I ain't scanning shit.

Teamspeak, Steam groups/chat, etc.

I knew discord would go to shit after going public but even I didn't predict it would be this fast.

[-] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

You can thank Roblox for this shit.

Tbf statistical calculations put grooming on discord in the higher percentages unfortunately.

That said I don't get what their endgame is. Blanket ID verifications will clearly eat into their bottom line, making it unsustainable. Either there's some limits on it that I'm not aware of or they just budget in a huge decrease in margins.

I just don't get the logic of "we do it to fight grooming", because it just doesn't make sense timing wise, but "we do it because UK and Australia are making us do it anyway" also doesn't pan out because I just cannot imagine the predicted results look manageable.

The results are kinda obvious regardless. Losing their core audience and subsequently twisting their bottom line, just like Facebook.

That's fucked

My life is on there, and I ain't gonna give them any ID. Wth do they expect me to do

[-] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

They expect you to give them all your data

[-] krolden@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago

They already have if their entire life is on there

[-] Darkcoffee@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Steam groups now work like discord. We're migrating there until I figure out how to host a server of Teamspeak or Mumble.

[-] reagansrottencorpse@lemmy.ml 16 points 1 day ago

Can we just use ai generated faces?

[-] rainbowbunny@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 day ago

It may work for some but for the majority of applications I don't believe it will work. And potentially might get your account deactivated, like with Facebook.

[-] pimpampoom@lemmy.zip 19 points 1 day ago

Time to delete that crap I guess

I think this may not be the best time for them to do that….

Is it really? How many people are actually gonna quit Discord instead of grumble angrily about it? Look at what happened with Reddit. They did something users don't like, the users got angry and protested, most of them accepted the changes and stayed.

[-] TommySoda@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I have not seen a single person say this is a good idea. From Reddit, to Twitter, to Bluesky, and Lemmy. It's pretty much universally hated everywhere you go.

[-] NOPper@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago

Our small friend group server if about 50 people spread across the country immediately started talking about alternatives. People are sick of the constant enshitification. They even brought up wanting one of us to self host whatever we move to so we can prevent this shit.

They're mostly non-tech folks too, they just put up with my open source/privacy convos occasionally 😁

[-] nieminen@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Me and all my brothers (grew up Mormon, I have many brothers) quit both reddit, and now discord.

[-] otacon239@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

I’m giving Stoat.Chat a go this evening. Looks promising as a self-host alternative.

[-] Kayday@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Was trying to get it set up earlier, but doesn't look like it has good Linux support yet. I could also be stupid, I never rule that out.

[-] otacon239@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I had missed that it doesn’t have voice support. The closest thing to a relatively simple setup I’ve found is VoceChat. It doesn’t self-host voice, but lets you link in a third party known as Agora, who offers free monthly voice minutes, but they’re still a third party. The setup wasn’t the worst, but definitely took careful reading.

[-] Blaiz0r@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

What's wrong with Steam or Mumble?

[-] otacon239@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

Not all of my friends are on Steam and I specifically want something where a client is optional. The only way to convince someone to move away from what they’re already using is to make it as convenient as possible, so I’m looking for something with a web client, mobile app, and desktop client.

[-] nieminen@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

The verification email won't show up. I'm stuck.

[-] breadleyloafsyou@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

i couldn't get a stoat account setup today. The emails are showing up hours later and don't work lol. It was super dissappointing because stoat seemed easy to host. started working on a matrix setup to self host instead.

I would switch tonight but there's not voice chat in the self hosted version yet.

[-] hopfi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

But doesn’t have a client (yet)?

[-] hperrin@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I just set up my own Matrix server. Holy shit that was annoyingly hard.

I’m not even done. I have to set up Element Call for audio/video.

[-] SpacePirate@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 day ago

Pretty sure audio calling is also not fully encrypted? And still no game streaming with video or audio, last I checked.

[-] hperrin@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago

I don’t really mind it not being e2e encrypted, since it’s hosted on my own hardware, but that’s good to know.

[-] SecurityPro@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

I have some discord bots for use with some self-hosted applications (changedetection, etc...). Does Matrix have similar functionality?

[-] eodur@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

Yes. Plenty of examples if you search.

[-] eco_game@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 1 day ago

Users who aren’t verified as adults will not be able to access age-restricted servers and channels, won’t be able to speak in Discord’s livestream-like “stage” channels, and will see content filters for any content Discord detects as graphic or sensitive. They will also get warning prompts for friend requests from potentially unfamiliar users, and DMs from unfamiliar users will be automatically filtered into a separate inbox.

That shouldn't be too restricting for people using discord to chat with their friends though.

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

We'll see what they actually implement, and how they do so.

[-] idlesheep@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It's already implemented. Tons of users have already scanned their faces/IDs to prove their identity/age. This is just a global rollout.

[-] JoeTheSane@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I’m deleting my account the day before they implement this.

[-] ripcord@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago
[-] JoeTheSane@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago

That’s a good point. I haven’t actually used it in a while. But, my thought on it was if I do it at that specific time and in the hope that others do the same, it sends a message.
