"Canadian SNL"? Next they'll be calling Ed the Sock the Canadian Triumph the Insult Comic Dog

[-] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 75 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

This Hour Has 22 Minutes is not "Canadian SNL"

[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 21 points 2 days ago

Just another example of Americans not having any clues about anything outside their borders and not even caring enough to bother to find out either.

[-] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Bro, I've never even heard of this website. Way to baselessly generalize every American, even those that might otherwise align with you.

[-] psycotica0@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

It's not a website, it's a TV show that's been on the air since 1993 (~32 years)

[-] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 2 days ago

It's much better than SNL.

[-] observantTrapezium@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 days ago

Clicked this post to say just that

[-] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 5 points 2 days ago

I used to call Boys in the Hall Canadian SNL.

Hey, I’m old. I gots the memory problems.

Seriously though, it’s been about 30 years since I’ve seen it.

[-] LeFantome@programming.dev 4 points 1 day ago

Kids in the Hall kind of replaced SCTV which was meant to compete with SNL.

Different formats though.

right??? how dare they insult Anglo Infoman like this /j

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago

to bad. I would look up and try to watch this show if is was a canadian sketch commedy show.

[-] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

Didn't know about this show and I just subbed with Jellyseer. Being from the US I hate US TV.

[-] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

It can be hot or miss, but if you’re into Canadian politics it’s been very hit this year.

[-] rebelsimile@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Are you saying Trent McClellan’s dead on Greg Fergus impression isn’t gonna play well in the states?

[-] buffing_lecturer@leminal.space 1 points 2 days ago

How would you describe it?

[-] aarch0x40@piefed.social 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

It's closer to The Daily Show.

[-] hume_lemmy@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

I'd say more like a slightly political Carol Burnett show.

[-] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

"The Onion" in video form.

It is right in the name, “This Hour Has 22 Minutes” is a comedic parody of 60 Minutes and shows like it.

I asked my Chinese AI and it offered this:

This Hour Has 22 Minutes

Mock newsmagazine; sharp, focused, satirical. Cynical, biting, "gotcha" journalism parody. Mostly pre-taped and tightly edited.

Saturday Night Live

Live variety show; broad, chaotic, character-driven. Silly, absurd, celebratory, sometimes clumsy.

[-] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 day ago

I honestly fucking hate this trend. If I wanted to know what an LLM would say about something, I would ask it myself. Shit like this is not a substitute for human interaction.

[-] tomenzgg@midwest.social 4 points 1 day ago

Also, you couldn't pay me to publicly advertise that my ability to look up information had so completely atrophied.

[-] TheJesusaurus@sh.itjust.works 48 points 2 days ago

Calling 22 minutes Canadian SNL is so fucking lazy. One is a live variety show and the other is pre filmed satirical news.

If anything 22 minutes is Canadian Colbert/John Steward

Also, we claim SNL as Canadian already anyway

[-] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 day ago

Honey, we have the Daily Show at home.

The Daily Show at home:

John Steward

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

It's like a Canadian Monty Python's Circus.

[-] CanadaPlus@futurology.today 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Aren't those studio interview heavy, though? SNL is where I'd go to explain 22 to a foreigner, even though the live broadcast gimmick isn't there. They do do on-location interviews sometimes, I guess...

[-] TheJesusaurus@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

I dunno 22 minutes is cut and dry satire. SNL is a variety show, sure they dip their toe into pop politics but it's primarily about entertainment/comedy

The difference between Colbert and 22 minutes is one is more of an ensemble and the other is held down primarily by an Individual. There's a talk show element to Stuart/Colbert that isn't there for 22 minutes either

[-] LeFantome@programming.dev 21 points 1 day ago

Let’s see….

SNL was co-created by Canadian Lorne Michaels.

It grew popular due to the comedy talent of Canadians like Dan Aykroyd, Martin Short, Mike Myers, and others.

Saturday Night Live is the Canadian SNL.

[-] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 day ago

Canadian SNL? WTF is this bullshit?

[-] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago

Oh, headlines aren't allowed to name things anymore. It's part of the Darmok accord.

[-] HertzDentalBar@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 2 days ago

I'm offended eh. It's not even the same fucking format. Lazy fucking assholes

[-] mika_mika@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

I have never heard of this show, nor am I Canadian, but I am offended for you.

I was told they would be watching...

[-] CanadaPlus@futurology.today 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I really love the cover. Maybe it's because it manages to be cute while still referencing an appalling, inappropriate moment.

Mark Critch has it nailed.
