I was literally playing Jackbox last night and the task was to sort animals by number of teeth. Apparently whales have zero "teeth" but snails have thousands of microscopic "teeth"? ok biologists, get fucked.

Overeducated and undersexed, many such cases

[-] 9to5@hexbear.net 12 points 3 weeks ago

If I cant knock them out with my fists they dont count as teeth .

[-] microfiche@hexbear.net 9 points 3 weeks ago

That actually a good way to tell if it's baleen or not baleen, and therefore a tooth.

[-] Lussy@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

So if I can’t knock em out with my fist it’s baleen?

[-] microfiche@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago

I think this is exactly how the scientists test for baleen.

Ah yes, the friedrich-weisbach test

[-] Keld@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago

So bears don't have teeth because you couldn't beat a bear in a fight?

[-] 9to5@hexbear.net 2 points 3 weeks ago

I could totally defeat a bear 1v1

[-] Keld@hexbear.net 1 points 3 weeks ago

I could take on any bear in guitar hero

[-] microfiche@hexbear.net 13 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah I dunno. Taken exactly as you've posted it here, baleen and teeth aren't the same.

I'm not sure I really care that much, but I think there's a difference.

If it looks like teeth, filters ‘barnacles’ like teeth, fits in the mouth like teeth, it’s fucking teeth. What is this woke nonsense

[-] AvocadoVapelung@hexbear.net 13 points 3 weeks ago

ain't that the tooth

The purpose of a system is what it does.

Or something, idk

[-] Dessa@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago

So you concede, sir? nerd

No but seriously, what is the difference?

[-] microfiche@hexbear.net 9 points 3 weeks ago

Baleen is used to filter plankton, teeth are used to grind/chew?

is this not something that's readily known?

[-] Dessa@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago

But they both process food as the first part of the digestive tract. It seems like it's just a minor distinction that shouldn't really require hard boundaries

[-] Zoift@hexbear.net 4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

And thats why ducks have baleen, and are in-fact fish. Monks was right

[-] Lussy@hexbear.net 4 points 3 weeks ago

u/microfiche will never fool me

[-] Zoift@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago

Meanwhile theres polyphyletic bullshit like crabs or flies out there made of dozens of different taxa. Scientists making shit up as they go along and we have to pretend their tvtropeass catagories about things are special. I CAN READ GREEK TOO AND YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG

[-] Keld@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago

"This animal breeds true across species line" THEN WHAT DOES SPECIE MEAN YOU ASSHOLES?!

[-] Keld@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago

Actually no berries are berries and the only things that are berries are things that are not berries.

[-] BobDole@hexbear.net 4 points 3 weeks ago

The only real berries are dingleberries

[-] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago

Dr. Dennis Tin was attempting to use radiation to strengthen teeth, until a freak a accident turned him into the Enameled Avenger, The Tooth!
