As is tradition, at around this time of year, we discuss the latest developments in the communist plan to destroy Christmas and everything festive and jolly - including that bastard kulak Santa Claus. Down with holly and myrrh, and up with historical materialism!

This year, I'm highlighting the economic trend of de-Decemberization, as the world struggles to break free from the seasonal hegemony imposed by the North Pole. Some regard it as a rather overhyped phenomenon, stating that the chains of Christmas are too frozen for any country to thaw and break in the current environment. Others are more optimistic, and assert that perhaps an alternative world holiday could be established to outright replace it, or maybe a series of smaller holiday traditions can bring it down like a pack of wolves bringing down a moose.

To return to seriousness, as this year draws to a close, I hope everybody here - yes, also you, the person reading this - has a 2026 that was better than 2025, and that the efforts of the United States and their proxies are foiled at every turn. One day, humans will live in a world free from empires, and it would be nice if as many of us as possible lived to see that world's birth.

At the very least, I'd like to live to see an aircraft carrier sink beneath the waves.

Al Jazeera: Trump, Zelenskyy hail progress toward Russia-Ukraine peace deal

United States President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy have expressed optimism that a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine is close following their talks in Florida, even as the thorny issue of territory remains outstanding.

Addressing reporters after meeting Zelenskyy at the Mar-a-Lago estate and an earlier call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday, Trump said that Moscow and Kyiv were “closer than ever” to a peace deal.

“We have made a lot of progress on ending that war, which is certainty deadliest war since World War II,” Trump said during a news conference with Zelenskyy.

“We will see if it gets done, but it’s very close certainly.”

Zelenskyy said that a 20-point peace plan unveiled last week was “90 percent agreed” and that US-Ukraine security guarantees were “100 percent agreed.”

“We agreed that security guarantees are key milestone in achieving lasting peace and our teams will keep working on all aspects,” Zelenskyy said.

Still, the talks produced no visible breakthrough on the sensitive issue of Ukrainian territory.

Trump acknowledged that one or two “very tough” issues remained outstanding, including the status of the eastern Donbas region, which was annexed by Russia following its 2022 full-scale invasion.

Trump said the sides were “closer” to an agreement on a US proposal to create a “free economic zone” in parts of the region, under which Kyiv would withdraw its forces as part of a negotiated peace.

“I would not say agreed, but we’re getting closer to an agreement on that, and that’s a big issue. Certainly, that’s one of the big issues, and… it’s unresolved,” Trump said.

Zelenskyy reiterated his position that the issue of territory should be decided by the people of Ukraine and said that different aspects of the peace plan could be put to the public in a number of referenda.

“Of course, our society has to choose … because it’s their land … not of one person. It’s the land of our nation, for a lot of generations,” he said.

Following their talks, Trump and Zelensky held a joint phone call with key European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Trump has been trying to end the nearly four-year war in Ukraine since returning to the White House in January, showing irritation with both Zelenskyy and Putin while publicly acknowledging the difficulty of resolving the conflict.

Before his meeting with Zelenskyy on Sunday, Trump said the sides were in the “final stages of talking” and they had the “makings of a deal that’s good for Ukraine, good for everybody.”

Russia intensified its attacks on Ukraine’s capital in the days before the Florida meeting.

During talks between US and Ukrainian negotiators in Berlin earlier this month, the Trump administration agreed to offer certain security guarantees to Ukraine similar to those offered to other members of NATO.

The proposal came after Zelenskyy said he could agree to no longer seek membership of the security alliance if Ukraine received NATO-like guarantees to protect the country from Russian attacks.

Hope this whole thing can be put to rest ASAP, doesn't look like Trump has much patience for it anymore. Putin probably won't bite though.

[-] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 11 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

The whole peace talks charade has become pointless. Russia simply cannot end the war, their whole economy is structured around the "Special Military Operation", with large declines in civil industry and a whole payout and recruiting system for soldiers. Not a full on war economy where every male over 18 is sent to the front and every female is working in the factories, but an economy structured around the Ukraine war that aims to keep some level of normalcy while still fighting the war. Trump is probably upset, from his perspective, that Putin is looking a gift horse in the mouth by declining these offers, and Trump is not understanding that any promise of US-Russia economic co-operation is not going to be enough to suddenly stop the war and reset Russia's economy to a prewar state. When the war ends, Russia will experience a form of economic "shock therapy" as they go back to a prewar state.

As for Ukraine, they simply also have minimal incentive to stop the war. Ukraine may be losing territory, but it's at a snail's pace, and there is no sign of a rapid Russian advance soon, the frontlines have been almost frozen for years. The territory Russia wants in any ceasefire deal, may take over a year to capture at least. The Russia-Ukraine war has gone on for longer than the US campaign against Japan in the Pacific theatre during WW2. In 5 days time, the Ukraine war will have been going on for as long as the Soviet's campaign with the allies in WW2, from when Germany invaded the Soviet Union until Hitler committed suicide. The battlefield is static, Russia's biggest achievement in recent times was taking 15 months to capture a city with a pre war population of 60 thousand people. While Ukraine is losing territory, they are counting on their strategy of creating an "unmanned hellscape" of artillery and FPV drones near the front to attrit Russia. Even if losing territory is inevitable (it is), Ukraine is not going to give it away in a ceasefire agreement, they're going to make Russia pay as high a price as possible for it. This is a mainstream position in Ukrainian society. If Zelenskyy signs a deal giving up the Donbass without a fight, it's not the fascists he'll need to worry about, but the mainstream liberals too. No leader in Ukraine has the political capital to make such a decision post 24 February 2022.

[-] Awoo@hexbear.net 15 points 22 hours ago

Zelenskyy reiterated his position that the issue of territory should be decided by the people of Ukraine and said that different aspects of the peace plan could be put to the public in a number of referenda.

This is the only way to get the fascists under control. Have the people loudly demonstrate that they want something and the fascists will have to formulate around that rather than try to force things or else they'll see a nationwide backlash against their cultural control.

[-] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 12 points 21 hours ago

Surely the fascists wouldn't enjoy any kind of unfair advantage in a poll because of 4 years of depopulation, intimidation of their political enemies, and their direct ability to throw anyone they don't like into the meat grinder.

[-] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 21 points 1 day ago

“We have made a lot of progress on ending that war, which is certainty deadliest war since World War II,” Trump said during a news conference with Zelenskyy.

This line is such bullshit. Even if you assume that both Ukraine and Russia have had 1 million soldiers killed each (which is certainly an overestimate) it still doesn't even crack the top 5. The Korean War, Vietnam War, Second Congo War, the Soviet-Afghan War, and the Nigerian Civil War all had over 2 million dead.

China just test launched its YJ-20 hypersonic anti-ship missile. Here are a few interesting details about this weapon system:

"Maneuverable missiles that can exceed Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound, are considered hypersonic missiles, said Chinese military affairs expert Zhang Junshe. He told the Global Times that based on the appearance of the YJ-20, it is a boost-glide missile consisting of a rocket booster and a bicone glide vehicle. The bicone can form shock waves during hypersonic flight, which enables the missile's air rudders to perform maneuvers during the missile's terminal flight, boosting its defense penetration capabilities.

The YJ-20 can hit surface vessels via a nearly vertical angle like a ballistic missile, and with its hypersonic speed, it is very difficult to intercept, according to Zhang."

[-] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 8 points 19 hours ago

Maneuverable missiles that can exceed Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound, are considered hypersonic missiles.

Not necessarily. Maneuverable ballistic missiles exceeding Mach 5 at some point in flight, have existed since the 1980s, and no one was calling them hypersonic missiles. Hypersonic weapons are all about sustained hypersonic speeds within the earth's atmosphere on a non ballistic trajectory for the majority of the flight duration. Hypersonic Glide Vehicles (HGVs) and Hypersonic Cruise Missiles (HCMs). China has these (I'll mention them later), but the YJ-20 is not really that. If the YJ-20s re-entry vehicle (RV) is considered an HGV, then so can the RV of the Pershing-II from the 1980s. Both are biconical, feature rudders, and can conduct terminal maneuvers, attain hypersonic speeds at some point in flight, strike at a near vertical angle. In fact, they look almost exactly the same!

The concept behind China's DF-21/JL-1/YJ-20 maneuverable ballistic missiles is in fact very similar to the Pershing-II. You have a single stage variant (YJ-20), and two stage variant (DF-21) sharing the same Maneuverable Re-entry Vehicle (MaRV), which the Pershing-II also did. In China's case, there's an air launched version of the DF-21 called the JL-1, and the YJ-20 can be ship launched. Also the single stage YJ-20 has no aerodynamic fins on the booster stage, relying only on thrust vectoring, and the aerodynamic fins on the MaRV fold up, so it can fit in the vertical launch system of a Chinese Navy destroyer/cruiser.

YJ-20 and JL-1:

Would this effectively make aircraft carriers a non issue for the PLAN? It seems like an incredible feat of engineering to design something like that in and of itself, let alone to make it accurate enough to hit a moving ship in the sea.

These new weapons of war are truly terrifying - especially after seeing the videos of those Iranian hypersonics. I can't imagine seeing those IRL along with the other missile and drone swarms from the perspective of the opposition...

Trump on his message to the families of Americans who died fighting for Ukraine: "So sad that a thing like that would happen"

trump-who-must-go

[-] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 60 points 1 day ago

Not sure where to post this so it goes here as it's in a newspaper. Just an absolutely insane article I read in the Financial Times today, if you ever need a reminder that the ultrarich are ghouls.

Some of the richest Americans are confronted with a thorny question this time of year: is spending the festive season with family worth paying millions more in taxes? For millionaires and billionaires that declare permanent residency in low-tax jurisdictions but spend much of the year elsewhere, their location in December’s final days can be a determining factor for the size of their tax bill. And with the full-on return of in-person work meetings and events since the Covid-19 pandemic, the wealthy have increasingly turned to a stable of tools, including the apps TaxBird and Monaeo, to help them make sure they spend less than six months and a day in high-tax jurisdictions such as New York.

What the fuck is the point of having unfathomable wealth if you can't even spend the holidays with your family? Like what the fuck are you doing? Why do you need an app to track whether you spend 183 days in Manhattan per year??

But being prudent comes with choices. One friend recently told Jim Simon, who co-founded TaxBird in 2016, that his “damn app” kept him from visiting family this year.

“I would’ve liked to have taken the grandkids to the tree a few years ago,” said Klein, referring to the famous Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center that is illuminated with lights every December. “But I couldn’t.”

This devotion to keeping down taxes can lead to extremes. Klein said some of his clients fly into New Jersey and wait on one side of the George Washington Bridge, which connects to New York, until just after midnight to avoid triggering another day in the state.

Imagine the sad life you must live where tax obligations of like 5% on income of over $30 million "keep you" from hanging out with your grandkids. Imagine just fucking around in New Jersey until midnight all to save like a million dollars in taxes when your net worth is in the tens or hundreds of millions. Insanity. Being rich rots your brain so much that the rich aren't even good at being rich.

Per https://archive.is/atV7O

[-] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago

Any reasonable person with more than $20 million would simply stop working and enjoy their life. But the wealth just completely takes over their brains.

[-] SchillMenaker@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago

Who's fucking counting? Does this writer think that "exact number of days spent in New York" is the singular item on a billionaire's tax return that they tell the truth about?

[-] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago

Actually New York is extremely zealous with this shit. They use cell phone tracking, credit card statements, all sorts of crazy things to claw back this money. They really are counting, and they really do target the rich, because it's like winner take all, you know? There's no sliding scale, it's either boom they get millions more in tax revenue or they don't, so might as well go crazy with it.

I forgot to mention but last month, on the same day Arce stopped being president, he got expelled from MAS by, I'm not kidding, the same guy he put to replace Evo as the President of MAS. They said something about him stealing funds, but seems like bullshit, he lost all political power and is now in jail because of that. I wonder if Evo is going to try and take back MAS now that all his rivals are basically in jail or too irrelevant to do something.

[-] sexywheat@hexbear.net 18 points 1 day ago

I have said this so, so many times, but Evo needs to pick a younger and more vibrant successor for MAS, or arrange for some sort of party leadership election. You can only fight against legally established term limits for so long (however undemocratic they may be) until you're just pissing into the wind.

[-] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 21 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

a younger and more vibrant successor for MAS

That was supposed to be Andronico Rodriguez. But Evo prefered Arce as his main guy. Many people in Bolivia and South America called him the "Younger Vesion of Evo Morales" (Much like how people say that Guillermo Boulos is the younger version of the 1980s Lula da Silva, I think even Lula said that).

Andrónico Rodríguez Ledezma (born 11 November 1988) is a Bolivian cocalero activist, political scientist, politician, and trade unionist who served as president of the Senate from 2020 to 2025. He served as senator for Cochabamba. Rodríguez's lengthy career in the cocalero union.

As a child, Rodríguez accompanied his father to trade union meetings, becoming proficient in the leadership style of the Chapare coca growers, even participating in cocalero-led strikes and blockades against US-sponsored coca eradication efforts in the region.

With his accession to the vice presidency of the Six Federations, Rodríguez's public profile rose exponentially. Reporting for Infobae, journalist Tuffí Aré noted that "since his election in September 2018, [Rodríguez] almost always [appears] on the right or left side of Evo Morales ... the young character is already the president's most trusted man in his greatest stronghold (the Chapare)". Even as Rodríguez hosted the launch of Morales's third reelection bid, media outlets had already begun to point to him as a possible successor to the country's longest-serving president, with Red UNO even labeling him "the heir" of Morales.

Rodríguez, for his part, rejected that label as "monarchical", considering himself "part of the renewal of the [Bolivian socialist movement]" but assuring that "leaderships are built; they are not designated or assumed by decree".

Just over a month after Morales's removal, representatives of the MAS's youth wing in Cochabamba put forward Rodríguez as their presidential candidate, with an ensuing opinion poll published by Página Siete demonstrating him leading amid a field of other opposition candidates. In January, the Pact of Unity—a coalition of MAS-aligned trade syndicates—proclaimed former foreign minister David Choquehuanca, "an Aymara comrade", as their preferred presidential candidate, with Rodríguez, "[a] Quechua comrade", presented as his running mate.

However, that proposition was rejected by Morales, who considered Rodríguez "too young" to hold the position. The former president instead selected Luis Arce as the MAS's presidential pick, accompanied by Choquehuanca as his running mate, with Morales describing Rodríguez's sidelining as a "sacrifice" the MAS youth would have to make.

Rodríguez ran for president of Bolivia in the 2025 elections but failed to advance to a runoff, placing fourth. Running separately from the MAS, he was called a "traitor" by MAS leader and former president Evo Morales, and was pelted with stones by a mob as he cast his vote in the election.

[-] sexywheat@hexbear.net 21 points 1 day ago

Didn't Arce turn out to be a massive lib though?

[-] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 18 points 1 day ago

Arce always tended to be more Social Democrat than Radical Socialist or Democratic Socialist. I think he (Arce studied a long time in Brazil and had a lot of links with the Workers' Party of Lula) wanted to replicate what Lula da Silva did in Brazil and become more moderate while getting the liberal vote (mostly Urban Mestizo workers and Mestizo Elite) and seem to have alienated the Native, Rural Mestizo Workers and White Workers who usually voted for MAS. In the end he ended up getting betrayed by his own faction within MAS. Meanwhile former Arce VP, David Choquehuanca, is now working for the UN.

[-] AlHouthi4President@lemmy.ml 30 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I think this narrative of "duped Syrians" misunderstands what has been happening.

The people were beaten into submission and subjected to one of the most intense information warfare campaigns in the history of the human species. Most Syrians (including Sunnis) are facing severe poverty and living under mob rule.

Article

The “comfortable environment” Israel enjoys today in southern Syria results from the dismantling of Syrian national identity, far more than from any voluntary cooperation of the Syrian people, as claimed by the current regime’s cheap propaganda. What appears as cooperation is, in most cases, a by-product of disintegration: communities fractured by years of war and excluded from political life seek any power capable of shielding them from annihilation.

I can agree to that, but there were absolutely domestic terrorist elements in the al nusra front as well as foreign ones.

In rip-bozo news:

Denis Nikitin / Kapustin, aka White Rex, leader of the Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK), a unit of Russian neo-nazis created by Ukrainian military intelligence, has been killed at the front.

The RDK announced it on their social media, claiming that he was killed by a Russian FPV drone on the frontlines of the Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Kapustin was quite an important figure in the global neo-nazi scene. As a child, he received a visa to move from Russia to Germany. A rather special visa — for those of Jewish descent. This didn’t stop him from opening a white nationalist merchandise network called ‘White Rex’, which also became his nickname. Eventually wanted for violent crimes in both the EU and Russia, he found a welcome home in Ukraine. After 2022, Ukraine’s military intelligence gathered the motley crew of Russian neo-nazis around Nikitin to create the Russian Volunteer Corps.

Nikitin’s strategy of opening MMA fight clubs for racially conscious whites only has become popular for neo-nazis around the world. Nikitin and his Russian emigre friends in Ukraine also played a major role in glorifying the 2019 Christchurch massacre, translating the racist manifesto into Russian numerous times.

Nikitin also played a direct role in aiding neo-nazi forces as far away as the southern hemisphere. Australian media was already writing in 2021 of Nikitin’s influential role and even direct involvement in organizing Australia’s ‘National Socialist Network’, which nowadays is becoming more and more visible.

[...]

Nikitin’s RDK has in fact lost a number of troops to frontline fighting in recent weeks. One week ago, RDK media put out obituaries for a number of its fighters.

According to Ukrainian blogger Anatoly Shariy, Nikitin died fighting for the southern town of Huliaipole. I’ll cover the situation there tomorrow, but what’s important is that the city is now essentially lost to the Russians. The RDK was chucked in to try and salvage a disastrous situation.

Things are clearly bad at the frontlines if the likes of the RDK are being thrown into dangerous assault missions. There clearly just isn’t enough dispensable infantry left. Now it’s up to the RDK, which was originally intended as a psywar tool to undermine Russian society, rather than an infantry assault unit.

An ignominious fate for the RDK. This is a very well-funded unit, with support from powerful Russian (-Israeli) oligarchs like Leonid Nevzlin. The RDK is one of the star units of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR), and its leaders constantly go on interviews, playing the part of the fearless special op superhero.

The infantry deficit must be quite bleak if UA is throwing their media battalions into already lost cities.

Yes, this is very good news. Kiev has been forced to use more and more of its 'valuable' Neo-Nazi and mercenary units in these recent battles, because it is running low on conscripts.

If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
