Not a car guy but IIRC, Subaru vehicles used 2G SIMs and were programmed to establish signal even when the car is off. You can imagine what happens when there are no 2G satellites to connect to

Yes, it will try to find a satellite that doesn't exist every 60 seconds, draining the battery. My mom has one of the affected models and got two battery replacements in one year before they "figured it out" and disabled the modem
I think it was related to OnStar or something. Whatever service it was for, she wasn't even subscribed
thats a bit scary. I have a dodge and now im wondering if onstar was a thing with that.
Mine doesn't have that capability... battery lasts 5 years. But the cost difference in charging an EV at home versus buying gas... that's real.
