AT&T. We recently had an issue where our internet stopped working properly. My mom had to call them four times before they actually fixed our internet. The first time, she was put on hold for about 40 minutes before either the call ended itself or they hung up. The second time, she actually got through to someone but they didn't fix our internet and instead told us that our current internet package would soon be phased out and then spent about half an hour basically forcing her to getting something called "AT&T Air".

The third time she called, my mom told them that she didn't want AT&T Air and that if she can't use the package we have now, then we'll be switching ISPs. The woman on the phone said that she'll cancel the new package and put her on hold for about half an hour but she never did actually cancel the package or fix our internet, and she also never returned so my mom just hung up on her. The fourth time she called, the guy on the phone ran a diagnosis on our internet and finally fixed it within a few minutes. We have no idea why it took so long for them to do this but we're glad to finally have working internet.

But even though we do now have working internet, we are still thinking about switching ISPs. Even though they did send the equipment to use AT&T Air, we are not going to use it and we are going to send it back and try to get them to actually cancel the package. We aren't sure exactly when we are going to switch ISPs but my mom stated she wants to wait until after the holidays to do so, which probably means no sooner than January.

not sure how it works at ATT but usually for ISPs they contract multiple call centers for support.

it sounds like the first three times were to the same call center vendor and the fourth was to an actual ATT company support center. this routing happens randomly or based on time of day (Tod).

these vendors have incentives to collect the most calls, and resolve them as quickly as possible. they also have a hidden incentive to convert as many support calls to sales calls.

a "completed call" is one where the caller ends the call after a goal has been achieved. this means if you hang up before the goal is achieved it's not counted against the vendor and shows as a "disconnect" even if you were on hold for six hours. many operators will identify what you want, deem you as a nuisance, and place you on hold long enough to get you to hang up and make you someone else's problem. they have the incentive to convert you to sales and get paid a bonus for these sales.

it seems like your mother was handled by a veteran contract operator that upsells and dumps.

next time, tell them you want to speak to someone in cancelations and you will be transferred to someone inside the ATT customer service center. from there you can get transferred to an operator that actually works for ATT.

At the moment, everything.

This time last year, I was meant to be buying my own apartment and finally moving out from my parents' home. Then I got laid off, spent seven months struggling to find work and then landed a temporary purchase ledger job which I fucking hate. Partially because the commute takes me about 2 hours each way, partially because I work an 8-5 shift and have to get up at stupid o'clock in the morning on office days, and partially because we use Oracle Fusion which is the biggest crock of shit I've ever used.

Unfortunately that means I have to live with my parents for even longer. Renting somewhere is out of the question because Bristol is the second-most expensive British city to live in, and I basically can't get a mortgage without a full time job.

Sometimes I question why I chose to pivot towards accounting. I have a History degree, I'm fully AAT qualified and I'm halfway through my ACCA and I'm earning £13.50 an hour, or just £1.29 above minimum wage on a zero-hours contract. I can genuinely earn nearly as much from stacking shelves, flipping burgers or pouring pints, not that there's really many hospitality or retail jobs available. Office days genuinely take 13 hours out of my day. 8 of these are working, 4 of these are the commute and 1 is the lunch break I get.

My future is uncertain and I feel like there's no point in bothering. Best-case scenario, AI is truly a bubble that's going to burst, crash the stock market and leave us in a recession. At worst, it takes all our jobs and the rich leave us to starve.

Despite a brief relationship with a woman who finally popped my cherry (we're still really close friends and I'm grateful she took my virginity), my love life is practically nonexistent. Online dating is an absolute void where I only seem to match with GPS-spoofing South-East Asian and African women either pulling love scams or trying to find a Western spouse and the means to a green card. Two ladies messed around with my feelings and led me on big time this year and that's left me exhausted.

I have a lipoma on my neck which is going to cost me a lot to remove, and good luck actually finding the time to get the consultation and surgery/liposuction booked. The NHS won't do it because it's not cancerous, even though this thing has grown to the point where it's 5.5cm in diameter and sticks out like a sore thumb.

Time to leave America, if that's where you are. Really. Come to anywhere else eastward, just across the pond. We gotchu. Work, women, healthcare. Maybe take care of the last and first one first, then the second will come trailing.

That we as a society just accepted that cigarette butts aren't garbage. It's something smokers are allowed to toss everywhere because they can't be bothered.

Americans putting their thanksgiving in November.

WTF is wrong with you guys. It's 4 weeks to Christmas, you need to spread your food based holidays out better.

Easter, Independence Day, then fucking nothing until bam, Thanksgiving and Christmas back to back.

I don't want to hear about Labour day being a feast, it's a day off work to celebrate working. Stupid fucking holiday.

[-] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

Labor Day isn't about celebrating work, it's about appreciating the gains organized labor has made for working people.

[-] BlameThePeacock@lemmy.ca 0 points 5 months ago

Union employment has dropped off a cliff the last few decades, we won't be celebrating it much longer.

I hate when you go to tie something down in a truck and the tie downs you have suck so they aren't the right length and you have to awkwardly tie them to the hitch and then you do a terrible job anyway

I hate when people don't know how to act in a restaurant. I can tolerate it in tourists from abroad, that's excusable ignorance. But by the stars, some people never left the five hundred mile radius of where they were born and still never learned basic things like "don't treat service staff like trained animals" or "don't say you're ready to order until you know what you want" or "wait for a host or other staff to seat you instead of sitting down at the only dirty table and then complaining that you don't have a menu and your table is dirty" or "the number of people in your party includes all people, not just adults" or "you can't just order things from random people walking by".

Ugh.

Every single person now thinks they're smarter than everyone else. No matter what their political leanings are, they're all smarter than everyone else. Smarter than:

  • Doctors
  • Scientists
  • Engineers
  • Economists

It's absolutely ridiculous and it started sometime around the 90s around when Ross Perot first ran for president and it just got worse with social media.

That's the real problem right now. Everyone thinks they know more than people who spent decades studying and becoming experts in their field.

Just people in general who are unaware of how their actions affect others negatively, in any and all aspects of life. Especially when out in public, of course. At the grocery store, at the mall, in the parking lot, while driving, when talking, when online, every goddamn thing.

There are countless small things that are simple to avoid yet cause significant inconvenience to others. Or on the flip side, simple things to do, that would mean very much to another person.

Just think about your surroundings, treat everyone with kindness, respect, and give them the benefit of the doubt. Be welcoming. That's what makes/would make the world go around, and a nice place to live in.

But people live in their goddamn individualism bubbles and are completely oblivious. Sometimes people will be walking towards me in the street, perhaps two or three people side by side. And they'll fucking walk straight at me and I'll have to literally stop in my tracks to avoid colliding with them. Literally a few feet apart will they realize we will collide unless they change their trajectory. Mind you they won't apologize or realize they inconvenienced me. No. No, they'll just realize that they need to swerve unless they want to collide. And I know they see me from afar, because sometimes we'll even have eye contact and shit. Idiots.

People, man. Why it gotta be this way. 🤌

So you're telling me, I could just live a normal life, but a part of my brain is getting rebellious and won't cooperate, spreading negativity propaganda to the rest of my brain?

What. The. Fuck?!?
