MOD ACTION: I'm locking this post. It's gone off the rails a bit.

[-] DebatableRaccoon@lemmy.ca 93 points 3 weeks ago

Pirate to own what they want me to rent.

[-] Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca 64 points 3 weeks ago

Perfectly happy to pay artists for their work; entirely unwilling to pay the scum that aggregate and charge for access to that art, with countless strings attached.

This could mean either thing!

We're at a point where the improved user experience is enough justification.
Every service ever is putting revenue above costumer satisfaction. Every streaming app gets in the way of what you want to watch so they can funnel you to the same 3 Movies/TV Shows. Searching is almost useless you get a few results related to your search term and the rest is unrelated garbage.
The other day I was watching a movie at a friend's house on Netflix. When you hit pause, the movie minimizes into a card on the left and the rest of the screen turns into a fucking advertisement.
Like, not even a "recommendation" for another movie on the service, just a full blown ad for something else, ours was a food delivery app ad.

I've gotten spoiled by the Piracy experience. Over here it's me first and me above everything.
None of my 'services' fill my screen with ads for their new season so the shareholders can recoup their half a billion investment.
They show me my media and get the fuck out of my way. It's refreshing.
The apps are made by people who actually use them daily and there's no pressure to make a "return of investment", they just make the best user experience they can and that's it.

¿Por qué no los dos?

[-] hzl@piefed.blahaj.zone 16 points 3 weeks ago

There's a minor issue with this meme.

I pirate but still go to local indie house cinemas to contribute to good artists. I’ll go commercial cinema too as that’s only £5 and you can take your own food.

[-] obey@lemmy.wtf 15 points 3 weeks ago

Piracy is socialism

[-] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 14 points 3 weeks ago

Pirate to avoid DRM/antifeatures: 😎

[-] Lifter@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 3 weeks ago

[Insert "we are not the same" meme]

[-] ProgrammingSocks@pawb.social 2 points 3 weeks ago

All of the above. Fuck capitalism, fuck DRM, and fuck giving the 1% more money lmao

Yet here we are with the fuckass on our screens.

[-] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 3 weeks ago

If we're talking about denying profits to fatcats leveraging the Intellectual Property legislation they corruptly bought (for example anti circumvention legislation, business methods patents or the insane copyright lengths nowadays), then Piracy is pretty much a Moral Obligation.

[-] purplemonkeymad@programming.dev 11 points 3 weeks ago

I mean I pay artists when I can. I buy and download songs from an artist I like, but for what ever reason this one track is not available to download. Stream only! I can't be sure, but I feel like I should say fuck you to netflix.

This is the shit that makes pirates.

[-] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 weeks ago

If we're talking about music, go see the band and buy a shirt. That will help them like 1000000x more than paying for netflix, spotify, etc.

[-] Buffy@libretechni.ca 6 points 3 weeks ago

Huge middle finger to Netflix. 40% of all of my blocked DNS queries are Netflix trackers. And the real kicker is that most were coming from TVs with Netflix installed, not even signed into my account. Take from them what you can, because they're doing the same with you.

No officer, I do not "pirate"

I merely ask a friend of a friend to share with me free stuff, which are, obviously, totally perfectly legal and absolutely not illegal copyright infringement. 😉

He goes by the username: Ligma

[-] pyrinix@kbin.melroy.org 10 points 3 weeks ago

I pirate because my money is more important to be spent on necessities. A video game isn't going to pay my bills. A music track isn't going to pay my car payment. A book isn't going to pay my groceries.

Entertainment to me is just a luxury. Not everything I've gotten was pirated, if but spent sparingly when sales and deals come around. But if me wanting something such as a game is going to come between that and me needing food for another week or two. The food is going to win out and that game is going to be pirated.

I don't have all of the time in the world either to keep waiting, waiting, and waiting for deals to be low enough for me to afford whatever it is.

[-] upstroke4448@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I still pay even though I pirate. Debrid service, Usenet etc.

It's always been a service issue not a money issue for me. I realize not everyone has the luxury of that issue.

Right now I'm paying about $6/month. I could always reduce it to 0 but at this price the extra QOL features are worth it.

[-] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 3 weeks ago

My dad stole cable. Just continuing the family tradition.

[-] Engywuck@lemmy.zip 9 points 3 weeks ago

I pirate because I'm a cheap bastard.

[-] Hyperrealism@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 weeks ago

I am a pirate because I are.

[-] Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 weeks ago
[-] Hyperrealism@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 weeks ago

Arrrrrrrrrr.

[-] nonentity@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 weeks ago

‘Piracy’ is only a problem if ‘Intellectual Property’ is treated as a legitimate concept, and not an arbitrary construct of artificial constraint imposed on intrinsically abundant resources.

Copyright and patents should be replaced with a system designed to quantify and attribute the true value of ideas, and not reward locking them away as tightly as possible.

[-] alsaaas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 weeks ago

Always wanted to ask whether this is a meme com now and whether piracy memes could be separate so the main remains for proper interesting discussions and questions

[-] cm0002@libretechni.ca 13 points 3 weeks ago

I don't think the Threadiverse is big enough for it to matter in most cases, this comm is huge, but yet there were 3 posts all day yesterday to it

Plus, memes are perfectly capable of sparking serious discussions and questions to lol

[-] ThatGuyNamedZeus@feddit.org 7 points 3 weeks ago

Our tax dollars are subsidising hollywood and AAA video games. We already paid for them

but just my personal advice. Don't pirate your OS and don't pirate security software, that shit needs to run exactly right and cracked versions could have all kinds of things hidden inside of them

[-] weirdo_from_space@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Windows and Linux are both free and MacOS coames pre-installed in custom made hardware, so I don't know who would pirate an OS anymore. I'm with you on security software though.

[-] WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago

so I don't know who would pirate an OS anymore

those who don't know what they're doing, but some are still doing it so good point

I've donated more to private trackers than I probably would pay for several years of a streaming service

(a private linux iso tracker, of course)

[-] Petter1@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 3 weeks ago

Pirating is the only way culture/media can survive in a digital capitalist world…

[-] csolisr@hub.azkware.net 2 points 3 weeks ago

Pirate to archive culture, then refuse to consume it regardless in order to reduce demand and influence of Big Media
