Didn't this game's creator say that a given update was the last content update quite a few times already?

[-] Kayday@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago

Same as the Terraria devs, yeah.
Glad he's found a passion project that makes him happy!

Terraria is going to keep adding versions until they jump to 2.0

To be honest, compared to 1.0, is almost a different game

[-] glimse@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Not looking for a full changelog or anything but what would you say have been some of the most significant changes over the years?

[-] Railcar8095@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

I mean, the original release had Skeletron as the final boss, which is not even the last one before hardmode now.

So 7 or 8 bosses, wings, "classes" (specialized equipment) including summoner with wasn't a thing at all, new weapon types like yoyos, expert mode, several biomes, many events and mini games, town building, NPCs, modding support...

modding support

As far as I know, terraria only supports resource packs, changing textures, sounds, text, that kinda stuff, right? tModLoader is a community project made by fans, and the game devs' contributions to that are in the domain of being receptive, supporting it being on steam, and potentially answering questions or making small changes to facilitate mods.

But on the topic of changes, can't forget how they added new content and put it behind a new difficulty, and then ended up doing that again. And then they added a special seed that has new content that bumps up the difficulty another level.

[-] glimse@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago

Ahh ok I've played since most of those were added but not the mini games or towns. Might have to give it another play this winter

[-] ech@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

Fyi, the next "last" update is expected to drop mid to late January (though it's been delayed multiple years at this point). If that's something you'd want to wait for.

[-] blind3rdeye@aussie.zone 4 points 1 week ago

In this particular update, they've said that it will not be the last. But yeah, January is highly likely.

It feels so bad how long it has been delayed. As you say, its been years now. But that's not because it keeps getting delayed over and over. It's only really been postponed once. The original release date was dropped because they decided to increase the scope, and then their feature-creep seemed to get out of hand. But I think that by far the biggest reason for the delay is the death of one of their team members. In that small tight-knit team it has caused a lasting malaise and loss of focus; understandably so, I think.

In any case, I'm looking forward to that update. Terraria is a great game.

[-] ech@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

I hadn't heard about the death. That's awful :(

Fwiw, my note about the delay wasn't a complaint, just a setting of expectations. I think it's amazing that they're still doing this much support, essentially for free, for so long. I'll take it whenever they manage to get it out. Super grateful for the whole team.

I think he has also said that there are other people working on the game now and he is mostly focusing on his new game iirc. So it sounds like he has just passed the torch and we're gonna get more Stardew content forever lol

[-] dxc@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 week ago

I just read the announcement. He's working solo on Haunted Chocolatier and says this about Stardew

with 1.7 I have been trying to take more of a “creative director” role in the team, so that (at least for now) I can focus the vast majority of my attention on Haunted Chocolatier.

and also

in order for me to maintain a full connection to the game, I need my hand to touch every piece of new content. And there are some aspects of content development which I insist on doing myself, like the music.

[-] TheRealKuni@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago

That was the last update where he was doing all the work, I think. Heavy lifting on newer updates is done by his employees now. His primary focus is Haunted Chocolatier, though he does approve everything that goes into Stardew Valley.

[-] ech@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 week ago

Is it a problem if he did?

[-] BuckenBerry@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

In the case of terraria I feel the game's become a bit overstuffed. Bosses like dear clops and the old one's army event don't fit neatly into progression and there are plenty of items that seem redundant since you can get a better version in 10 minutes. Obviously this is a minor complaint by someone who's been playing terraria on and off for nearly half my life but I do wish they worked on a full sequel but I doubt that's ever going to happen.

I've completed Stardew valley twice and I don't feel like replaying all the same character interactions. It feels a bit depressing to build up relationships the second time. That's why I'm so excited about haunted choclatier.

I do want the developers to work on what they're passionate about and I am glad they've supported these games for so long but I do wish they just let them rest.

[-] Sunsofold@lemmings.world 16 points 1 week ago

He's still going. This is the kind of person we need in every field.

[-] DoucheBagMcSwag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 1 week ago

FFS just make The haunted chocolatier a paid DLC for Stardew at this point

[-] Ashtear@piefed.social 5 points 1 week ago

Someone just needs to clone him so he can actually finish the new game.

[-] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

We would get new updates for Stardew twice as fast then lol

[-] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

it's not going to be nearly as good or as popular... so it's kind of a lost cause compared to the way bigger impact these DLC updates have

[-] cheers_queers@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

idk i have been waiting for years :(

[-] rtxn@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

For fuck's sake CA, please let me give you my money

[-] bonenode@piefed.social 5 points 1 week ago

You can always buy another copy from a different shop.

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 2 points 1 week ago

Or make 2 accounts

[-] tulwinn@startrek.website 1 points 1 week ago

And buy the soundtrack!

[-] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

I'm out of shops at this point

[-] zqwzzle@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

Can’t you buy another copy as a gift on some stores (thinking steam here)?

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I have two steam copies and a Playstation copy. I have given a lot already

[-] saltnotsugar@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

CA is such a great developer and I have no idea what I did to deserve him.

[-] Isolde@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Now, now.

He belongs to us all.

[-] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

All I wish for is Clint to get an online girlfriend, my wife to be able to hang out with her friends again, and the cute Joja cashier to move into town

[-] Tikiporch@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

An overall Joja redemption arc.

[-] HotsauceHurricane@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

The game that keeps on giving.

[-] etchinghillside@reddthat.com 1 points 1 week ago

Before or after chocolate game?

[-] ComfortableRaspberry@feddit.org 8 points 1 week ago

I feel like Haunted Chocolatier will become our version of Half Life 3

[-] ech@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Nah. I'm sure SD had a similar development time, we're just aware of it at this point, so it feels "delayed".

It'll be done when it's done. Declaring it a lost cause just because the solo Dev hasn't whipped it up in a year or two is misguided, to say the least.

[-] ComfortableRaspberry@feddit.org 0 points 1 week ago

It's because he's going back to Stardew Valley again and again. I'm fully aware that a single person can't press out a (good) game in a few months.

[-] CoffeeTails@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

ooooh, that's exiting! Maybe I should give it a go again. It's been ages since I played last time

[-] Pogbom@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

If you haven't played since 1.6 was released, you're in for a wild time!

[-] CoffeeTails@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

omg, I haven't played since 2022. It's going to be a whole new game then. Almost. haha
