If this forecast holds, the infrastructure damage from this storm is going to be catastrophic, potentially worse than a category 5 hurricane. People will be without power for weeks or potentially months and the roads will be completely impassable with downed trees and power lines.

Any comrades in these areas, please do your best to stay safe and warm. Stock up on some non-perishable food if you still have time.

As the polar vortex continues its terminal decline this will become more frequent. It's fascinating the way in which Mother Nature wages irregular warfare on our built environment. Southern states have no capacity for snow removal nor de-icing, not to mention the damage from frozen pipes, downed lines, etc. People truly underestimate the scale at which this will accelerate and fundamentally change the character of large swaths of poor areas of the US.

The only advice I can give is layer your socks and keep extra dry pairs with you in case you need to travel. Also keep a few cheap lighters in your car in case you get stuck, they can help keep your fingers warm so that you maintain dexterity.

Quick pro tip for people in this place who haven't had to deal with cold like this before: be careful with your layering of clothing, especially if you're expecting to move around a lot. If you layer up a shitload and then start exercising (walking long distances, lifting lots of heavy stuff, etc) you will sweat so much that your clothes get wet, and then when you stop moving you will freeze. If you're expecting to do exercise try to strip your layers down to just whatever keeps the windchill off, or at least have dry base layer replacements on hand.

Dang, I'd probably die on day 1 of freezing temps, because I sweat like a motherfucker very easily

my life has generally been a steady journey north and it has been a revelation how much more prepared and coordinated communities can be for extreme weather events.

the fact that southern states have not frequently had these ice storms making them less prepared to help people in crisis is wildly exacerbated by austerity politics individualizing risks by default. "oh you don't have a fully off the grid set up with food, water and fuel stockpiles? well how dare you!"

where i live now has a very resilient power grid and has been blasting out the schedule and locations of "warming centers" around town that will be available 24-7, including for sleeping over night.

the state governments of south rarely even make any effort for the more common forecasted events like hurricanes, so if this is as bad as the build up has been anticipating, its going to be really fucked up for a lot of people. and TECOT is going to gouge the shit out of everyone for energy usage is my extremely cold take.

[-] Ishmael@hexbear.net 17 points 3 weeks ago

It was the same thing with COVID. Where a lot of states had mask mandates and closed things down, Southern states were willing to shove the elderly and immunocompromised into the furnace of capitalism to keep the wheels moving under the auspices of "individual accountability"

doggirl-kiss i appreciate the thought. realistically i will probably be fine (albeit miserable) but i fear for the many, many homeless people in my city

That explains the photo of Ted Cruz on his way to California.

[-] SickSemper@hexbear.net 21 points 3 weeks ago

I believe he was going to Mexico, as is his wont

[-] dead@hexbear.net 23 points 3 weeks ago

On Tuesday, Ted Cruz was spotted on a flight to Laguna Beach California. His staff told to the news that he was on a work trip.

[-] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 4 points 3 weeks ago

hes going to that hotel in laguna where two groups of different private security company guys got into a melee trying to arrest each other for trespassing due to a contract dispute between the owner and the leaseholder.

ted wants to support their devotion to free market innovation.

Mother nature heard our demands of war on the American people seriously it seems.

This is going to be devastating to places that aren't equipped to handle snow or ice buildup and plunging temperatures.

Godspeed to any comrades exposed by this.

Here in Alberta, we have a brief cold spell here today of negative 20, and then it's positive weather by monday.

[-] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 39 points 3 weeks ago

Texas gonna have fun with their fully private isolated grid again I'm sure

[-] LeninWalksTheEarth@hexbear.net 33 points 3 weeks ago

the south really cant handle this shit at all. They dont prepare for these events since they dont happen often enough. Im thankful to live in an area that has always had snow, albeit less and less over time. It used to snow on halloween and thanksgiving, never does now.

Cherry on the poopy weather cake, the ranges for the really bad "hot" weather and really bad "cold" weather are both moving in opposite directions.

You winterize your house as best you can for the occasional (meaning, once every few years) blizzard... which is a fucking thing now... and your house becomes even more of an oven in the summer. And if you're broke when the bad weather is predicted... I got lucky that I've been working a full time job for the last 6 months now. Still got no savings but I can juggle credit cards a bit easier when shit like this happens.

On another note, at least locally, meteorologists have been talking about the storm for about a week+ now and while shit was super busy at the grocery store where I work, everybody has been way more polite than they usually are while stockers are racing around stuffing the shelves as full as possible with whatever they can pull off the delivered pallets today.

In all the hustle and bustle, I managed to get some customers out the door without having to pay for a few of their things.

An inch of ice is baffling. A quarter inch will take down power lines with the extra weight

[-] rufuscrispo@hexbear.net 22 points 3 weeks ago

an extra word of caution: ice build-up can also fell trees, so be safe out there and clear away from any older pines and the like

[-] NewOldGuard@lemmy.ml 26 points 3 weeks ago

I’m in a highly affected area but luckily we’re more used to snow and ice here. But it’s gonna be a mess regardless. There’s effectively no state support in place, and the mutual aid orgs I work with up here are so small and shoestring that they can really only coordinate some small relief with basic supplies. The shelters aren’t opening up their doors any more than normal, the charities remain stingy. It’s every person for themselves and I hate it

[-] context@hexbear.net 23 points 3 weeks ago

holy fuck that is legitimately terrifying

[-] DornerStan@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 3 weeks ago

Y'all find out where the water shutoff for your place is, and see if you need to have a tap running, or something to keep pipes from bursting.

[-] The_hypnic_jerk@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

It will not be worse than a cat 5 what the hell. Cat 5 wipes out your town, like all of it

But yeah it will be bad with that amount of ice

[-] Philosoraptor@hexbear.net 19 points 3 weeks ago

He said "infrastructure damage," which is extremely plausible. Even a regular ice storm does WAY more damage to power lines and trees than you'd think it would. The magnitude of this combined with the fact that the power grid in a lot of these places is perpetually hanging on by a thread anyway (and nobody owns any serious winter gear or knows how to prep for a big winter storm) is a recipe for pretty serious damage. It's not gonna take the roof off of houses (though trees might do damage to some homes), but power down for weeks and roads impassable for days isn't at all out of the question.

[-] john_browns_beard@hexbear.net 18 points 3 weeks ago

This won't destroy buildings (maybe some that already have structural issues or second-hand through pipes bursting) but it will completely wreck power lines and roads. A quarter inch of ice can bring down enough trees to cause issues for a week or more, I can't even imagine what an inch of ice will do, especially in a part of the country that has zero resources to handle it.

[-] The_hypnic_jerk@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah my bad. I get prickly on hurricane comparisons. It'll be significant nonetheless and an inch of ice is indeed pretty terrible
