Rush by west to back Israel erodes developing countries’ support for Ukraine (archived)

Western support for Israel’s assault on Gaza has poisoned efforts to build consensus with significant developing countries on condemning Russia’s war against Ukraine, officials and diplomats have warned.

That had eroded efforts since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine to build consensus with leading states in the so-called Global South — such as India, Brazil and South Africa — on the need to uphold a global rules-based order, said more than a dozen western officials.

“What New Delhi, Jakarta and Brasília want to see is a common position on these issues, and consistency. And if they don’t see that . . . then on the major global issues there’s a certain danger EU, G7, Nato will not be taken seriously,” said Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, former Nato secretary-general.

Russia’s proposed UN Security Council resolution garnered support from only four countries — China, the United Arab Emirates, Mozambique and Gabon — but many western diplomats worry that an amended Russian resolution could gain the nine votes required to pass. The US, UK or France might then veto it, handing Moscow a propaganda victory.

“We have to prevent Russia . . . supported by the Chinese . . . taking the initiative to use this against us,” said a senior western diplomat. “There’s a risk that at the next vote in the [UN] General Assembly on supporting Ukraine, we’ll see a big explosion in the number of abstentions.”

“Russia has a huge stake in prolonging this conflict, given the distraction value . . . and the use in shifting the global narrative,” said one western foreign minister.

US President Joe Biden in an address in Tel Aviv on Wednesday lamented the loss of life during the October 7 attacks in Israel by Hamas. But he also cautioned Israelis that while they may feel rage, they should not be consumed by it.

"I caution this. While you feel that rage, don't be consumed by it. After 9/11, we were enraged in the United States. While we sought justice and got justice, we also made mistakes," he said.

Wartime decisions are "never clear or easy," he said.

"There's always cost. But it requires being deliberate. It requires asking very hard questions. It requires clarity about the objectives and an honest assessment about whether the path you're on will achieve those objectives," he added.

Biden also stressed that the "majority" of Palestinians are not with Hamas.

"The vast majority of Palestinians are not Hamas. Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people," he said.

"Hamas uses innocents, innocent families in Gaza as human shields, putting their command centers, their weapons and the communications tunnels in residential areas. The Palestinian people are suffering greatly as well," he added.

He also remarked on Tuesday's hospital blast in Gaza City, saying, "We mourn the loss of innocent Palestinian lives like the entire world."

The deal includes the 2 Social Democratic parties SMER-SD and HLAS-SD which as you may remember supported lowering Slovakian commitments to Ukraine and opposed the current western consensus on the war.
