All the well deserved vitriol aside, there's a really straightforward explanation for this. The Maroun family owns the competing Ambassador bridge, and has been using it to extort cross border traffic for a generation now. This competition is bad for them. And guess what? They're Trump donors. So this is just standard, run-of-the-mill gangster capitalism again.
At this point I say we should just cut our losses and just let that bridge sit unoccupied for now
And close the Canadian End of the US private bridge.
Nah, leave it open to the border, and let Canadians throw rotten tomatoes across. Could also turn it into some sort of plaza with artisan shops and whatnot. Make it a tourist attraction.
Canada paid for, and built the bridge. We should just ban any vehicle with US plates from using it. Although, no Canadians should be crossing anyways.
