(And I use "Free" loosely because I do pay for Prime Video, so it went from paid to much more expensive)

Ten years ago my position on piracy was broadly, "do it if you want, but don't act like you're justified or ethical".

Now I'm convinced piracy is more ethical than feeding these monsters.

I also don't consider it a change in my own values. It's a change in how fucking awful and in need of dismantling the Corporation has got.

Wait, you pay for Amazon prime and you have to pay for the show?? Why on earth...

[-] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago

They also show ads unless you pay more than the prime membership.

I haven't opened prime since that day.

[-] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 2 points 4 months ago

Man, that's not ok

The Amazon Prime model is the scummiest. At least Netflix doesn't bait you into a subscription just to then tell you actually the show you wanted to see costs even more.

[-] nogooduser@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

To play devil’s advocate:

The Netflix equivalent of this is that the show just disappears (the Marvel shows) or you get the first seasons and not the last or even the last and not the first (at one time Prime had part of Lucifer and Netflix had the rest).

The only reason that it went from free to paid (instead of just disappearing) is that they lost the licence for streaming it under Prime Video but they didn’t lose the licence for selling it.

[-] Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 months ago

I doesn't really make a difference whether it was the actual platform or a higher decision; the end result is pissed off fans that turn to piracy instead of giving you money. Then those fans give you even less in the future. There will always be some that just say 'fuck it' and pay up, but it's diminishing returns.

This bullshit is exactly how pirates are born.

[-] BorgDrone@feddit.nl 2 points 4 months ago

Why do they even have limited time licenses? This doesn’t happen for music streaming services.

The wind is calling you out to sea, matey.

[-] PearOfJudes@lemmy.ml 11 points 4 months ago

Cancel all subscriptions which are just "We own the copyright to music, tv, movies etc" and find your digital art through simple file sharing networks on the internet. FOR EXAMPLE:

Stremio + Torrentio + Real Debrid (If you don't want to pay for real debrid it still works just can be a bit slower) A torrent streaming solution for most/all tv shows and movies. Soulseek, a file sharing platform mostly for music. I have yet to find a decent lossless streaming solution.

If you want games, Ebooks, or other kinds of media, type fmhy.net into your browser and they have a tonne of different media types and links for you to choose from. If your just starting check out there "adblocking and blocking trackers" section its a decent start for making sure you don't get caught or anything.

[-] Bwaz@lemmy.world 10 points 4 months ago

Canceled Prime earlier this year. Haven't missed it, can certainly do without ut.

I had a popup for ad free Amazon, a few dollars a month, so that was relevant to my interests and I signed up, then watched a movie.

There was another popup "ad-free experience is not available for this program"

I immediately cancelled, the popup should say "here's an ad, fuck you"

[-] Zoabrown@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago

Streaming’s new feature: dynamic pricing based on how emotionally invested you are.

we were in the middle of one of our favorite scifis when that happened. now we own the box set. then we realized it was the only reason we had that subscription. oops to them i guess.

[-] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago

After HBO was taken over by David “Piece of Shit” Zaslav multiple shows and movies disappeared while I was in the middle of watching them. I haven’t resubscribed since

[-] dan1101@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago

This is shitty, but as a programmer I'm kinda impressed.

[-] tempest@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 months ago

I mean those video players lazy load so it probably just requested the next chunk and got the "you gotta pay response" same as if you returned to a specific spot with a link after a long time.

[-] _cryptagion@anarchist.nexus 7 points 4 months ago

all shows are free if you sail the high seas

[-] Oaksey@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

Much like I paid for a year subscription, then they decided I had to watch ads on that plan unless I upgraded to the new plan.

[-] duncan_bayne@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

Your suffering is not a KPI

Some days I doubt that.

[-] archonet@lemy.lol 5 points 4 months ago

sounds to me like all of your shows should become free. Properly free.

Remember, companies die when people stop giving them money.

[-] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 4 points 4 months ago

Only had youtube cutting of a clip halfway because it was suddenly set to private. The amount of clips I put in Watch Later to have them disappear is also too high. Stop recommending slop that disappears later, stupid alghorithm.

While you where watching it as in between episodes or actually in the middle of an episode?

[-] northernlights@lemmy.today 9 points 4 months ago

I paused a little before the end of S2E09, came back a few hours later to it, and all of S2 was not free anymore.
