Rest in piss Discord. Fucking walled garden bullshit.

[-] Jumbie@lemmy.zip 40 points 4 days ago

Ha. Discord is about to lose me with this spying shit.

That's a data leak waiting to happen.

This sucks ass and even worse that there isn't a competitor that's anywhere near Discord's level yet. And no, Matrix isn't a discord competitor.

FWIW the title is wrong, they won't require age verification for everyone, you just won't be able to access 18+ servers and see porn unless you're verified. And according to Discord the verification videos stay on-device and never gets sent to servers. If this is true then at least it's better than the privacy nightmare of other platforms...

This was already launched last year for the UK and Australia, and now it's going global.

Screw you for pushing this, UK and Australia.

Yeah, there are certainly options that offer nearly the same level of functionality (or at least, discounting the features most people don't use), but none that are anywhere close as easy to set up.

So other than matrix, is there any other open source system that people recommend?

Ive had a heck of a time with matrix for years. Im glad it exists, but its just not what I like to use. The signup process + logging in system is much too complex for a normal user.

[-] LodeMike@lemmy.today 5 points 4 days ago

What about the sign-up process is too complex?

[-] TowardsTheFuture@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 days ago

Right? For normal user just say “download element and sign up.”

If you wanna do more than that, sure you could find a home server that isn’t matrix’s server, you could get a client that isn’t element. But like, normal users don’t gotta do all that.

age inference model, a new system that runs in the background to help determine whether an account belongs to an adult, without always requiring users to verify their age

Quick make sure you all have chat histories talking about the weather with responses like “we needed the rain”, discussions about contemporary jazz, and sharing images and memes of common homeowner woes. Be as Gen X as possible such as talking about how you were outside until sun down as a kid but then telling recent stories about how you called the cops on kids skateboarding in the street outside your home. Anything to convince the model you are 40+.

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago

Calling cops on kids is boomer shit, don't put that on us

[-] Ghostie@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 days ago

Haha. Sorry bud

"social media is toxic ban it for young people you aren't seriously suggesting social media isn't like cigarettes for kids - they said as the lock turned with a click.

[-] TowardsTheFuture@lemmy.zip 6 points 4 days ago

So does .zip have a matrix server to sign up with? Cuz…. Looks like matrix is gonna happen

[-] DGen@piefed.zip 4 points 4 days ago

Ah. No worries kids trying to get around it sending their faces to a non disclosed age verification service..
