Random article about Chicago, but this news has been all over my feeds. Reeks of union busting to me. They closed one of the six-in-the-world Reserve Roasteries, the one in Seattle, overnight. Workers got dressed before the crack of dawn to find their workplace boarded up with a sign on the door. The night shift was sent home early for “building maintenance” which was just time to board up the place.

It hasn't all hit the news yet, but they also laid off almost all the licensed store District and Regional Managers overnight.

There's a few factors that you will probably not hear discussed. The Palestine-related boycotts were way more effective than they will admit to. Also, Starbucks already lost to Luckin Coffee in China, which recently came to the US and is already reviewing way better by New Yorkers.

Luckin is also like half the price of Starbucks with all the app coupons

what % of stores unionized?

[-] quarrk@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago

No idea on numbers.

According to reddit about 1/3 of closures are union stores

Other coffee shops will take the pie from Starbucks

They're not here that long on this side of the Atlantic, I think the first store opened about 20+ years ago. They're full, but people get sick of it fairly quick. People (in my area) are going back to traditional coffee shops. The gawpy bright Starbucks in a paper cup and crap coffee are definitely on the way out.

They can kindly close all of them and go out of business.
