To be fair, they did get some pretty decent damage in on their surprise round. They just didn't get many more chances.

Why are they resting with bugbears?

[-] snooggums@kbin.social 12 points 1 year ago

Bugbears love to hide under beds.

Or sleeping bags if the PCs are camping.

Ah, of course. Hence the popular goodnight, "don't let the bugbears bite!"

[-] snooggums@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

That is fantastic!

Those damned bedbugbears

[-] FaceDeer@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

They needed a hard fight because they've gained so many bugbear allies.

Three bears? Where did the bugs go? (checks notes)

5 level 3+ characters vs 3 CR 1 bugbears and a handful of CR 1/4 goblins.

That is a trivial encounter. Of course you wrecked them.

On their int the bears stand up, put on hats, pull out canes, and dance off stage left

If I were a player in this game I actually would be worried. The DM doesn't seem to have a clue how to make a balanced encounter and after this is likely to just look up random Monster Manual entries of a CR six levels higher than the party or throw so many weak ones at the party that the action economy makes it impossible to survive.

You comment does assume a bit of context. They might be a new DM just learning how to do stuff, in which case it's perfect fine to not be perfect every session.

Heck, it's perfectly fine to not be perfect even for experienced DMs. The most important thing is that whatever happens both the players and the DM learned something.

Getting an encounter perfect is pretty difficult to be fair, especially when the dice can completely wreck either side at whim.

One of my first times as a DM, I had the gang walking through a desert and wind up at an oasis.

They had their first mini boss there, a bunch on angry, hungry talon and fang equipped ostriches.

I'm getting ready to kick their ass as they were mine, and 1 of the guys pulls out 6!!!! Loaves of bread and starts feeding the fuckers.

No-one was happy with him.....

Give 'em hobgoblins; if I recall correctly, those guys have like 18 ac and teamwork abilities. They're also really low CR; my brother's party faced a group of them and could barely hit them. Cheap for sure, but a guaranteed difficult encounter.
