Isn't New Orleans already sinking?

Might just be because I'm not rich enough, but who has a 5cm thick credit card?

Confused me as well, but they don't mean the thickness but probably the shorter end of the rectangle. As usual American metaphors for simple distances are confusing as fuck.

I genuinely think it's a running joke with the industry.

Seattle was built by digging through the local hills and dumping them into the bay. Half the downtown wouldn't exist without these massive earthworks done a century ago.

Still plently of hills left to start backfilling if needed.

Seriously. i don't get the methodology here. Sea levels could increase ten feet and Seattle would lose like 5 city blocks. The AVERAGE elevation of Seattle is 180ft above sea level.

Sea level is irrelevant. This isn't about water rise, but the land itself sinking (compressing). This can cause damage to infrastructure, buildings, and alter where areas lie in the water table (potentially increasing flooding).

Is this due to ground water removal?

What is geoscience?

Geoscience (also called Earth Science) is the study of Earth. Geoscience includes so much more than rocks and volcanoes, it studies the processes that form and shape Earth's surface, the natural resources we use, and how water and ecosystems are interconnected. Geoscience uses tools and techniques from other science fields as well, such as chemistry, physics, biology, and math! Read more...
