standards then they wouldn't have them at all

[-] Riffraffintheroom@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago

Ras al ghul is Arabic/chinese

[-] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago

Guessing they couldn't think of a way of finagling Russian in there too
