No warning, not even a "Don't do it again email" - I had a work account, that was logged in on my works laptop, I made a comment critical of Netanyahu, and the Gaza genocide, which got that account banned from /pics. This was months ago, then I made a comment on pics, on my main account. That's it, gone, banned.

I even have another spare account, from 2008, logged in to that, that's banned too. FFS!

No luck on appeals, so I guess no more reddit, ever again. Anyone managed to get around this?

I got permabanned for encouraging political violence: suggesting people draw pentagrams in chalk on a public street. As a joke, not like "show up at this time so we can do this."

They are eroding the definition of "political violence" and they know it, they don't care. Thought is political violence now.

[-] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 weeks ago

Redefining political violence has been a tactic of authoritarianism for many decades. It starts with only ever pointing out one kind of political violence (ie, the right does violence, the left does violence in response, only the left's violence is covered). Then comes treating lesser violence from one side as a greater form of violence (ie, the right is using grenades, the left is using boxing gloves). Finally comes what you experienced, the elimination of freedom of expression on the grounds that speech leads to violence, even if what you're calling for is just a slightly weird form of propaganda to invoke thought rather than any kind of violence.

I say all this in the hopes that someone on a different part of the scale somewhere can recognize the signs early enough to do something

Reddit really needs a great alternative. Lets see how Lemmy does in this regard.

So glad I got the fuck out of there. I was almost banned for saying they should take out Desantis like the dirty diaper he is.

This was way back during Trump's first presidency. I appealed explaining that in the same series of comments way worse was said. The mod accused me of harassment for sending a single appeal. It left such a bad taste in my mouth I never really took the site seriously after that and moved on completely several months later.

It was a good thing though. Everything I had liked about Reddit had long been perverted, I just hadn't realized it.

[-] SportsLvr14@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

12 years for me. Tons of Karma, made it to top page once. I made a stupid joke on Roast me, and someone considered it Hate speech. Tried to create other profiles, all are permanently banned now. Appeals are denied. Glad I found this site. I hope it scratches the itch.

I still use my banned account. I can sub/unsub, save posts and RES still works in my browser. I just can't comment, message or report people. Given I was mostly a helpful user with people's little questions, it's really their loss.

[-] YesButActuallyMaybe@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

Fuck u/spez Enjoy your free time

[-] BannedVoice@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

Yup, banned after 17 years here for speaking out against ICE. Guess Reddit is just taking a turn right into the shitter now.

[-] MBech@feddit.dk 2 points 1 week ago

It's been doing that for quite a while now.

[-] U7826391786239@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

they ban your digital fingerprint, not just your ip. the only way to go back is make a new account on a different device/browser and never log into that new account from your old device

but do you really want to go back?

i also had multiple accounts (main acct was 14 yrs old) banned for hurting conservative fee fees. don't miss it one bit

[-] ShergalFarkey@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Yes and no, I guess, I don't know.. I used it every day for almost 20 yrs, It became part of my daily routine. I'm really liking it here though, it feels way less 'shouting into the void' and more inclusive, kinda like early reddit.

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

it feels way less ‘shouting into the void’

Very much so.

Two things killed Reddit for me.

  1. Bot bans for basically everything.

  2. Over-saturated to the point that your comments almost never get interacted with. So....what's the point?

happened to me on a couple accounts, eventually I just quit and came here

reddit's been fucking trash since the API fiasco anyways. I only stuck around to help a subreddit grow

[-] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Join the club, I was banned for making a comment about the fucking Muscovites attacking Ukraine. F-Reddit!

[-] dan69@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I got banned after 12 years for saying "kill" in the context of a cat hunting for food. I appealed it and immediately got a denial. They said the decision wasn't made by a bot which means a human just straight up didn't read the comment that got me banned.

As for getting around it, it takes more effort than it's worth. They use multiple levels to enforce their bans. Beyond just an IP ban, they can see what device you're on, pixel counts of your screen, browser cache, basically your whole digital fingerprint. It's actually pretty terrifying how much information about you a website can get.

Even if you manage to evade all the technical stuff, the site can track which subs you might subscribe to, your interaction patterns, how you "talk" in comments, they got a whole profile on you. Your best bet of getting around the ban is to get a new device and move to another state. Even then if you join  multiple niche subs that your old account was subbed to they'll figure you out.

If you do it right, and clear all your cookies and caches and other identifiers you can use an anti-tracking browser like GoLogin, but most of those are subscription based and you'll have to run through a VPN and make sure you don't log in on a normal browser on accident.

Using the reddit app on your phone is out of the equation entirely.

Lemmy is a much better alternative, but there aren't a lot of people here. Hopefully reddit continues forcing their users off their platform so the population here gets bigger.

[-] Bullerfar@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Me too, because I made a joke about "If he just hadn't missed" - a hate post about trump = perma bann for life. Fuck reddit, never been looking bad. Lemmy.world was actually a solid solution.

[-] deacon@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

This was the best thing that ever happened to you. Don’t look back.

[-] Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Why do you want to get around it? Reddit is last decade. Time to move on.

[-] Win012@lemmy.today 2 points 1 week ago

18 years. Banned a year ago. No recourse, appeal immediately denied. Used the word “tRump”

Welcome to Lemmy!

[-] Wilco@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

This happened to me. Best thing that could have happened. Welcome to Lemmy.

The flaws here are minor;

  1. Skip around the computer talk and try to avoid Linux discussions.
  2. Avoid/block anyone that uses the word "Zionist" ... they are weird and will just escalate into name calling.
  3. Dont ask what a "Tankie" is, try and avoid them (same as 2).
[-] TheObviousSolution@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

Your mistake wasn't making the comment, it was that it caught the eye of an admin's alt. It's why r/worldnews goes to shit anytime anything Israel related is ever mentioned, and it's such a sticking point for the admins that they basically had to throw away everything they had built up with the worldnews Q&A and interviews. They even used to pass off admin actions as that of the mods until eventually after getting enough backlash they just promoted the karmawhore mods willing to be loyal to them and forced the rest to leave.

They don't want users or subscribers anymore, they want a product. They don't give a shit how many years you were a member, and they secretly hope you do end up registering with an alt. It's basically a stick to implicitly train you to avoid those topics if you want to continue participating.

If you want to go back to reddit, your best bet is to run on a VM with a different yet standard resolution and to try to mask all the data your browser leaks about you (why there isn't a browser that already does this is ridiculous). Different timezone, location, etc. Tracking doesn't matter as long as you don't use it with your main account. Cycle your IP, which is usually simply turning off your ISP router for a while then turning it back on again, don't really need a VPN unless they want to start banning whole geographical locations. If everything works out, congratulations, you have become yet another organic user reddit has turned into being indistinguishable from fake bot users.

[-] boiledham@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Yeah happened to me. Got temp banned for trash talking, then went on an alt and then got perma'd. It is what it is but I spend much less time on there as a result. Win win?

[-] thlibos@thelemmy.club 1 points 2 weeks ago

Same happened to me, an 11 year user. I wasn't even evading a ban and I got permabanned:

After reviewing,...we found that you broke Rule 1 because you encouraged or glorified violence or physical harm. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for encouraging violence against people or animals. We don’t tolerate any behavior that encourages, glorifies, incites, or calls for violence or physical harm against an individual, groups of people, places, or animals. Any communities or people that encourage or incite violence towards an individual, group, animals, or place will be banned.

They then told me the content they banned me for was "scrubbed" and then they provided a link to said content which was, or course, blank. So, I couldn't even see what they banned me for. I asked them to provide the text I got banned for but they only gave a canned response. I then appealed. Practically instant denial. Fuck them. The entire ten+ years I was on reddit I saw incel, gamergate, MAGA chuds posting comments way more violent than anything I ever posted. They are still there, doing the same. I wish I could spend a few minutes in the presence of both the mod and the admin that silenced me like that.

There are ways around a ban, but it really isn't worth the trouble and you can still get banned even after that if you are not always careful. Do a web search..."they" practically walk you through the application you will need to get and how to set up everything so their fascist fingerprint algos can't connect you back to the banned accounts. Just making sure your browser, computer, and external, visible IP is different is nowhere near enough to avoid a (re)ban.

As someone else mentioned, I can still log in, read my old posts, browse, sub and unsub, but can't ever comment, message, or report anything. Strangely enough (and I think this is a mistake on their part) I can still up and down vote posts.

The only thing I really miss (and I despise Reddit because of it) is that I cannot post to ask questions or for help in my local city/state subreddits.

[-] the_armchair_potato@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Same happened to me. Fuck reddit back to the hell in which it came. Mods can't handle the truth there. Never going back!!

[-] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Every account I had got perma banned and wiped from Reddit because I was on a temp ban on one of my accounts. I was on one of my other accounts that was older than the one I was temp banned from. Apparently I commented in a sub I had literally zero regocnition I was banned from probably years earlier on the newer account, just showed up on my feed on the other account.

I now cannot even make an account for longer than a few hours before it's scrubbed. I don't have to join a sub, like a post, or make a comment. I'll just make an account, wait a few hours, and get a notification that it's been permabanned.

[-] marduk@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 2 weeks ago

Count your self lucky the local authorities haven't come to your door to question you about such a comment...

[-] dizzle18@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I will always love the fact that the comment that finally got me permabanned was for telling a MAGA knuckledragger that he wasn’t just licking boots, he was deep throating them. Meanwhile, r/conservative, an actual fucking Russian psyop operation, is allowed to continue to exist. Reddit in a nutshell, especially after Trump was reelected.

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

My 13 year old account with 250,000 comment karma was instant permabanned for saying "it's ok to punch a nazi".

That's when I stopped caring about Reddit and just kept creating new accounts to say whatever the fuck I wanted.

Reddit bans are serious stuff. You don't wanna get around it anyways, not that you could. They are doing you a favor, really. Now you can just anonymously scroll, like me!

I got a "permaban" about 3 years ago. Last month I was unbanned with no notification. Apparently you can just wait?

[-] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

yes. i have been permabanned and unbanned three times now.

all in the past 3 years. it's insane. I'm probably unbanned again already but I don't really care anymore. my bans were for the most innocuous comments take out of context and all from AI tools and angry losers who report you for disagreeing with them.

i used reddit for a decade with zero incidents, mostly on one account with a few throwaways. my opinions haven't changed really either, but now apparently I am a sexist and racist and violent person for pointing out that sexism, racism, and violence exist.

[-] tackleberry@thelemmy.club 1 points 1 week ago

Your first mistake was criticising Netanyahu. You do not criticise the supreme leader Your second mistake was using Reddit I think this ban has fixed the second one for you. Welcome to thelemmyclub 🤗
